Yes, today being the 80th anniversary of D-Day, this place would seem very distant for a young American soldier who is surrounded by Nazis who are trying to kill you. Hungry, cold, scared, tired and alone without your fellow soldiers, just trying to get back to your group. It was not so very long ago people, those who don't know anything about WWII should read up. The many horrors that were experienced by soldiers, airmen, sailors, and the townspeople are not so easily erased, as the damage done goes down through generations of survivors. Don't think that when the war ended and the men and women returned home that what they experienced just disappeared. It stayed with them for a lifetime and had an effect on their marriages, jobs, friends and little children. It's still alive for millions.
