@piccolopete4673Ай бұрын
I typically use basic Hardwood Air float charcoal. I do a 75:15:10 milled about 6 hrs and then add maybe 2%Dextrin. That being said, I had a bad batch of black match recently. I think I put too much Charcoal in the mix and it made for some slower burning less reliable black match. I'm about due to make some more actually. I believe I use 4 strand cotton string and will span it 3 times so there is a total of 12 strands of cotton. It is more work to do multiple runs of 4 strand to get to that 12 strand (since you can just get 12strand string) but it makes for better black match. Black match does better if the strands are not all way tightly woven together, which is why I run multiple times with 4 strand to create more room and soak up the BP. I will also no longer start with dry cotton string. Meaning... I will have it all good to go, spray some isopropyl alcohol water mix onto the string to make it just a little damp, then add it to the BP slurry. Otherwise, the dry cotton will soak up all the liquid in the Black Powder slurry and it mixes funny. I'd rather just dampen the cotton string prior to putting into the slurry.

@piccolopete46732 ай бұрын
I have not. I also have not tracked that. I use my BP mostly for pyrotechnics so fouling is not as big an issue as if we're in a pew pew. I'd imagine best way to test would be to.... Weigh the lead media, mill a bunch of BP, then weigh again. Idk. Eventually I'll use in my muzzle-pewpew and may be worth testing. I cast some of my own lead media for milling. I don't own antimony so It does not have antimony in it, and therefore, I'd imagine could be more of a concern as the lead media I'd be milking would be softer. Again, not sure how much, if any, lead it puts into the BP. I've been curious though. I do have some lead media with antimony but I bought that stuff.

@piccolopete46735 ай бұрын
If making for muzzleloaders and flintlocks, you are much better milling for LONG times. It may be worth the little extra power to mill a long time. Like 12+ hrs. You want it as powerful as possible. If making for fireworking....again, I'd rather mill it 4-7 hrs and throw in some booster. Booster is an option in fireworking, it is NOT an option w/muzzleloaders and cannons.

Ill try it eventually, just don't have a puck mould to do this. I tried to make one but it didn't turn out. Eventually I'll try again to make it/I don't want to spend $100 for one as I think I can make one.
Have you seen whether lead media creates more burned powder fouling?
I used to have a pot belly, very smart animal!
Too smart! It's a devil. We have a rocky relationship him and I. I don't know why, but he typically attacks me any time I'm around him. Maybe a male dominance thing. You know, with all my abundance of testosterone and all. It probably smells it sweating out of my pores. Also, when small kids are near.... He pushes them to the ground , gets on top them, and pisses all over them. This is not a joke, I am dead serious. We are up to 3 victims (2 were my kids, one.....not my kid.) Yea, try explaining that to the parent why their kid is balling, covered in mud, and somehow has piss all over their back.
Damp chemical ingredient
That can do it but I know for a fact it was I screwed up the formula. Put tigers Tail in thinking it was air float charcoal :/
Toilet paper carbon
I have heard of toilet paper carbon. Ironically enough, I just saw it mentioned for the 1st time the other day on a FB page. I know nothing about it. I'll have to do some research on it.
That was actually hella cool 😄
Thanks!
Super useful, thanks bro!
No problem! Also, another thing..... If you are making BP for cannons, flintlocks, and muzzleloaders...... I've heard it's best little to no dextrin in. I have also heard that using Hardwood charcoal is best, because softwood charcoal makes the firearm VERY dirty.
Damn that's incredible! Whats the ratio?
m.youtube.com/@firesmithmanufacturing9376 These guys make a good video on making it.
How much powder are you ball milling at a time?
I have a homemade ball mill. I had a harbor freight one but wore it out pretty fast. I use the harbor freight cylinders/tubs on it. I'll put about 4.5lbs lead media in the single tub and 277grams of BP comp at a time. I'll spin two tubs at a time. That seems to be about the best ratio of lead balls to BP comp.
I pulled the plug on that behemoth from Woodysrocks pyro about 6 months ago 35lbs of lead it can churn out 1 kilo in about 3 hours.Keep the videos coming love your channel 🙏

