I would call red, yellow, and blue the "psychological" primaries (or maybe just "my" psychological primaries since I can't know if other people's minds "see" color the same way my mind does). These are the colors that to my own mind don't "feel" like mixtures (plus black and white). Every other color I can imagine in my mind "feels like" some mixture of one or more of black, white, red, yellow, and blue (at least to my mind). But of course, the psychology of color tells you nothing of the physics. What we now know is that visible light is a whole continuum of different frequencies, not just three or four or five, or even a hundred. It's infinite. So technically no number of primaries will ever be "enough" in that sense -- there will always be some that you can't mix from the others. Although at some point you can get "close enough". If two frequencies are extremely close to each other but not quite the same, and the human brain cannot tell them apart, then in practice it doesn't really matter that they are technically different. I have noticed that even good CYMK printers don't always give you a great representation of some hues -- certain shades of vibrant purplish-blue, for example. So which primaries you choose really does boil down a lot to what kind of result you're after. As you say, there is no one "correct" answer.

I didi it with Syringes to measure with percision and got different colors but I really enjoyed and approve of this lesson!! Just getting started with painting.. i'm a frustrated artist after an art teacher said I had no skill in art. So thank you so very much for teaching me bout the color wheel. I hope to keep learning from you!!

12:57 you messed up really badly right here. you said that totally wrong. You meant to say “since purple is closer to blue than orange is, this purple is a cooler color”, but that’s not what you said. You said “since red is closer to blue than orange is, red is a cool color” and that is simply not true Please correct this because it’s gonna confuse a lot of people

So true 1:16 there is nothing more important as an artist than paying attention to the details and being able to discern differences in light and dark saturation, contrast, color harmony, etc. Being able to think critically is one of the most important elements of being an artist even though it’s literally part of the opposite hemisphere of your brain and the one that you would use for art

Beautifully constructed video with great examples. Subscribed. Loved hearing about your story as a painter-turned writer. I graduated 3yrs ago with my Graphic Design degree from University, and I've been burnt out since with only doing some freelance work here and there. Can't fully seem to commit as I don't feel that same passion anymore. However, story planning has really gotten my wheels to spin creatively over these last few years. I was initially inspired from finding author Brandon Sanderson's BYU university lectures on KZread back in 2021 for me. There are many Graphic Design elements surrounding books too that I'll incorporate into my own work (ie. cover design, page layouts, typography choices, illustrations, etc.), which is great for potential self-publishing. I've just now officially started writing my story this week. I'll definitely have your examples in mind on writing with "compelling originality." I'm starting off small with a novella since i'm not a traditional writer who can commit to a mega series or a full-length book with confidence. Plus, usually a first work is the worst. So, better to start off small to learn from my mistakes before writing longer works. NOT THE HAIKU AT THE END LOL

Thanks for sharing, and I can 100% relate to your experience of burnout. For me, burnout is always just one step away from slamming the brakes on every area of my life, lol. My first book was written during burnout, so I know it's possible. It's basically the theme of the book--how I wrote the book when I was burned out. Its called How To Write This Book. I definitely can't recommend it as a great piece of literature, but it was proof to me that there is some kind of "easy creativity" that's possible with the right perspective. Good luck writing! You've got this! [ps I've heard of the Brandon Sanderson lectures, and I'm so glad you reminded me of them!]

Turning 50 also made me prioritize what I wanna to spend my time on and I fell that it is painting, I found your KZread channel today and I was thrilled that I found you, I watched 4 of your videos on painting which I love the philosophical side of it and I was soooo happy about it. I know watched this video and I am a little sad about no more painting videos coming up because you are amazing but I’m also happy you will still be doing the self discovery videos and club. I will definitely keep watching your videos and I would love to be part of your club! Thank you!

I just read your Ebook on creativity and I really like what you said, especially about making art for yourself and creating what YOU like, not what you think others will like. Also interesting is the idea that social media kills originality. I'm going to work on "weeding my garden" and I hope you'll keep developing your perspectives on creativity. Thanks Kyle!
