They didn't "HAVE" to get lifejackets themselves because there was "NO NEED" to abandon ship. The boat was not taking on water and still had propulsion. They simply panicked while the crew was busy handling the emergency. With that said, it appears the Captain is incompetent. The fact that the company sent two captains to the scene by boat shows how much faith they had in his abilities to handle the emergency.

The distribution of life jackets in this situation is Standard Operating Procedure, and it is the crew's responsibility. Colliding with the jetty established the "NEED", as it was referred. Panic didn't appear to be a big issue, although the videos I've seen suggest confusion and a lack of training, knowledge and experience among the crew was an issue. Everyone is safe and that's most important. Although I'm sure this will be a topic of discussion at the next PVA conference! (Passenger Vessel Association)

Captain sounded a bit 'under the weather'. It was called in over radio as south side of WI lighthouse, when it was north side of MN lighthouse...hmmm.

As a professional mariner, this sounds more like a young captain who made a bad decision to go out and then ended up in a situation that he was not equipped to deal with.

An experienced Captain would not. The CG or other agency might have boarded the Vista Star with medical personnel, but she would have been making way for protected water.

Other videos contain numerous radio communications from the Vista Star, The United States Coast Guard, the Sheriff’s Department, et al. On that side of the incident emergency procedures were in play. I cannot speak as to the effectiveness of the crew handling the passengers.

As a resident i cant tell you how much of a nuisance those things are to traffic. Drives crazy slow and cautious which inhibits proper flow of traffic.

Only speedsters, aggressive drivers, and road ragers would be annoyed by something that is "slow" and cautious. Just because something in front of you is not moving as fast as you want (even when it is going the legal speed limit) does not make it slow.
