Wonderful recital ! At 1:20 (and later), other pied butcher birds can be heard singing in the distance. It seems that they are listening to others singing and responding to them.

If I give them a feed I can nearly guarantee something like 15 minutes of song with little to no repetition. They are brilliant singers.

Their calls are definitely saying something, coordinated, timed to response from surrounds, very interesting.

I wish I had the privilege of listening to such melody. In the US the invasive European Starling brings a beautiful song that is almost similar but they are aggressively exterminated since they aren't native. 😪

I like that the tones are not in the 'western' scale - composers like Mahler listened to bird song and used it in his compositions.

... though our duet is more like conversation. i think for the birds, it might be something different, perhaps even more like music or "phatic" communication, that the birds are doing. hollis taylor has written some great things about pied butcher bird duets...

I am an Aussie living in Germany. i just love the butcherbird and magpie song, and the kookaburras. Whenever I go home, I thrill to the morning chorus of birdsong. I know I am really home in Australia (Brisbane). Nowhere else in the world is the birdsong so beautiful. We need to do everything possible to protect our native wildlife.
