@ColonThree3126 ай бұрын
To be fair . . . he made his own share of awful, terrible decisions. (See: Polyphemus) Also, additionally, what we know of his journey is largely from his retelling . . . and he's our favorite little liar. Who knows what really happened? :D
@iliketea14276 ай бұрын
@@ColonThree312 actually in the Odyssey, a conscious Polyphemus was still incredibly strong despite being blinded and they had to quickly sneak out of the cave under sheep to avoid being detected. There were no thoughts about turning back and finishing it because they wanted to get the hell out of there while they still could (and keep their lives). The whole Odysseus being questioned demanded to kill Polyphemus (by Athena) is just another thing Epic made up, because there was no way they could in the Odyssey unless they somehow over powered him again (the first time they just tricked him into getting drunk, but it's not like Polyphemus would fall for that again). The only terrible descion Odysseus makes is revealing his name to Polyphemus, BUT REMEMBER: that wasn't what really delayed them because it was the crew opening the bag that took them further away from Ithaca (in fact the whole confrontation with Poseidon in Epic is also made up) My point still stands that is was the majority (of the time) the crew's own horrible decision making that leads to the journey home taking even longer: - immediately trusting the lotus eaters to eat the lotus and having to be saved by Odysseus, proving without Odysseus most of them are incompetent - opening the bag Aeolus gave them despite the specific orders not to, the moment Odysseus isn't looking. Again if they had Odysseus they would not have screwed up. - immediately trusting Circe (despite every other being on the other islands trying to kill them) and having to be saved by Odysseus AGAIN. - finally eating Helios' sacred cows despite the specific orders not to AGAIN, the moment Odysseus isn't looking AGAIN (honestly the crew never learns). Then of course they get killed and Odysseus is stranded for 7 years because of their actions. Let's face it: without Odysseus the crew wouldn't have made it home anyway and would either be dead or trapped forever. Btw the theory that Odysseus made it all up doesn't make sense at all cause at the end of the day Odysseus isn't real and Homer wrote the story, meaning everything was intended as Homer wrote it and there's no mention of Odysseus making it up. Why would Homer wrote a false story in his epic anyway? That's like writing "it was all a dream plot" in a movie/story but the dream was 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙨 𝙞𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙣𝙤 𝙋𝙊𝙎𝙄𝙏𝙄𝙑𝙀 𝙤𝙧 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙪𝙧𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙬𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮. Who would want to read or listen to a story where the most epic part is made up by one of the characters anyway? TLDR: it's mostly the crews fault but if Odysseus could have somehow been watching them 24/7 (though physically impossible) or they were capable/competent on their own without him maybe they could have made it. Also why would Odysseus make it up?
@ColonThree3126 ай бұрын
@@iliketea1427 I was really just referring to Odysseus giving his name to the cyclops and kickstarting a feud with Poseidon that, well, ended up having him stranded on Calypso's island for 7 years because the other gods (like Zeus) were unwilling to intervene due to Poseidon's grudge against him. I think it's fun to think of the Odyssey as a framed narrative, and Odysseus as a flawed narrator who may have embellished certain events to make himself look better. At the end of the day, it's all fun ways of appreciating a story that's been told and enjoyed for hundreds of years.
@ColonThree3126 ай бұрын
@@iliketea1427 It's also worth noting that he definitely had motive to lie and make himself look better, considering he was presenting the story to a king he hoped would help him get home! I love Odysseus, and I think he's a fascinating character - this interpretation is another way of exploring his potential.
