    There is no ‘the ghost of Glastonbury’. Glastonbury has a number of known ghosts in various parts of the town, but I have to say I have never heard of this particular one. My family have lived here for many generations so are reasonably aware of the locations where ghosts have been detected.

    I remember it like that. I was a taxi driver at the end of the 1960's and early 1970 when I married and moved to London. I was proud I knew every road, alleyway, pub etc. but when I made a fleeting visit a few years back, I was totally lost!

    Using Google 3D streetview I've worked out that the photo which is used quite a lot in this video (e.g. at 0:34) shows the bombed building which stood before Beales was built. Slightly to the right is Lloyds Bank on Old Christchurch Road and the white building near it (opposite corner) is RBS. The flat roofed building in front of shot is the bar "The Mary Shelley" and the photo was probably taken from the back of the graveyard or St Peter's Church itself. The church in the distance is St. Michaels Church at the top of Poole Hill.

    Thanks everyone for commenting on my Poole 1963 film. The music is a licenced production track by Mark Hewer featuring Mike Burn on guitar. For those visitors who want to examine the scenery at a more leisurely pace, can I suggest the freeze frame button - that way, you can see everything very clearly at whatever zoom level you want.

  • @Michael-eg3rs

    they did at one point older ones but the wood caused ashes that came out of the smoke stack that also could cause fires, that's why they were using coal after that

    Troll Hitler a good number of preserved locomotives in the united states that run today burn oil which is cleaner than coal. some were originally built to run on oil, some converted to when being restored. right now one of the largest engines in the world is being restored and will run on oil. if you're interested to take a look, just Google "Union Pacific 4014" or "Big Boy 4014." easily over twice as large as the engines shown in this video but may turn out to be cleaner.

    Actually, a lot of the houses you can see were redeveloped under the slum clearance programme. I lived here in West Street as a very young child and the houses were in a foul state. We were rehoused into a post war "quickbuild". But if BDH Chemicals (as it was know then) hadn't come along with investment who knows? There was a planning restriction for decades afterwards that meant the tallest building allowed was Barclays Bank on The George roundabout The last twenty years has seen far worse damage by the powers that be and their "millionaires" playground vision.

  • @GEOFF0906
    @GEOFF09067 жыл бұрын

    Most of the houses shown here actually survived the initial 'slum clearance', and in fact the areas of Hunger Hill and Nile Row were demolished to make way for the Towngate Bridge Flyover in around 1969.
