Now We Roam

Now We Roam

Hey everyone, I'm Jared! This channel is all about exploring in my trusty truck camper and living a simple life on the road.

Join me as I hit the open road in my 2007 Okanagan 811SL. It's a cozy camper with everything I need, minus the hefty hotel bill! We boondock in incredible locations, from peaceful lakes and rivers to awe-inspiring national parks and state forests. ️

The journey hasn't always been smooth sailing. My camper even had a fiery welcome on the way to Florida, but we patched it up and are back on track for adventure!

Whether you're a seasoned explorer or curious about a simpler lifestyle, I love sharing my experiences with you. Expect stunning scenery, hidden gems, and maybe a few bumps in the road along the way.

    I just finished this yesterday. Thanks for making such a great how to video. QQ Is it still holding up? It is hot here and Texas and the glue kinda stayed soft all day but overnight it seemed to have hardened. Hope it doesn't soften back up with the heat everyday.

    I wish it was natural wood I would have kept that, this is pressed wood with a sticker on it, and the camper was in a fire, so most of the wood was damaged or replaced with a different species, so going natural would have not been very attractive, so paint it is! Thanks for saying hello!

    Appreciate the video. I was excited to see how mine turned out today but unfortunately the adhesive does not seem strong enough and the flaps are already peeling away from the vinyl when I rolled it up for the first time (I let it sit for a few days before rolling). Idk if it’s the vinyl or the adhesive or the way I had the flaps set before setting the vinyl, but when I roll it up the flaps disconnect in two different locations so when I roll it down, it will not sit flat. I don’t want to redo the whole thing again but it looks like that’s what I’ll have to do.

  • @NowWeRoam
    @NowWeRoam25 күн бұрын

    Hard to say, I know on the old vinyl that was on mine the slats were separating from each other and it wouldn't sit flat unless I played with each one while rolling it up, the that was caused by the vinyl lifting off, hard to tell though they are all a beast of their own making.

    I have glued my vinyl back on three times now just this summer. With how hot it is in Nevada the glue melts and I can just peal up the vinyl. I have been doing some research, and the Revolver X4 has a rubber base instead of fabric. It was a fix they made due to places with high heat. How do I find the product they are talking about because the guy that sells the revolver will not tell me.

  • @NowWeRoam
    @NowWeRoam27 күн бұрын

    I can't see the backing type of the vinyl playing any kind of roll in whether or not the adhesive remains adhered. They probably mean they went to some type of rubber adhesion instead of contact cement type adhesions. With the heat in Nevada that's going to be a hard one I'd probably think of maybe trying to switch to some type of silicone. That's about all I got. You might be able to get silicone in the tubes and spread it. Just a thought.

  • @CyberhouseStudios
    @CyberhouseStudios27 күн бұрын

    @@NowWeRoam they said to mix 77 and 90. what the guy was explaining is the underside of the actual vinyl wasn't fabric but rubber. the vinyl I have is like a cloth that is in contact with the glue. Maybe he was full of it but that's why I was asking.

  • @NowWeRoam
    @NowWeRoam26 күн бұрын

    Yeah I feel like calling BS on that, most all contact cements 77, 90, 80, and Weldwood all start to fail around 180° fail meaning loss of adhesion, from what I have read. If it is rubber, maybe they are using some type of solvent on the rubber to make it bond to the aluminum.... If mine comes off again,, maybe I'll play with some silicone adhesive see what that does.

