Not the best jazz drummer of all time. That’s Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, Roy Haynes, Tony Williams, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Philly Joe, Danny gottlieb or Steve Gadd depending on whichever you just listened to last. Not the best rock drummer. That’s Bonham, Mitchell, Moon, Peart, Keltner, Watts or Copeland whichever you heard last. But he IS the BEST groove drummer of all time. Only Clyde Stubblefield gets close and I consider him more funk. And he crosses way over into rock. Best part of the late era Stones are the extended jams where Jordan sets a groove and Mick, Keef and Ronnie do their shaman thing and go into a trance state.

Have you received Jesus Christ as Lord and personal savior in your life? If you haven't received it yet, accept him now in your life as a personal and savior, pray this prayer for the Lord that comes from your heart. " Father I thank You that You love me so much, no matter what my past has been You have a future for me that is bright. I thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus and I desire to experience all that He gave His life for me to have. I choose now to turn from my own way, and I ask you to cleanse me of all unrighteousness. I believe that Jesus died on the cross to take my sin and rose from the dead that I may be forgiven. I declare that right now I am Your child and I am free to be who You created me to be and write my name in the book of life.In Jesus name I pray. Amen."

At a point in Steve's career he decided to abandon the wide vocabulary of rhythmic invention that involves drums other than the snare and kick, along with sophisticated polyrhythms, shifting time signatures and complex phrasing...all of which he did excellently, like no other and to high acclaim. After that point he decided to play pretty much nothing but groove, be it slow or fast, quiet or loud, but groove none the less. He's certainly a master at whatever he does and takes it to depths beyond most other drummers. However, I find it difficult to understand and appreciate the change in direction. To each his own and every artist has to follow their own path. For some of the best Steve Jordan, before he went "groove only", you must check out Steve Khan's 3 Eyewitness band albums: 1st: "Eyewitness",, 2nd: "Blades" and 3rd: "Casa Loco". If you haven't heard those...you haven't really heard Steve Jordan...you'll understand.
