Watched this recently for a college class, and at first I wasn't super impressed until my professor made an assignment from this speech. The goal is to introduce MYSELF which there are options but I'm still super lost because Ashton made this speech smooth and it just flows. Trying to figure out how to make this into my own speech (obviously not using his words).

"Opportunity looks like hard work". Ugh, thanks for the mansplaining. The hardest working people I witness didn't have the opportunity of their first job from their daddy. They live in rural areas with no public transportation, and small towns with no jobs, and the closest community college is 50 miles away. They live in urban areas where the best job around is a local McDonalds. He undervalues the role model of his parents, and the absence of a parent in other households. He undervalues the privileges handsome white males have over physically unattractive black females. Instead of lecturing the people need few, if any opportunities, why not talk about how lucky he was to have parents who fed and supported him, and kept the lights on? Why not be grateful for the first job his father gave him and showed him how to work? Why not be grateful to the people who gave him a lucrative career as a Calvin Klein model? Geez!

Never took a vacation in my 20s, worked 50-70 hrs a week, took every opportunity that came my way. Now I'm in my early 30s and take off whenever I want to have everything I ever dreamed of (not much but its all I want) and enjoy life knowing I don't have to do this I'm not handcuffed to this job since I handcuffed myself to this one in my 20s.

Ha. I can't believe this video is on KZread. This was the first concert I ever went to. I went with my older brother who got me into the scene. I only knew Dead Poetic but my brother showed me Shop 11's EP on the way there (he couldn't show me at home cause they weren't a christian band lol) and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The show was insane. I can still remember what it felt like to be in the room. I left that concert a changed man, at the ripe age of 12. This show launched me into the scene so hard. Had to have gone to 100's of shows after that all the way until I left for College. Some of the greatest memories of my life.

If you believe what he said you are quite retarded. If you think working tables and other odd jobs will get you anywhere by whatever magical way, you are very gulible. There's a reason why he didn't tell very specifically how he actually made it in Hollywood. You're silly if you think there aren't powerful people out there who are betting against you before you were even born and think they're just idiots and you can become CEO or president just by working hard...

- Unpopular opinion - That's nice and all but coming from a privileged person (white hetero male, sorry I'm saying it), its easy to say opportunities depend on your own work, that you don't need to be sexy (but he is) and that you should build your own independent life; but how is his life really outside of the box? Epic speech, no doubt. Epic crowd reaction, not so much. As Mr. Kutcher voiced this life wisdom, the crowd didn’t care to hear it. No raucous applause. No standing ovation. The crowd of mostly teens, surely mesmerized by Ashton’s hyper-personality, sandwiched his “hard work” speech with crickets. Chirp chirp. Of course being sexy and cool was met with screams and catcalls. Clearly our youngsters are more interested in “big breaks” and “overnight success” than they are about sweeping floors and washing dishes - MJ Demarco
