    All cops either enforce bad laws, or choose to not do their job by not enforcing them. All cops are either bad people or bad police officers. ACAB is an inherent fact to the job, until and unless we stop having bad laws, but that itself is also impossible. The only good law is one that doesn't need to be written down because no one breaks it anyway.

    Out of any of the shows with featured clips I had only seen the hilarious Simpsons parody one. Even though I was a teen in the 90s, I did actually manage to never watch Cops or any of these other "reality" cop shows. It reminds me of art history/film history class when they talked about the "documentary style". It plays into reality being unrealistic.... --- like how war movies have a desaturated color palette even though blood is bright red. Anyway: Oh my god. Wtf. Like, I knew, but not with that much detail. Thank you for doing this. I would not be able to sleep at night if my job was going through all of this footage. I had previously shared the episodes of the Copaganda series with my friends but I don't think I know anyone who doesn't already agree and it's definitely going to keep me up tonight because that was so disturbing. I can't do that to my friends. I still think this is really valuable commentary. I don't envy the horrible job for which you volunteered yourself. Kudos to you.

    I have watched one episode of cops in the early 2000s. It contained a segment from my home town (Fort Myers, FL). The only thing that happened all night was a lady had an owl fall down her chimney and the cop chased it out of her living room. I wish more episodes were like that. Edit: 16:10 is from the same county at least, so it seems like they've been back, and managed to drum up some "real crime"

    I remember watching an episode with my dad when i was about 9 or 10. There was a man resisting arrest in a nonviolent manner. Just curled up on the ground trying to cover his face as this lady cop started punching him in the gut and face. There were 3 other cops there too just letting this happen. It was brutal. He had a broken nose and cuts and bruises all over his face. It was horrifying to watch and it was treated as just normal...

    1:06:00 WOW. I don't think I've ever seen such openly, not merely biased, but outright hateful, not to mention crazy passive-aggressive, behavior from a host who was ostensibly giving a guest a last word. And the quote about being so proud of his dad for arguing Citizen's United... I truly hate Dan Abrams, as a human being. And it can be guaranteed that 95% of his success is a direct result of "who your family knows"... he certainly isn't any miracle of on-air charisma, and he has always given me a bad vibe intuitively, well before learning any of this. I'd love to drop him in Gaza right now, watch him have a stroke at the prospect of having to ask the sub-humans around him for help.

    I'm in the process of trying to quit weed (I know that sounds stupid to a lot of people, but it's genuinely very difficult to get through for me). That final section on Floyd Abrams, the history he has with Citizens United, while he's trash-talking the people who embody the actual spirit of "Free Speech", straight up only because he doesn't like what they're saying, and because the audience in general loses their minds at the notion of college students expressing themselves, having opinions about foreign policy, and so forth.... Makes it hard for me to remember why exactly I shouldn't simply smoke on a regular basis, to maintain sanity in this hellscape of injustice and open bad faith. I mean I know why ultimately, that I'll be happier/healthier in general once I get there... but damn if this world, and this country specifically, don't constantly give me reasons to want to tune out everything completely and smoke and pay attention to something fun and pleasant....

    Seeing this show come on TV as a kid is probably the reason I even have internalized racism. I grew up in a predominantly white enclave in a pretty diverse area, so I never got to interact much with POC in the school system. I didn't really start getting my bad assumptions challenged until I went to college. No one in my life was racist. Rather, they actively taught my sister and I that racism existed and was bad. The problem is that watching a bunch of POC acting crazy and getting arrested at like 10 years old sticks with you, whether you like it or not.

    Remember, the only goddamn things you say to a cop 1. Am I free to go (If no) 2. Why am I being detained (If prompted during an arrest, though you can in some cases delay until you actually arrive at a station) 3. You legal name, DOB, address (or "no permanent address") - give them your ID if you have it 4. I would like to speak to a lawyer Then you SHUT THE FUCK UP until your lawyer arrives Edit: if you're driving a car it's a little different. They are entitled to see your drivers license and the registration for the car in that case

    If a system produces bad apples does it make sense to not wonder what system might not produce bad apples? ACAB just meant recallable community police instead of a state institution with a monopoly on violence and an over reliance on the benevolency of its members from the top down.

    @@funnylittlecreature Which one of us has a delusional view of reality, somebody who acknowledges the good and bad of policing or somebody who is deranged enough to think other people orient themselves around the police, I know you don't have a father figure, substitutes are healthy for knowledge and growth but the police or justice system isn't one of them. It's like your just pathological in your hatred. Society couldn't function without police, their essential service is preventing victimizers from predating on innocent people. There are always people who would rather better their own lot at the expense of your and use force to do it. The real conversation is how to maximize that function of policing and minimize the negative outcomes. If you're asking what did he get wrong in the video, basically everything, like I was listening point by point and everything he said is just easily explainable and wrong on it's face. Black people arrested 26 percent of the time compared to whites at 24, that's kind of expected when black people commit half the crime, in fact that's a pretty good ratio. More black people injured in police chases but doesn't mention that they are massively over represented in fleeing. Or the guy who got a vehicular homicide when he ran from the police, and I'm not kidding, Skip was saying "can you understand why a black man wouldn't want to get pulled over" Yeah no shit I can understand why anybody wouldn't want to get pulled over, that doesn't mean you can just flee. He basically says why not just let them go when they flee because it creates risk which is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, "sorry, we know that guy had a warrant for multiple dui and has a revoked license and 10 driving while suspended and hit and run but every time we find him he just flees so in order to prevent risk we just let him go and that's why he mowed down your kids on a bender". There's so many easily explainable knock down arguments to everything he's said. There are problems with policing but essentially Skip also just has a pathological hatred of them and just wishes they wouldn't exist so every time they're fulfilling their function this guy sees it as a problem.

  • @funnylittlecreature
    @funnylittlecreatureКүн бұрын

    @@bencheevers6693 I ought to be the one saying that last part. Policing is inherently a negative thing. There is no "positive" of policing to acknowledge. Even if there were, how is pointing out the negatives "delusional"? Even if they don't spend every two seconds saying "but police can do good things too!", that doesn't make what they're saying any less valid.

  • @bencheevers6693
    @bencheevers6693Күн бұрын

    @@funnylittlecreature No, police broadly and overall are just "doing good things" it's the very few and fairly rare egregious things they do that are the problem, if policing were inherently negative it wouldn't exist. Police have existed before governments, people don't want to live without police and have paid for that service voluntarily, every county west of Virginia had police first, government second. Secondly, there are things to criticize police for but he didn't really get there, he was basically mad they exist, that's what I mean, every argument he brought up about how the police act in the show which is the easiest area to criticize he fumbled the ball. Point by point he was just bringing up dumb irrelevancies, I was listening while at work today and while mudding and kind of zoned out I was just listening to every point he brought up and realizing every single one is easily explainable, not controversial, not an issue.
