My two main interested in life are making things and making money and I decided the best way to combine them is to make houses (my first love is cars but there ain't no chance of making money in that game). Only problem with that is employing someone else to do it for you means that you don't make much money (they do)
So that means doing it yourself. And I have to say its been a steep learning curve, I'm pretty practical but I had no building trade experience before I started this, as well as hard work but ultimately very enjoyable.

Hi.how are you now?
EXOCET KIT IN NZ 17K$ ISH NZ
I'm busy with an old Volvo with the same Carbs. If the mixture is too lean it will do this as well. years ago I had a "colourtune" kit I used to set up bikes and multiple carbs and it was excellent and very easy to use . I wonder if one can still find it.
My guess is crossed ignition wires. I really believe it is a timing issue.
Block face needs attention as it is pitted and dirty, it should be unmarked bright metal before you put a gasket on. The valve seats look to be badly ground and a single angle grind, and valves seem to have a very wide grind on them. On the inlet manifold there should be a gasket on either side of the black thermal spacer or the manifold may leak, also check the carb mating flanges are flat using a surface plate, or a sheet of PLATE glass. The nice man has sold you a duff head! also check firing order on plug leads is correct, get 1 and 2 or three and four on the wrong way round can cause engine to run poorly and spit back. Phil
Burnt valves are normally exhaust rather than inlet. Possibly inlet clearances, or timing.
valves intake over tightened ?
And exhaust clearances also as unspent gasses need to leave or they will pop back into the intake. It’s more obvious with diesel’s to the ear though.
It could be as simple as head gasket leak between cylinder 2 and 3. These heads are notorious for heads being shallow between 2 and 3.
So many test one can do. Lean, timing, valve timing, compression test etc. Before ripping the head off
But then I wouldn't of had the fun of making a video about removing the head
Did you check the intake valve clearances?
All valve clearances were set before I started it. Valve seats were a tad rusty so have been lapped. To be honest I used a cheap head gasket which I think might be the source of all my woes, got a payen one now
@@BuilditUK Maybe check the height of the dowel that locates the head and gasket, I have come across these being a tad too long and not allowing the head to be pulled down onto the gasket. correctly. It is unusual for a gasket to leak between 3 & 4 . As I am sure probably you would probably know, heads usually warp in the middle. If you still have a problem when you get the new gasket in, it would pay you to borrow a cylinder leakage tester, ( which will allow you to blow compressed air into the cylinder when the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke) you will be able to get an idea of where the cylinder leakage is going.
I really like that model 156! How is 156, 2.0 jts, 2004?
Really enjoyed this video as I have a very similar Marlin. The only one in Sweden (as far as I know) Also built on a 1800 Marina but the engine is a 2 liter (B20) Volvo. It has the original Marina holed steel wheeels painted silver.
Thanks for your comments. Would be really interested to see some pictures/video your your car

im gonna buy a k series because im cazy . yea its sheet car but its fun easy to fix
Awesome.
So 3 people have disliked this video. Seems a bit harsh to me. It is just a video of my fixing up an old kit car after all
I think a Vectra of the same age would be much much worse in terms of clomping suspension etc. I have a late 06 9-3 Aero with the fact lift interior, big improvement over the earlier million button one.
Bro has hands of steel
If y’all so worried about a guard go somewhere else !!!!!
Watching this guy used grinders very scary No disc guards ahh...loose eyes, fingers 🤞😢if disc breaks.. always clamps down work piece 😢😮😊
I agree with Brian. It looks really nice, but it needs a longer handle. Pretty cool 😎
So i saw a 2003 MX5 MK2 for sale and thought maybe i buy that for a bit fun and use every now and then not as a daily i already have a car for that , however after doing a bit of reserach on these cars tonight i stay away , even though £1600 not a lot for a car to pay £1600 for basicly a rust bucket is just chucking money down the toliet.
My question... Does this kind of cutting and grinding compromise the structural integrity of the blade?
Exactly. I got same question. I think that this kind of cutting and grinding can easily over heat the steel and make it very soft so it cant be sharpened. I'm curious how this guy did that
You could reheat treat it.
Nope. it does not harm it so long as you keep cooling it a bit at the edge or if you dont get it so hot that the metal changes colour on the surface. If you see the thiner edge turn blue as yyou are grinding then it may harm the temper . It will only be a problem though if you intend to put the finished axe to realy hard use. This is only a very simple guide for this example. metalurgy and heat is a huge subject.
