    I am brand new to learning Irish. I’ve spent two weeks on Duolingo and have learned over 180 words and phrases so far, but I’m really a beginner, and this seemed to cover nuances and subtleties that an intermediate student would need to know, but I’m still trying to find out how to pronounce Dia duit! (I’ve heard it several different ways), and why is there an “h” in some versions of a word but not in others? (Ghaeilge/Gaeilge? Bhean/Bean?) I haven’t learned the days of the week or the numbers yet. I will check out your other videos, but what I need are slow and clear explanations of pronouncing basic words and spelling patterns (by a human rather than a computer). I teach French as a second language and English as a first language, and I have also studied Italian and Spanish (and language acquisition theory), so I have a good understanding of how to learn a language. I know my students would be overwhelmed if I tried to get the beginners to remember all the grammar rules and exceptions that exist in French. Thank you for this, though, I can see I have a long way to go.

That being said, surely the people in the gaeltachts also want to know all the interesting stuff going on in the world that is normally not covered in Irish-language news for some reason.

    Thanks Liam. It's good to talk about how to practice the language. I am 71 years old and I did get my leaving cert. but I have lost a lot of the Gaeilge over the years. I do think classical teaching, as I have known it did not help when developing 'speaking' other languages. I am Irish, an English writer, living in the Netherlands and I am picking up my Gaeilge again, thanks to you.

    In Munster we have more contracted forms for an modh coinníollach - rithfeadh muid = rithfimis, rithfeadh siad = rithfidís. But it's probably easier for learners to just remember rithfeadh.

    The whole "dé/ar an" thing is mostly because people don't know that "dé" is the dative of "dia" and that it takes the genitive form of the day name. There isn't really a "second system" here like there is with numbers. Mind you, putting that in a beginner friendly way isn't easy, and it doesn't help that déardaoin is such an oddball or that the dative case is mostly in its death throes.

  • @talideon

    Now, the bit about numbers with plurals isn't exactly correct. If I were to say "trí shicín", I'm talking about three chickens as a group, but if I say "trí sicíní", I'm taking about three individual chickens. You can use plural, but there's a semantic difference there.

    this is really helpful, the fact that you are breaking down the grammar rules BUT also that I am hearing you pronounce it and I can see the spelling... There are several videos as Gaeilge on YT but many don't have proper subtitles...or they are speaking way too fast...and then conversely, some books I have don't have cds etc so I have NO idea how to pronounce them, and teanglann is honestly a tad confusing for me lol. ...so it is nice to see it slowly done. Around 05:00 the discussion about 'ceist mhaith & ceist t(h)ábhactach'. I don't hear the séimhiú on 'tábhachtach' but I think it could be there and the final -t of 'ceist' is making it seem like there is no séimhiú on 'tábhachtach'. But the discussion of what's going on focuses only on maith -> mhaith and the absence of pointing out that anything is going on with the 'ceist t(h)ábhachtach' then makes me a bit suspicious again. If the point is to explain the effect of when to use a shéimhiú then I'd think the explanation should point out it's going on with both adjectives. But it could be happening (and is hidden by word-final 't' of 'ceist') but given it's not referred to, just really confused me. What's actually going on here? Hoping to become Patreon supporter soon!

  • @LearnIrishOnline
    @LearnIrishOnline8 ай бұрын

    Hi Alex, hope all's well! Good point. As you hint at, it's virtually impossible to distinguish 'ceist tábhachtach' from 'ceist thábhachtach' when there's no major gap between the two words, but in written form it should be 'thábhachtach', following the same rules as 'maith' to 'mhaith'. Sorry if I didn't point this out, I probably didn't stop to think about it myself, as when listening to it you can't even hear the 'h' Looking forward to seeing you soon on Patreon! Plenty of content for you there to get stuck into.

    I wanted to watch this for review and was happy to learn about 'an dá' and the 'an t-aonú is fiche' quirks. One thing that also threw me a bit, but wasn't really clarified, was in the example test for "the sixth person", I put "an séu dhuine" because of the 2-6/7-10 rule (also helpful to have it named as such, for me). But it seems that only applies to cardinal numbers and not ordinal. Could be good to remember that it's probably a trap new students would fall into, because we're not told (in any book I've seen, but it's probably hiding in the details somewhere) about no mutations on following nouns with ordinal numbers. GRMMMMA!

  • @thetopofthelist
    @thetopofthelist9 ай бұрын

    Haigh Alex. Go raibh míle maith agat as an tacaíocht mar is gnách! That's a very good point Alex, and yep, it is something I maybe should have clarified. The 2-6/7-10 rule applies essentially when the English sentence has a number on the noun (e.g. six people, six dogs, six books), in other words, when you're telling me how many of something there is. However 'sixth' isn't really a number (yes, I do realise I called them the ordinal numbers, maybe adding to confusion haha). If you say 'the sixth person' I still don't know how many people there are, compared to 'six people', where I know there are six people present. So rules such as 2-6 won't apply to 'an séú ' Hope that makes sense 😊 GRMMA!
