This scene broke me. So... yeah... they got it! 😭 I didn't see it coming. I knew the game was about a man and a young girl, but when I started playing, I just assumed Sarah was that girl. But, nope. They got me. 10 mins into the game, and Naughty Dog had my emotions at their beck and call. And this scene was so important to the rest of the story. It needed to happen, and we needed to see it to fully understand Joel's journey. To understand why he was so resistant to Ellie. And to see the change and fully understand why Joel, in the end, would do absolutely anything for Ellie. And why we got the ending we did. Bravo Naughty Dog. Bravo Neil. Bravo Troy. Bravo Hana. 🙌🏻

Revisiting this. The performance that made the cut was indeed the best one because it's more painful when you hear Joel still trying NOT to cry and still bargaining -- "Don't do this to me, baby" -- instead of going straight to an anguished cry. It's several times more heartbreaking to see someone holding on and denying a death of a child for a few moments more, even when they're already holding a corpse. So that when that scene cuts to black (and leaps into the intro credits of the game), you know for sure that after those initial moments of denial and struggle not to go mad with grief, Joel does let out an anguished scream (like how Troy did it in other takes). They just don't show it to you and let your own imagination fill in the rest. That's how they make you cry. So that when the game starts with Joel years later, goddamn, the emotional weight of the darkness inside and around him hits you like a truck. 😅 And shit, you're starting the story. Phew. Wrecks your heart.

Great summary, you're absolutely right. Bryan Cranston has a really good analysis of emotions in cinema where he notes that when an actor won't let themselves laugh/cry, the audience has to feel it instead. Really applies here.

Great example of how common it can be to overact if you're trying to give your all for a performance, but you can see why the 'less is more' approach which Neil was looking for was more impactful as it suited the scene better and was more appropriate for Joel's character.

I know many hate Druckmann but I gotta say, he called it absolutely right here. When my father died, what I felt was wanting to scream, cry, yell, exactly like Troy's first take. To let all the emotion out. But funny thing is... I didn't. Because it didn't feel real yet. I couldn't process it... or accept it. So the take they ended up using, with Joel trying to "bargain"... call for Danny for help, even if he knows he can't help. Call for Sarah... He's at a complete loss and disbelief. It's something ... impossible.