Wheels too modern ..would look better with spokes & motorcycle fenders
Having built and owned several Marlins those wheels are the factory supplied preferred wheel at the time, after all this is a 70's car, when alloys where all new and the rage to have.
@@DavidMBanes Sprayed them back to silver now. Suits the car much better. Not sure you could find wire wheels hubs tp fit anyway
Bolt on wire wheel adaptors are available
I really enjoyed mine, back in the day. Also a Marina 1800tc base. Great fun. Not sure I'd be able to resist if another one dropped under my nose! Hope it passes it's MOT. 🙂
thanks. Going to need some new brake callipers I suspect before a successful visit to the mot station
Does it cost alot to buy these type of houses
not in that condition it wasn't. Paid £110k for it
Did you ever get any of these ideas done?
great informative clip on the freelander, have td4,ive had all these problems and more, lastest issue small hole in master fuel pump, yes the one on the engine, speicalest tool needed to get off,.but all the faults love the look of this soon to be a british classic.keep up the clips.very funny,
I’m glad I just found this channel 👍 I was just thinking of cars I’ve driven through my life. And it was an early 2000’s 156 wagon 2.4jtd-m. In black work matching leather. I didn’t buy it at the time sadly. And can’t remember why! Anyway, But damn it was a great drive from what I remember. Full of torque & power.. I’ll keep an eye on your content. More to watch over the coming months as I’ve subbed 👍
MrTAKIS1984...I have a question...did you have to remove the whole engine to do this? I was told by a shop you do...but see videos where they don't.
No sois aliados sois enemigos.
Good old landy free ,its acctually good car but only with bmw engine i still have one he never left me on the road .
I've had 2 freelander 2.0 TD4's, a GS model and a KALAHARI model. They are sh*t... That's the most polite way of putting it.. People think they are reliable are they f*ck... Timing chains go very easily. And even to replace them your looking well over £1000. Dual mass flywheels are crap until you change to a solid flywheel, the rear diffs are made of chocolate, the front driveshafts wear out very quickly when you make it front wheel drive. Genuinely guys I wouldn't recommend buying a TD4. Because when the timing chain goes you may aswell scrap your freelander. All TD4's tend to be high miles now which means they are all a ticking time bomb with the timing chains unless your incredibly lucky and have proof its have been changed. Buy a RAV4 or CRV. Much better made 4x4
What about if you get an earlier TD4 with the Rover engine, belt driven?
@@neildempster2827 no I had a year 2000 2.0 GS TD4 and a 2003 KALAHARI 2.0 TD4. All the TD4 are the same bmw engines which are all chain driven. I've just bought a 2005 Xtrail 2.2 DCI SVE, Fully loaded this car came out around same time as the freelander and this is 10 times better than any freelander. Also has diff locks, Jap cars are better than British cars anyway. Landrover are crap for reliability. It's cool to own one. But once they let you down constantly you call it a day with them 😂
@@neildempster2827 I do believe the 1.8 rover petrol engines in the Freelanders are belt driven. But they eat head gaskets. Honestly my advice to anyone looking at a 4x4 around the same price as a freelander, I'd hands down with go with Nissan Xtrail, Honda CRV or Toyota Rav4. All japanese and reliable 👍🏻
Tremendous work Richard, you’ve been busy!!
Cheers Steve
I nearly peed myself laughing at this, my freelander is 20 years old and still going strong . why not fix the diff ? lmao
Español Inglés Hello friends, I have a little problem. I have a Freelander 1 TD4 with BMW and I have a horrible sound in the area of the auxiliary belt and its tensioner. My surprise is that there is no place to work on the auxiliary belt and remove its tensioner. Could someone tell me if there is any trick or procedure that could help me so that I do not have to remove the engine. We've been thinking about how to do it for days. Thank you very much
Its a knacker anyway
Just buy a mk 1
NA's rust like hell too and considerung u pay a lot more for it its not worth to buy it just because of that
@@rem362 The places an NA rust are a lot more manageable, and here in the UK the NA's are only about £1,000 more at most.
It’s a throw away buy new world now days. with my td4 I learnt to live with her and least i actually know how my car works Mechanically unlike most who pay mega bucks to get easy jobs done at the local garage ?? Bonkers society ay !!
