Erratically sharing my digital room correction expertise and experiences here.
The hobby is to chase better sound and I also do some listening during the chase.

You will learn many tips and tricks for the Room EQ Wizard aka REW, rePhase, Audyssey as well as state of the art techniques for both stereo and surround systems correction and equalization including Dolby Atmos. I use a Marantz SR6015 in my home theater system and use Roon for stereo music listening. Most Audyssey and multichannel techniques can be applied to all Denon & Marantz models. Manual calibration techniques can be applied to most surround receivers including Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, and Sony.

    Been a subscriber for a long time and was one of the first to be amazed by Evo1 a few months back. Like others, I eagerly tried new releases, though honestly kept going back to one of the first (v1.3) releases because the bass had seemed less punchy in HT thereafter. Came back this week to find so much further progress and decided to try MJ! I've used the same .ady as before, but was surprised when my first run told me to use the Fronts Full-Range, but switch to LFE+Main for bass output and LPF of 120Hz. I've seen others ask about this and the response was just try it. I also re-optimized with LPF capped and got the same thing but told to use LPF 250Hz. I tried with fixing Fronts to small and that optimized at a XO of 90Hz (much higher than the 40Hz I used to use) but wanted me to invert my subs (never saw that before). Lastly I switched from the default MJ curve to the Harmon curve with no fixed settings (nothing checked) and Evo1 automatically used small fronts, a 90Hz XO and no sub inversion rather than Large fronts with LFE+Main setting it first suggested. I've tested a few of these options and they all sound good, but what sounds best really depends on what I'm listening to and when i listen, so I'm a bit lost now on choosing. Thought to ask a couple questions, especially as others might be interested too. 1) performance wise, are there expected advantages to having Fronts as Large full-range if you are still cutting the bass of Mains off at an LPF of 120Hz? Vs. just doing Small and the associated XO? What might I want to listen for to compare? 2) does it make sense that just switching target curves results in a very different output configuration? Is the MJ curve optimized in some way to allow the Evo1 script to work a certain way? Many thanks again for all your effort!

  • @ocaudiophile

    120Hz LPF setting is a filter on the subwoofer, fronts work full range in LFE + Main. Newer models have a separate setting in their menu for that (bass extraction lpf), with older models, you adjust it from front speaker crossover setting. I agree it's confusing. I recommend LFE + Main / Large fronts setting for the best bass unless you have a weaker receiver or your fronts are not floorstanders. Target curves are a matter of taste and your sub's natural response shape really. MJ curve is just an average for the very high number of speaker responses I have seen over the months.

    First connect one of the AVR sub outputs to MiniDSP2x4HD (IN1 or IN2), Set the GAIN on each sub to 12 o'clock, GAIN match each sub by putting your Microphone the same distance from the center of each sub, use REW to generate a signal and MiniDSP2x4HD to raise or lower the GAIN. To determine the best location for each of the subs place a sub at the MLP and using REW generate a signal and move the microphone around the room. That's how I did it.

    The "uber" thanks much appreciated! Plug all 4 subs in minidsp which Audyssey sees as SW1 connected to preout sub1. Sir, when compensating for XO/port/box, is the goal to find the best filter for your speaker parameters? Or is it to make the excess phase as close to 0 as possible? I have 3,5 way ported design. I get much flatter excess phase when correcting only for my 2 XO points (2500 and 250) and not correcting neither 3rd XO (80Hz) nor port (which I guess is around 30-36Hz, I tried them all, using box correction as well as 1st order all pass filters). Thank you for everything <3

  • @ocaudiophile
    @ocaudiophile2 күн бұрын

    All will improve the sound but I would list all xo frequencies and port frequency twice under min. phase all pass filters and play with 1st and 2nd order normal and compensate mode combinations which yield the flatest ep response. Use only 0.707 Q for 2nd order. If you really need to, you can double that to 1.414. Finding a solution using only these Q values guarantees correctness of the filter.

  • @vorpane
    @vorpane2 күн бұрын

    Thank you. And does it make sense to aim for flatness based on averaged LR EP if in the bass region (say, 30-60hz) left speaker exhibit vast difference from the right one in terms of EP (and even MP, in symmetrical room/setup!)? Am I not better off correcting xo/port/box for each speaker separately? (Or, instead I can tackle bass in "aligning speaker phases with each other" step…)

