I've visited to Canterbury Cathedral and stood next to this effigy. Even as an American, who doesn't know the history or traditions of the House Plantagenet, i felt as though I was indeed in the presence of this warrior prince. It's incredible to see in real life and i encourage anyone to go and become a pilgrim to the cathedral.

Why was it allowed to get into this state? If they restore it, it won’t be original

so is this a hat? on someone's head? did anyone actually wear it, if it is? it looks odd and difficult to wear so maybe not.. purely ornamental? made after the prince's death? wonder when that was? ..seems like an important person..

it was made for his funeral. If you search up 'black prince funeral achievements' you will see it is the cap that sat on top of his battle great helm. the lion is a symbol of english kings and I assume it would have identified him in battle, not that he would have necessarily worn it in battle. I assume that the helmet is still underneath but is wrapped in that white sheet for protection.

@@davidevans3227 I am no expert but I was very into medieval history and making medevial artifacts in my youth. I also grew up in Canterbury so must have visited his tomb more than one hundred times. Was just incredible to look up and see real artifacts made in the 14C. the copies were also fantastic, made by the royal armouries in the 60s or 70s I believe.

The iron railings are medieval so it wasn't possible to dismantle them. You're right, it would have certainly allowed closer access for study!

Please continue making these “insider” videos with details we’d otherwise never know or appreciate. It is also wonderful to hear the names and details of the craftsmen and lesser known people connected to these beautiful artifacts. Thanks very much!