I expected to see more than one plaster on your fingers!!! Even so, great effort and a great result
Ive got a freelander 1 td4 2006 sport. And its been one of the most reliable cars ive ever owned. Its done 180'000 miles and still runs great . Its been waded, green laned. And tows my mini digger. Ive had it 5 years and id trust it to go anywhere And all ive ever changed is the vcu and a alternator along with servicing it Those old k series are what gave them such a bad name
Love this car! I own a 16v, but searching for the 20v TI for several years. Since it seems there are no more left I began to watch for the 159 2.4 210 hp Q4 Ti. What engine was your 159 equiped with? I know which common issues on both cars, so a part from that, which one do you prefer and why? What about differences in "driving pleasure"?
Everything I have heard about the 159 210bhp engine is that Alfa managed to take the best engine in the world and ruin it. And even my local Alfa garage calls the 159 the disaster car. hold out for a good 156 though think looking for a TI might. be a long shot
@@BuilditUK I read from the Q4 owners that it behaves almost like a RWD, similarly to the xDrive. Combined with an almost doubled torsion stiffness I would have thought it couldn't be such a disaster. Thanks for your advice, let's see what I will find.
These engines are good for 400k miles
What causes those noise bumbs when changing gears? My freelander has those noises too! Should I worry???
Rear Diff mounts. Change 'em for Polly bushes if you can. They'll well outlast OEM ones.
Omg. No real safety guidelines here. Where is the guard on your grinder. If your so good at making an axe head then make yourself a decent bench with a good vice.
WOW 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍 😍😍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍💯💯💯
Thanks. Hope you clicked the like button 😁
Should you buy an X Type? Definitely not unless you are a real Jaguar enthuiast. I am and am onto my third X Type but they are a modern over-engineered car. If you can't repair it your self it could cost you more than you paid for the car to repair it. Contrary to Ford and other fancy critiques, they have every little connection with the Mondeo (about19% in total) If you are insisting on buying one then go for the 2.1ltr petrol to cut out some of the engineering problems. The 2.1ltr is not AWD all wheel drive which means it does not have a transfer box, rear drive shaft and rear diff. It also only has one exhaust pipe to the rear. The three rear park plugs and coils are accessible through the intake manifold which can not be accessed on the 3ltr without fully removing the intake manifold and lots of other stuff. The X Type is the last of the Traditional looking Jaguars but most of them will finish up on the scrap heap because of their modern over-engineering. Now Jaguar are not all responsible for the down side of the X Type. You the buyer is. You wanted a V6 etc when a 4 cylinder 2.5ltr would have provided plenty of smoother power and would have been much more practicle. The motorist are their own worst enemies. They just want what they don't need and that's why new cars are depreciating so much today. Over-engineering instead of old practicality. Good luck.
Ive had my 08 plate X Type over 10 yrs now . Had the opportunity on a number of occasions to upgrade . Honestly I carnt imagine my life without this car . Future classic or not I don’t care mine is staying regardless of cost 🥰
saying the X type is a Mondeo is like saying the Mondeo is a Mazda As surprise surprise the CDW27 platform Is Derived from the Mazda GE platform If you actually look into how cars are built you will see that Car manufacturers Share parts and designs from all type so this brand loyalty is silly to say the least this is why Modern cars all look the same And that gets me onto the engine block for the 2.2 D It's not a Mondeo engine it's actually used on multiple cars including Ford Transit Ford Mondeo Jaguar X-Type Land Rover Defender Ford Ranger T6 Mazda BT-50 Peugeot Boxer Citroën Relay So is the Mondeo Actually a Peugeot??
I'm pretty sick of people knocking Freelanders. You can get a bad example of just about any car you choose to name. I bought a 2001 1.8 petrol Freelander sight unseen on the basis that it had 4 brand new General Grabbers fitted and the guy selling it only wanted £250. There were two issues declared on sale, both were dealt with for less than £100 and yes the Grabbers were new £600 worth of tyres. This was in 2015. I still have the car, it's taken me/us to Sweden (by road) three times, Cornwall twice, Yorkshire three times and Scotland once. If you look after your car it will look after you, I've had none of the issues that so many people knock the Freebie for so don't listen to the knockers, they just want to get on YT. This car aint never leaving this family unless I use it as my coffin!!
What mileage do you get
These gave gone up in value!
