David, thank you for another very practical video. I am envious of your short, powerful backswing. I'd appreciate any tips on how to shorten the backswing while keeping club speed. I have a constant battle with arm overrun.
Thanks David, nice easy explanation of the the pre shot routine. Saw an interesting one in the Scottish open with one of the Europeans doing a strange move to give his body a feeling of clearing his left side. Was strange, but worked for him. I watched the 2007 England France rugby world cup semi final on a big screen under the Eiffel Tower and Wilkinson did it again. Field goal to win by a point. Thanks for the instruction, really enjoying it.
Would you teach a lesson on wrist hinge please !!! Thank you
I’m really impressed you knock an 8 iron 150 yds with almost a half swing 👌🙂
I agree, pre-shot routine is probably more important than the actual shot. As a new golfer, it's something that I started doing right away to build the habit early.
Love the series but most 18 hcap like myself are often trying to par the hole not play for safe bogey and will string 2, 3 4 or 5 good shots before a bad one arrives to undo the good work.
Great lesson in managing your expectations!
Great videos
No bunkers around the greens? Especially on the par3?
A couple on the par3, you can see it behind me when I’m putting
I like the idea of visualising water on the green and where it would pool to help reading 👍 good video.
Will be doing a complete green reading video in the next couple of weeks👍
There can be a lot of reasons why a person may not be able to accomplish this, not the least of which relates to some mechanical swing issue. Continued attempts won't magically fix that. So, at what point do you look for professional help to get a more consistent swing, etc.?
I'm playing better than ever because of your videos. I never was a good manager of the game but I have improved so much because of you. Just advancing the ball, playing within my skills, and managing the course have helped me so much. Thank you.
Brilliant, keep using the ideas
Good video on how to drop the ego too and play with in your true means. Only issue I see is that a lot of golfers even those who score around 90-95 will chunk a number of shots and get in real trouble or the lie is in deep rough or any other real nasty situation that makes them frustrated if that happens a number of times. Now their trying to do those small % shots. But your advice is what most should do if they can drop the eog. I know golfer who think "If I can only find the right clubs that work for me and my swing" Instead of practicing a few times/wk to get better contact. A buddy of mine must have 50 clubs at home hoping some of them are the answer to his contact issues. 😃
Very very sensible advice. I would say though, that this course does not seem to have many hazards. No rough or bunkers in sight. If I missed the fairway as he did on the par 5 I would be up to my shins in rough searching for it!
The course has water on holes 3 and 6, and every hole is on quite a severe slope which is its main defense. The holes I used (7,8 and 9)are on the slopes, and bunkers around the par 3, a decent challenge
Thanks for the lesson on how to better think about the game. btw, what putter do you use? From a distance it looks like a Mizuno M Craft lll.
Odyssey Metal X Milled 9HT
Great demonstration that experts don't play swashbuckling golf. Even Phil Mickleson didn't gamble all that much. He played the odds. He'd just developed such incredible touch with his short game over many years of daily practice that he had very tight tolerances on his shots, especially his short game shots. So the average TV or gallery viewer thinks he's playing chancy, gambling golf, going for really tight pin placements and such. But he's not. He's playing the percentages. It's just that his are very very tight, at least on the days that he's on and playing well. On the days he isn't, we don't see him on TV. :) Scratch golfers aren't championship level touring pros. They are trying to shoot level par, and given that their scratch handicap index is the average of their best 40% of their scores, they probably don't quite shoot level par on average. So they are going for mostly pars, with the occasional birdie to offset the occasional bogey, and trying to avoid blowup holes altogether. It's kind of like those of us trying to shoot 90 or better by stringing together lots of bogeys, with just a few pars offsetting the occasional double, and trying to avoid the really big numbers that plague us. Same principle. Just a higher level of skill for the scratch golfer.
love this guy, he's a stat driven coach. facts speak for themselves. Wanna shoot par? NO penalty strokes...NO bad decisions...No mishits...NO 3 putts.. and the one completely out of your control: NO BAD BREAKS. If stats were kept on just those, it would surprise even the pros. All these together are why I'm a 20 HC.
Correct
Excellent demonstration of playing within yourself.. most of us want to play our best shots every time, end up playing our worst, and bearing the consequences of that, compounds the errors! If you start by just getting your tee shot on the fairway, you're already in good shape for the hole, and vice versa!
Wow. Eureka 💡 the best !!!! Explanation!! EVER. This type of coaching resonates with me. Thank you for sharing Doctor 😊
Appreciate your comments, thank you
I'd bump and run with a 5 wood
Thanks David, very clear. Manuel De La Torre always said "My target is not up there, it's down here at ground level. I just need to hit to the target with the requied shot". This is one of the best explainations of chipping I've seen. And works with so many clubs depending on distance and obstacles.
playing boogie golf runs in increased risk for double B ? . I will trying it. Laying up a bit more with straighter shots.
Great channel and excellent instructor. No nonsense. No golf jargon. Just plain old common-sense, back-to-basics golf. Love it!
You played three relatively straight holes. On my home course there are a few holes that really eat me up! One is a double dog leg. Tee shot: trouble left and right but you need some distance to get in good position for second shot. Also, if you hit it better than average, you have a downhill sidehill lie for second. Second shot you need some distance also if you want to have a chance to clear the creek in front of the green. Sometimes you have to lay up if you have anything much more than 150 yards. Trouble left, right, and short. The easy-peasy style you're showing may not get you where you need to be. Par 5. My typical score is 7-8. Sometimes worse. Hardly a level lie for the entirety of the hole. So, although I like your approach, it won't work for every hole.