    This looks very interesting, though I'm not sure where starting right now. I've just bought a Denon 3800H, but yet to be plugged in. To go with a 5.1 setup (2 front Focal Chorus 816v, 1 centre, 2 at rear 806vs instead of side as dont have room on the side), with a BK monolith sub. I seem to remember on my old (now broken) Onkyo 607 receiver that I had to set something between Small and Large, and/or 6/8ohms but I cant now remember what it was as it was approx 10 years since set that up. From what I gather, I need to 1) obviously get this plugged in and a basic out of box setup (will have to see if I can find any old notes on the small/large etc options). 2) Do a basic Audyssey calibration from out of the box within the menus, 3) buy the Play Store app for the £20, run this to get a copy of my current config, 4)download the files to pc and run your great looking app, 5)sync these modifications back to the AVR

    Hi OCA! Thanks for all your fantastic work and support. I have a question that I'm hoping you can help me with. I'm used to always matching the speaker levels after calibration using the SACT disk. However, when I do this now after using EVO, regardless of the version, I get very large differences in levels. For example: 75dB After EVO MJ After level matching FL -1.5 -1.5 C -3 1 FR -3.5 0.5 SL -2.5 4.5 SR -3 5 FHR 1 8 FHL -2.5 7 TMR -2 6 TML -1 6.5 RHR 1 7.5 RHL 1.5 8 I kept my FL speaker as the reference point and adjusted all the other speaker levels to match. Do you have any idea why these differences are so large? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks again for all your help!

    Keep Evo set volume levels, they are exceptionally accurate. If you are using receiver's test tones for your evaluation, they completely bypass all filtering and are uselss. If you're using some sort of pink/white noise, they are band limited.

  • @roydeleeuw5671
    @roydeleeuw56715 күн бұрын

    @@ocaudiophile Thank you for your quick response. I'm not using the test tones from my receiver, but rather the Spatial Audio Calibration Toolkit, combined with a UMIK-1 and REW to measure the levels. Should I still just leave the levels as they are? The Atmos levels, in particular, are much lower than the other five.

  • @ocaudiophile
    @ocaudiophile5 күн бұрын

    Download and play the Atmos test tracks from the link below. They will give you a real indication of accuracy of the speaker levels. They are playable from a USB key by most Bluray players. If you are not happy with the results, try running Evo with "force 1st mic position" option. In the case that your calibration file has some faulty measurements, this will bypass them. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1-UndPKtH-Ld0UlQEYjLuld3rz0gS5CYc?usp=sharing

    Hello sir, I'm most impressed and grateful for the content you're sharing. I've some questions (disclaimer: I'm a rookie so I may be very wrong). My priority is to flatten the low bass, because I have insane drop in 34-57 Hz range. 1. If I was to leverage all your latest methods for a 2.0 system with Roon (no audyssey), I suppose that would be combination of VBA + xover/box/port correction + the inversion below Schroeder. Is that right? 2. In what order should these filters be created and applied? My guess: 1) create VBA filter based on original measurement, 2) create xover/port filter based on VBA-applied trace, 3) create "inverted below Schroeder" filter based on xover/port-applied trace, 4) convolve inverted filter * xover/port filter, 5) convolve result of "4)" * vba filter 3. What REW measurement and analysis settings should be used for creation of each of these 3 filters? You specified one here kzread.info/dash/bejne/dZyE15KuY9HAqMY.html (with mic pointing at speakers and minimum phase cal file) and another one here kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKF906yYms_AgNo.html . I'm guessing the same measurement needs to be used for creation of all 3 filters, right? So which one? 4. What's the optimal measurement length for these corrections? Will 1M be good enough? 5. Does it make sense to aim for nearly flat (at zero degrees) result of maximum phase when correcting fox xover/box? Let's assume such correction won't ring or anything. Because I can make it much flatter compared to what you've shown, and even with quite small Q values. Or are the corrections you've shown sufficient? Should we only care about 100-1000 Hz range when "flattening" the max phase response (as it's the range that's audible phase-wise)? 6. I have quite pronounced phase differences between left and right speaker in my listening position. Should I rather them separately (rather than based on LR averaged)? Because my LR average would have quite high std. Deviation, so I would be correcting against a max phase trace which isn't very applicable to neither left nor right speaker.

  • @ocaudiophile
    @ocaudiophile7 күн бұрын

    Thanks for the gesture. 1M length is good enough, the louder and the longer the better but rew will slow down and inversions etc will be extremely large beyond that. VBA, phase correction, inversion order seems right, don't forget to generate minimum phase of the final vba and inversion filters. 100-1000hz is good for phase but remember to correct only excess phase. If certain correction causes pre echo, try to just fix what's different in excess phase of left and right speaker.

    HI OCA! I am trying to match phase and time with a single channel measurement system such as USB microphone UMIK-2. Someone says UMIK-2 is not recommended for this alignment due to timing and phase variations and normalizations. REW should not be used without electrical loopback as timing reference or cal and timing reference for acoustical measurements to avoid timing manipulation by the program. how to ride it? thank you very much