    KEY LESSONS LEARNED: First of all, thanks for providing what I could find as the only tutorial of its kind on YT. Pretty straightforward and I appreciate the parts list. Mine came out great....looks like new. I'll pass on a few lessons learned as I made a colossal mistake that should be avoided at all cost. Here we go: 1. Removal of the old vinyl. Use an exacto knife and cut horizontal strips of 6-8 inches in width. It reduces the fight with the bulky vinyl. Use gloves and do it after the truck has sat under the hot sun. Helps soften the glue. 2. HUGE MISTAKE: When you get to the part where you need to slide the cover back a few inches to get to the flap between the bed and the cab, DO NOT remove the rails. I loosened the nuts/bolts that fasten the roll top to the rails so I could slide the cover back a few inches. It didn't budge so in my infinite wisdom, I decided loosen the rail clamps so I could slide the entire assembly back. DID NOT WORK! The rails came crashing down and the slats in the roll top came apart like a jinga puzzle. There is nothing on the internet that tells you how to put humpty back together. My first attempt at reassembly grew the length of the roll top by 6 inches because I didn't interlink the slats properly. After a lot of salty adjectives, a good night's sleep, and a renewed sense of dogged determination, I figured out how to interlink the slats properly and was able to get the cover latched back down at the right length. Made gluing the vinyl much easier. So, yes, leave the roll top on the truck during this project. 3. Gluing on the vinyl. I made sure I covered my truck in painter's plastic tarp to keep the overspray from getting on my paint. Nevertheless, keep some rubbing alcohol on hand to wipe up any unwanted overspray. I also partially backed the bed into my garage to reduce wind effect and to keep bugs and debris out of the glue. I bought this cheap rubber seam roller for $7. It was invaluable to pressing the vinyl snuggly into the glue. www.amazon.com/dp/B07DQG4LCJ?ref=product_details&th=1 4. When the vinyl is dry and you are ready to reattach the rubber flap on either side of the roll top, it is super tricky to get the guide underneath the flap into the channels. Due to the inherent friction of the rubber and plastic grooves, it's difficult to slide it all the way forward without it popping out of the channel. I decided to lube the guide and the channels with a little bit of light machine oil and it made the process much easier. It still required a lot of finesse to work the entire flap into place. Just keep working it forward into the slots, a little at a time, always keeping downward pressure so it doesn't pop out of the channel. 5. Once the flaps were correctly positioned in place, I installed the VHB double-sided tape. I just cut a piece to length and worked it under the inside part if the rubber flap. I used that cheap rubber roller to press everything down and work out any lumps and bubbles I found. FOOTNOTE: When I ran into my trouble, I actually started pricing a new BAK Roll-X2 Revolver as an escape plan. It's currently $1100 on Amazon (as of June 2024). The parts list for this project was just under $100. Mechanically, my 6-year-old roll top is in perfect condition. I'm so glad I didn't have to spend $1100 for a replacement just because of the vinyl. If you avoid the problems I ran into, you're looking at a 4-5 hour job. Less if you have an able-bodied helper. Less, still, if you've done it before. I feel like I did mine twice after my mishap and it went much faster the second time.

    my vinyl is total off my Bak X2 .. I used Gorilla duck tape as a temporary fix.. but after 1yr .. it came off.. I was thinking about buying that vinyl that already had the glue on it. but I know the temperature would melt the adhesive . so I was just going to leave it bare. but now watching your video I have hope.. thank you. my only concern is the rubber you pulled off in the beginning on the sides of the Bakflip was that hard to put back on.? how long did this process take you? Thank you again.

  • @NowWeRoam

    no it's sealed to the top with double sided tape and it's slid in a track from the back to the front, just stick the double sided tape to it off the topper but leave one side of the backing on then put it in the track and slide it up to where it goes then pull the backing off and press it down. Took a couple hours total to get it done, if you have a helper it would go faster on the application of the vinyl

    Had an endurance blow out on me and take out the other two on the same side. 4-years old, ~10k miles, always stored indoors, TPMS, pressures always monitored/maintained. Guess Ameribombs are no better than Chinabombs. I did what I did with all my other trailers, and replaced them with 14-ply G-Rated All Steel tires. Never had a problem after that on any of the trailers. Whatever your trailer comes with, go up at least 2-Ratings and you'll eliminate 99% of your problems. If it came with D-Rated, go to F-Rated, if it came with E-Raged, to to at least G-Rated 14-plys!!!

  • @alexkram
    @alexkram3 ай бұрын

    the 4100 jack has smaller thrust bearing (1/2" x 15/16"), no brake, and it uses a plastic nut on the lead screw as opposed to recirculating balls. I'm wondering if oil or lithium grease would be best to use on the acme screw with plastic nut.

    Didn't see this comment until just now, You're saying the ACME lead screw is nylon or plastic that's inside the leg? If so, that's probably a "DRY" lead screw they do not need lubrication as they provide their own by just regular wear I think. Is the lead screw making noise for you? I know you can pickup new dry lead screws in a few places.