The whistle mix will last for months in an air tight container, Once you put the whistle mix in a tube the shelf life is a few weeks. If less pressure is used while making the motor, they will fail in a week or two. Thanks😀 for the videos, nice job!
Thanks!!! Yea, I'm a bit boggled about it. I pressed it to the required 7500psi (on Woodysrocks pressure gauge.) I live in a dry state though. I also think simply taking the mix and adding camp fuel/Vaseline back into the mix would have revived it but..... IDK. Thought it would be more fun to send it :)
Pete. Loved this video. I was excited that you were willing to show your balls on camera but I was especially pleased with the detail you went into in describing their smell. You probably spent a good couple of minutes handling them and giving the viewer a very descriptive idea of the pungent aroma they put off. I almost felt as though I was there with you and they were right next to my face. Bravo! Another video very well done!
Hahaha
Thanks!!! Yea, not sure why they are two different colors, I never understood why I was given them that way. You also have to be careful with them. When smacking them together, when you smack them really hard it puts off a very loud noise and can hurt. Sometimes I even pinch my hands when doing this. Hearing protection may be worth having if you plan on getting aggressive with them. IDK, just a few things I have noticed.
i wonder if you can store them for long times if put into a freezer,packed in plastic ofc
I've tried everything. The whisle mix lasts for months in a container. Once you press it in a tube it's all over.
@@hunternedib1119good to know, ive got a 24mm waiting for over a year now, exspecting a huge cato
Putting the fuse in the core on whistles will cause CATOs too. You want the fuse just barely touching the outside edge
Yea, the issue ended up being.... it dried up (the Vaseline did.) I live in a dry state. Ill sometimes put a hole in the side just below where the whistle mix starts and fuse it from the side. I agree
You can get a harbor freight rock vibrator tub thing poke a sm. Hole in the 1100 put it on top it will vibrate in to the tub I'll be going for 1lb. Bach the big vibe. Tub might do 5 lb.
When putting rocket fuel in container do you compress with Ton press and wax the tubes ?
I use NEPT tubes. I press it to the proper psi as well. In the mix, I use Vaseline. I was told whistle has a shelf life as the Vaseline evaporates. I made several rockets, all of which worked a while back so I'm certain it must be the Vaseline evaporated since it is the same mix. I'll probably need to just send it (light it up) since the remaining loose whistle is unstable.
@@piccolopete4673use mineral oil or wax
How much do you find you spend on lumber for these? you might be able to get sticks even cheaper and easier in processing by growing and coppicing a willow bush or bamboo. and willow practically grows itself
cost me next to nothing. I do a lot of woodworking so I have a ton of it laying around that would have gone to waste. Just got to be careful not to lose a finger.
😮
I wonder if its really necessary to run these ingredients through a ninja grinder and screen before milling. The milling process should pulverize everything finer than the ninja could get it.
I only use the grinder on my charcoal. I make it from roughly 1/2 square Willow that I've split down from larger pieces.....lead balls take care of everything else. After milling for 4 hours I puck the mill powder and let it dry for 5-6 days then "corn" and classify for size.
I don't know for certain, but I think getting the chemicals as small as possible before putting into the container will decrease the time needed in tumbling to get good BP. Ive considered testing this theory (2 batches, one I blend and the other I keep stock) but I haven't done a video on it. Maybe some day. I hate ball milling the stuff for half a day. Anything I can do to decrease the ball milling time makes me happy.
Id like to puck it. I don't have anything to puck it in though. I thought about making it out of wood (because I am good with woodworking but don't have a metal lathe.) I'm not sure it would stand up to the forces and I would have to use a very strong wood. Where did you get your setup? You buy one or you make one?
Looks like it was a little slow compared to the CIA method I use and I also corn mine but a good job well done nothing blew up every one lived through the process so that's a plus like the video very much
Thanks! Yea, I was mostly going for basic concept (how much time milling before it has minimal benefit.) All my BP I make with hardwood air float Charcoal. One of these days Ill use some willow or something. I just need to find a neighbor with a willow tree.
Meaning less video which will earn you dislikes 🫳🏼. What are chemicals and the ratios?

Haha dope. Your neighbors dont make a fuss about that?
I mix about 12000 grams of this stuff a day very dangerous need to be aware of the risk and be cautious although we make it using only 3 ingredients with 1 being a binder. Ironically the less ingredients the more reactive and dangerous this stuff is especially in the early stages before you dampen the powder because of how dry and fluffy the powder is. Stay safe
dang, that's a lot. pretty scary stuff
A jarring beauty 😊
