  It is laughable that India plans to replicate the Maldives in the Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands. They are 36 islands, including sandbanks and shoals. The Maldives has 1193 islands, including about 200 inhabited islands. Excellent infrastructure already exists, including airports and the world's largest, seaplane fleet. It is entirely possible to plonk the Maldives entire population into a few islands, including artifical islands- the latter are typically larger than natural islands. So the potential for the Maldives to grow as a tourist hub is immense. The Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi Islands are like a small atoll in the Maldives- perhaps like Meemu Atoll, but smaller. There is also an island (Minicoy) detatched from the main Laccadive and Amindivi group, which is geographically, linguistically and culturally closer to the Maldives than to India. An uninhabited island, Viringili, lies off Minicoy, across a narrow channel.

  ​@@sekharsahoo that was not a meltdown and there was no abuse. Rather, it was a natural reaction of a sovereign people against a foreign bully, namely, India. I am from New Zealand. In July 1985, French military agents infiltrated New Zealand and blew up a "Green Peace" (a protest group, of which I have never been a fan) ship used in protests against French nuclear testing in Mururoa Atoll in the neighbouring French Polynesia. The fallout against France was immediate. Even mild-mannered politicians (in those days, most of our politicians were polite) joined in, in the loud, anti-France rhetoric. Even the humble baguette, also known as "French bread", remained unsold in bakeries. That is exactly what's happening in the Maldives over India's refusal to remove its unwelcome military personnel on the islands, who were invited by an unpopular former regime. Do you blame the Maldivians? India's welcome no longer exists in the Maldives. So the polite thing to do is for Indian military to leave quietly. Their welcome no longer exists, if it ever existed. India must understand that the Maldives is its soverign equal. It is not an Indian union territory.

  Tourism in the Maldives operated for decades without hosting Indian visitors. Indians simply didn't have the money to spend on travel in those days. Italians, Germans, and the Swiss were the sources of the earliest clientele of the Maldives tourism industry. Great Britain came to the scene much later. Russia, Ukraine, other eastern bloc countries, Japan and China also joined in after the end of the Cold War. Following covid-19, things have changed a bit. Indians began coming because of the availability of cheaper than usual rates. Also, the relatively new concept of guesthouses (basically, cheap bed and breakfast joints) and homestays have made the Maldives affordable to Indians and even Bangladeshis, over the past couple of years. Covid-19 will subside, and things will settle. The Chinese and other East Asians have also not returned yet. When things return to pre-covid levels, Indians would again be struggling to afford the Maldives. I'm not so sure, if Indian bravado would be able to survive beyond that.
