There are so many wonderful melodies in this short nine minutes. 1:06 - Shall we/they submit has the trappings of grandeur as a prelude to some tragedy 5:31 - The way that the sopranos and the sailors voices interlace is mesmerizing 7:11 - The emphasis on the "la"s is a masterful choral piece 7:35 - The ladies singing somehow reminds me of Aaron Copland and evokes images of the American Wild West

Ralph, Boatswain & Carpenter. A British tar is a soaring soul, As free as a mountain bird, His energetic fist should be ready to resist A dictatorial word. His nose should pant and his lip should curl, His cheeks should flame and his brow should furl, His bosom should heave and his heart should glow, And his fist be ever ready for a knock-down blow. His nose should pant and his lip should curl, His cheeks should flame and his brow should furl, His bosom should heave and his heart should glow, And his fist be ever ready for a knock-down blow. Ralph, Boatswain & Carpenter. His eyes should flash with an inborn fire, His brow with scorn be wrung; He never should bow down to a domineering frown, Or the tang of a tyrant tongue. His foot should stamp, and his throat should growl, His hair should twirl, and his face should scowl; His eyes should flash, and his breast protrude, And this should be his customary attitude. His foot should stamp, and his throat should growl, His hair should twirl, and his face should scowl; His eyes should flash, and his breast protrude, And this should be his customary attitude, His attitude His attitude His attitude. I'm auditioning for H.M.S. Pinafore for my college next weekend and this might be my last semester, so I'm hoping for a part. A lead would be nice, so I'm going to try this song. I'm not sure I can reach a high C, but I'm damn sure gonna try.

A little bit of movie trivia, in Zulu (1964), Pvt. Owen the Welsh baritone was humming A British Tar in his first scene. HMS Pinafore was released in 1878, the year before Rorke's Drift, so a good choice.

Is it me, or did Uzeyir Hajibeyov totally steal that opening oboe phrase when he composed the national anthem of Azerbaijan? And yes, I checked - the March of Azerbaijan was published in 1920, 42 years after _Pinafore_ premiered. Not to mention, Hajibeyov wasn't even born yet when this play premiered.

Great timing on the video upload. I bowl maybe once every few years to do something different. I live in CT and now I have some free morning before work. I decided I wanted to buy my own bowling ball and start bowling. When into the Pro shop and talked to a guy named John and he gave me some advice and ordered a ball for me. Looking at the bowling alleys Facebook page I noticed John won a lot of their house tournaments and his full name was "John Kirker". I googled his name and it brought me to this video of him bowling. Neat to see the much younger version in a PBA match.
