It is good to run a diesel at W.O.T. sometimes. Ideally go to redline and back off 100 rpm and let it cruise for several miles or more 😅
Good morning, wondering where you have been. I agree but I have heard back off about 10%. One puff of smoke and you're on your way!
@AskCaptainChris Good morning 10% would be 220 RPMs about. So that should work. On a older Detroit I would probably just run it wide open, they seem to love it 😀
Back home in Tennessee, we say we're "blowing out the carbon". Well, that's what we tell the State Trooper anyway.

Good morning.
Promising rain today, I hope so I can get my gasoline powered mower out again!
@@AskCaptainChris rain here on and off too
Excellent video sir 🙏🏽
I need to Ask Captain Chris. How many hour are to many hours on Caterpillar engines. I know a vessel with 1100 - 1200 hours is approaching life on a gas engine. How about diesels?
Depends a lot on the type and use of a boat, actually ABUSE. Diesels are expected to have well over 5,000 hours, some as much as 10,000 hours. BUT abuse those in a sportfisherman boat that crashes through waves racing out and back the drive train shock on the engine will shorten their life cycle. Ask a mechanic for your particular engine and boat use.
the fly has nothing to do with it at all
Wouldnt that be considered to be an "oily discharge"?
@@timgreen4137 yes indeed. That’s why I didn’t run it but for just a second to test the float switch. Really gross
Oil floats. It can be skimmed off with paper towels

I call that "Silverton Tea".

That looks like a nightmare--how does that even happen?

Good morning. Got any videos on how to keep birds off a boat
I have tried many types of deterrents and now I use a osprey kite from Amazon. Works great and many people in my harbor are also using it with great success.
@@patdghop i have kumerans messy birds perching in the riggings
Very smooth
Terrible. Spring line is the first one on and last one off.
Do the radar contacts have AIS ?
It depends, not all do. Yes for commercial boats but no law for pleasure boats.
The lines spread all over the boat was the first mistake. The Captain did a pretty good job fighting the wind and current. With twin screws, could have been a touch smoother.
Good morning
Yes it is and we expect some irrigation from the skies this afternoon. That means cutting the grass tomorrow!
double hose clamps on raw water seacocks is not a requirement guys
@@astrosully9757 it’s good practice. And all the surveyors that I work with recommend it.
The captain did an excellent job bringing it in. But this video is an excellent example of a pet peeve of mine. The mate passed the bow line first, the line most requested of dock hands. But the dock hand made it to tight/short, resulting in less control for the captain and preventing the stern from being able to be brought in tight to the dock. How do you deal with this situation, captain Chris?
Easy, I ask my deckhand to stand midship and hand out the mid line NEVER the bow line first. Mid then stern and finally bow line. Look back at yesterday's docking with two dockhands.
Great job 👏, really nice Boat.
He made it look easy!
Nice video, thanks Captain Chris.
Dock like a Pro!
Good morning that was a big'un
Beautiful here in Vero Beach and Fort Pierce, FLA.
Nice parallel docking.
Easy to parallel park this big boy.
The deckhand should have had lines ready before they turned into the marina basin. The dock girls were okay, but they were obviously unprepared to compensate for the amateur on the sportfish's foredeck. And look at the exhaust smoke - that port engine either has clogged injectors, a blocked air filter or a failing turbo.
Eh,. Little sloppy but no loud scratching sounds
I'm surprised that went as smoothly as it did. Boat crew was totally unprepared. Dock hands did a great job.
He came in downwind, judging by the flags. I would have passed a stern line. Once that is secured the boat would lay right up to the dock. And next time don’t forget the fenders.
I believe the two dockhands saved the day, they were great!
AGREE. Your approach is correct. I would have instructed my deckhand to secure the Sternline first. Then all drama would cease.
No fenders??
Guess the deckhand needs better training.
No fenders out?
I guess the deckhand needed better coaching?
I see it all the time in Charleston, “professional “ delivery captains coming in for fuel , no lines, no fenders. Mad scramble for the dock staff
@@JJP72095 They get paid the BIG BUCKs
Who needs fenders when you don't touch the dock. :)
@@davidh7423 if only you could depend on that
Seems a bit windy 😊
May have been better weather when they cast off in the morning. They got the boat in and docked with the help of the marina staff!
I swear I could feel the wind.
@@charlesdavenport2543 Finally no one is complaining about the wind in the microphone! Thanks!
The girls were great. Good job
They were on tiop oof their game. Perfect action and coaching. Wish the deckhand on the boat was prepared better.
Erma was bad. Missed you guys for the most part.
All the last few years were "canes were west coast except one that crossed over to Daytona (and missed us in Vero Beach).
Dark makes a big difference.
Other than the movement to screen left it is difficult to determine what type or size boat that is?
Rule 14(d) gives down bound boats right of way in Great Lakes, western rivers or waters specified by the secretary. What is the Col Reg reference for up bound boats having stand on privileges?
There is no such rule for the salt waters of the gulf coast where we are.
Ok I didn’t think so but misinterpreted your video comments to imply otherwise. Must have misheard in the video.
No comment on the incorrect display of the stern white light when operating as a powerboat??? Or, was it a sailboat under sail?
There was a stern light. Appropriately displayed. But I think the masthead light (or as most refer as the Bow light) that is questionable. Frankly I couldn’t see the masthead light/bow light at all.
We have a few around here that have ornamental lights. They seem offended when I say I mistook them for tourist gambling boats.
@@charlesdavenport2543 that’s funny. Some people just LOOK for something to be offended by.
“Darkness changes everything”
@@johnm5714 makes us work a little harder to see.
funny this got recommended to me, I'm one week into my RFPNW class right now, we just started rules of the road
I assume RFPNW is British in nature. The US has rules for river systems where the water flows the same direction (most of the time) and does not have these rules in salt water navigation where the tidal flow changes direction. Hope this helps, C
Probably a good video to watch but you seriously need a better microphone to deal with wind noise
We deal with real world environment. Video what we see when we see it. If it was difficult for you to hear think about the new boat owner. Real World.
lol “it’s tied down” Ok let’s bet our lives on that.
Ah. Leaky gear box.
Yes, if buying this boat plan on removing the windlass for shop service.
Need to secure that port anchor.
Agree, that is a lesson for the new owners.

Good morning. With a bad radiator cap , the boiling point of the coolant gets lower .lots of over heating or running hot situations can be traced to the cap .
Thx for that fun fact this morning.