The 3 holes have their different challenges, which the camera may not show. The Par 5 is a double dogleg, first it gradually moves right to left, and then a right angle dogleg to the right. The second shot is a downhill hanging lie with the ball above your feet. The Par 3 is a straight 200 yarder The Par 4 has a 5-6 degree slope from left to right, which is why the ball rolled into the edge of the trees. The great thing with golf is every hole has its own challenges, which is why I love this game.
@@TheResourcefulCoach I guess the camera makes it look a lot tamer than it is. I have noticed this phenomenon in my ski photos. Sorry, I jumped to a wrong conclusion, there.
I’m so glad I found your channel. I was used to shooting 80-84 on a regular basis. But lately it’s in the. 90’s
Are you saying his video is a help to you, or it's now got you hitting 90?
This a great channel, I love watching someone nearer my age teaching me things that I can do at 71! Thank you
Makes so much sense, thank you David.
Best golf instruction on the tube. Thank you.
Thank you for your comments
I like this
Amazing advice
love this video.. it makes golf looks like a relaxing game, not a rush and stressful one
I started playing golf in late April and now it is early July. I appreciate your videos but I have a question. How do you hit the ball in the first place so I can start getting those 90's instead of 140's?
I've watched a ton of golf videos. This is the first to explain how the chosen club is supposed to work.
A twofer, course management lesson, and how to play as an 18 handicap golfer. Excellent video. Oh, and I liked how you read the greens.
If you're an 18 learn how to punch from under trees to advance the ball and chip over bunkers to save par...
Finally, a good example of how to think your way around a hole. Started golf later in life, I’m 71 now and this is exactly what I need to see. Thank you!
This style of play leaves no room for errors. My problem is fat/thins and shanks. So that adds a few more strokes and I end up shooting in The high 90s to low 100s. If you are a consistent ball striker this is a great way to play.
Watch my video ‘Improve Your Ball Striking - Practice off a Downhill Lie’ , this will help to reduce your fat and thin shots.
So true, one duff in their and its a double or triple bogey
Excellent video. I've returned to golf at age 53 after trying golf in my early 20s. This is how you do it folks. Bogey golf is my goal every time out.
Good to watch but most of us duff a shot here and there that’s causing our game to gain shots that’s hard to work out 😊
Duffs and total miss hits are the culprit in my game as well. Totally agree
Yes, but we're also capable of parring six holes this way too. Still can break 90 with a couple of bad holes. He's teaching us to play with the shots we're confident we can play.
Great Coaching
Really enjoying the content and your delivery. Looking forward to your next upload Thank you.
Really enjoy your videos sir, you have a very calm style of teaching. I have a request, would you consider making a video on the differences between long irons, fairway woods, and hybrids and the advantages/disadvantages of the one over the other. Your insight on teeing of with a 1 iron would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all your wonderful advice.
You left out the shot where I skull fuck the ball over the green and also the one where I hit 15 inches behind the ball and carve a landing strip out that goes further than the ball.
Excellent videos, thank you
Here's the problem: you're hitting every shot how you want to. Anyone can make a bogey and an occassional par doing that - the issue with most 18 handicapers is they flub shots that cost them strokes at least every few holes. I'm a 12 and play with lots of 18s and if we didn't have bad shots/penalty shots we'd all be several strokes better.
Totally agree. A bogey golfer has to be able to hit 2-3 decent shots IN A Row.
Of course it helps if you’re playing a course with what looks like 150 yard wide totally flat fairway with no bunkers on it or few around the green.
Pretty easy for a 2 or 3 handicapper to club down to hit the ball like a 20 handicapper. But 18-20 'cappers don't hit 10 good shots in a row ( i can vouch for that..) One fat shot that goes 20 yds on the par five , plus one skulled chip and your bogey turns into snow-guy...
When you expect to bogey a hole, you will bogey a hole. Generally hit the club that will carry you to the back of the green. A miss hit will probably get you on the green. One thing that has really helped with chipping is to put most of my weight on the front foot. Stand close to the ball with the toe of the club on the ground. Start with the next to the most lofted club and chip 10 balls to an open spot on a flat green. My average was 14 yards. My G club was 19. My pitching wedge was 25. 9 iron 32. 8 about 39. All with the same swing. Up hill a little shorter, down hill longer. On a faster green, it may be 16 and 22, so I adjust. The point is if the pin is 15 yards, 54 degree club for me. My up and down has really improved with the “ same swing” you just have to trust it. Practice it and you instantly know distance.
Thank you for putting things in to perspective.....
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed the video - thanks for watching!
why didn't you hit a fairway wood for the second shot on the par 5, then a wedge to the green?
The data I have developed shows you what you need to achieve to play to a certain level, this video is to shoot 90. I always encourage my golfers to hit their best possible shot, the video is designed to show what is really required. Keep your game and mind in balance with this level. Please watch my 12 shots of golf, shot maintainers to help develop your consistent level.
@@TheResourcefulCoach do you have a video explaining the data?
@@trevh1400 my videos titled 12 shots of golf, show you data for all shots ranging from putting through to your driving There are around 8/9 different videos
What a great easy looking swing you have..I feel like I am swinging for the fences with my irons and just can’t get that consistency!
So now I know I have to think on the golf course
👍
