We are a couple who recently traded in our hectic California lifestyle for a simpler way of living on a homestead in Tennessee. With a background in professional photography, we left our city life behind and set out on a new adventure in search of a more meaningful and sustainable way of living.
Our journey has been filled with challenges, but we've found joy in every step of the way. From raising our own livestock and growing our own food to building our own home and living off the land, we've discovered the true beauty of a self-sufficient lifestyle.
Through our KZread channel, we hope to share our experiences, tips, and knowledge with those who are interested in pursuing a similar path. Join us as we navigate the ups and downs of homesteading, and learn how to live a more intentional and fulfilling life.

Thank you for the video and recipe! I can't have cow's milk, but goat is fine. The store stopped my favorite milk cream so I've decided it's time to make my own.
Does rain harvesting work if land is completely hard black rock inside ? I want to dig 8 feet deep and 6x6 to leave rain water into that digged area
I recently hooked up a system for catching rain water. We went with a diverter, which is supposed to help with debris removal, but love your idea. Seems like it will work well. Maybe on my next barrel 😊
Despite the crime in Nashville and Memphis, and Knoxville, I think Tennessee is one of the best states. 4 seasons, mountains, valleys, farmland, centrally located, and lots of people who homestead. Someday I hope and pray that I'll have 5-20 acres in Tennessee, so I can have some livestock. Thank you for sharing this about the Nubians. They seem like a great choice.
Send me an email would love to stay in contact.
We have the same Ice Cream maker and I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you make yogurt add it to your custard and some fruit and you have great frozen ice cream or Sherbet
Thanks for the tips, it’s my first time trying to grow pumpkins
Wow a lot of sugar😬Can I use honey instead?
Yes of course!
It’s so refreshing to see a building project that isn’t overrun with store bought lumber
Appreciate the support! Im actually building a worm farm out of the same wood.
@@LittleFarmLand I’m looking forward to watching it
Thank you for your video
You are welcome
Yum!
I am very interested to see how these three methods fare through the growing season. Thanks for sharing
You and me both!
They taste great
Hunt tried one yet! I have heard that from more than just you.
Welcome to Tennessee! I live in McMinn County.
I’m too new to know where that is hahaha.
They also eat fire ants. And they sleep in the trees. They’re really wonderful birds.
Queen Anne lace where I live has a purple tiny flower inside the lace , Wild carrots that look like parsnip roots are another plant and the hemlock a thrid not to be confused with the conifer hemlock 🌲 tree and coming in fourth yarrow looks a bit like the above three plants
Yes it's true🎉
Yes sir! Tomatoes for months❤
Adam CALHOUNs,,,,little bro????🤣😎🇺🇸👊 Show me a mater sammich, grown like this versus one done the other way?!?!😎🇺🇸👊
I mean sure but those roots on the stems aren’t great for nutrient uptake
They are soil block root systems.
You're right! I don't know how many people I know didn't do that ! Great opening!
We use neem oil here in India to do the same after a quick brushing, as flies can lay eggs in their fur and that can cause skin infection and lead to even worse conditions so treat them from the root
Don’t the soil cubes crumble when you water them?
Just don't try to eat wild carrots and you'll be fine.
I learned how to make soil blocks… and made 1000s last year… but got out of that line of work
Water hemlock is in my area it mixs with queen Anne "Purple spots purple grave Hairy legs of the carrot queen "
Queen Anne’s lace also usually has a black dot in the middle, my mom told me when I was a kid it was because when Queen Ann was darning her lace, she pricked her finger on a carriage ride and then threw the bloodstain lace onto the side of the road where it turned into a flower
That’s so beautiful omg ❤ imma tell my kiddos that and pass on your grandmas tale
Them there are pee-in-the-beds. You pick either of them up youre gonna pee the bed.... Imagine my surprise when i repeates that in highschool and found out that was just an our family thing
Queen Anne's lace has a petticoat
I wish I had know this as a child I had to find out the hard way.
Did you eat it or did you touch it?
@@LittleFarmLand I pulled it up intending to eat it but when I put it in my mouth it burned so I spit it out and rinsed my mouth and hands I ended up with some blisters I think. I was really young so I may have also thrown up I did several times growing up but it was different things so I may have misremembered the occasion.
I used to think it was queen Ann's lace! Thanks for the info!
You are so welcome!
Seems like so many plants are poisonous or toxic, makes you wonder how humans figured out the non-toxic ones
Not much to wonder about it was basic trial and error. People learned to avoid the plants that were killing people🤷
@@garrettcurry6637 kinda, but I think it’s a little more complicated than that
It's probably best to not mess with this edible. Poison hemlock IS the most toxic plant in my area. There's no coming back from that mistake.
Wow and I see these plants everywhere, now I’m actually going to see if it’s hemlock or wild carrot. Very cool
Thanks for the warning
Any time!
I agree. Life saving information!
This is very good video. 😀😃😄
That’s a small truck
its the engine that counts! lol
😂
What's your spacing when planting for upward growth? I assume you can plant closer than if on the ground or no?
Way closer. This was last year so if I remember correctly I think I went as close as 6 inches. That might be a little close for plant competition but it still worked out pretty well as you can see.
Looks like a good option to have with children also.
I just made a homemade goat, milk ice cream video a few get a chance maybe that will inspire you
Thanks for this info. We are looking for some goats for our homestead. We live in the mountains and have a lot of hilly area.
What type of goats are you considering? We have Nubians.
Hi Dear, I saw your KZread channel video and understood that Very nice video. You have 1.97K subscribers but videos are not more watched and subscribers because your video is not SEO. I have analyzed and realized that your KZread channel is not progressing and improving. It is responsible for: 1. Channel videos are not properly SEO 2. Videos are not reaching the people 2. There is no rank tag in the Video 3. Video SEO score is 16 out of 100 but SEO score should be 90+ to rank video 5. Channels tags not good quality 6. No video tag and other technical problems Do you want all the problems solved? I can help you.
3 or 4 c milk?? Your recipe says 4, video says 3 😂
Oops sorry! I normally use just 3 cups of milk.
How does the block stay intact when instead of the roots you only have one seed 🤔
It’s a healthy balance of not letting it get too dry or too wet. If I leave stagnant water in the trays, it will slowly dissolve the blocks and if the blocks get too dry, they can crumble a bit easily, but they also do pretty well if I do, let them get a little dry without them crumbling.
I actually should also add that once the blocks have a decent amount of roots growing through them they hold together a lot better and I don’t have to be so careful watering them
How have you tamed the keet production? Or do you just eat them to control the number every year?
If I was getting too many keets, I am in an area that I can sell them very easily. I also have never had any of my guineas sit on any of their eggs so I’ve never had the issue.
@@LittleFarmLand I have some broody females for ya ❤️
Great video!! I wish we had soil blocks this year now. Next year for sure! Also, loofah.. experiment with letting them dry on vine and let us know what you think of them compared to the way you are currently doing it.
Thanks for the tips! I’ll give it a try!
Wow! I had no idea!
I can get these from my work for $20 apiece just installed two in sequence for rain collection.
20 bucks is a great price and it seems that you might know the storage history too
@@LittleFarmLand food additives, and we steam clean them. I also cut the tops off and use them for scrap metal bins at the shop.
that scrap metal is so useful too!
Great info!
Glad it was helpful!
I saw your short video about purchasing safe ibc totes. I want to buy some too. How do i purchase them?
Let's start a convo through email to stay in contact and help you find some near your location. you can get safe ones that are used and cheeper if you are willing to do the research and I dont mind helping you. send us an Email.
Better root system, equals a better plant
No, but it will dry out much faster.
