    Hey, thanks for the video. It was a gateway to getting ours back online. The weird thing is our whirlpool unit has 2 thermostats top and bottom, and 2 elements. Everything checked out on the multi-meter. We pressed the reset button , drained the unit for 20 minutes. When we ran the water again there was a lot of "Black water" from the kitchen sink?? whadda-ya-know! Hot water. We had a brief power outage the night before it was not working. We unit was made in 2014, I had never cleaned / flushed it ever. No issues until this power loss. All is well now. thanks

    Was the water easy to drain?... Asking because Im in a similar situation as you all

  • @PawnShopRockers
    @PawnShopRockers9 ай бұрын

    @@twinkle8217 Hello Twinkle.. Even though the water was easy to drain, it took a LONG time to FULLY drain! Make sure you shut off the power and then disconnect the "wired" connection at the W.H. to be extra safe. DETAILS Here. If the W.H. is in your garage, maybe not a big deal. If it is in a basement or laundry room, like in our case be careful. It took both of us to deal with this mistake of ours. *If you think you have drained it all the water and start to remove the element only to find water coming out of the threads...Stop and keep draining the tub more! There should not be any water coming out of the threads. *We had lots of water flowing out of the tub and needed to protect the floor and hallway from it. Be mindful and have lots of towels available if you do have excess water. *It was nice to have a extra set of hands and feet. Have a good light and take a picture of the area you're working on. It helps with reassembly. *All said and done our "Thermostats" also needed to be replaced. It was still much less money than a new W.H.

    You can change elements without draining the tank. Cut the water supply off and release the pressure valve using a container to catch the HOT overflow. After loosing the element catch the slug of water with a towel.

    Here is the easy method.CUT OFF BREAKER AND VERIFY AT UNIT WITH TESTER. The bottom element in a Rheem comes on first. The upper thermostat cuts it on. Disconnect wires to both elements. Set meter to Ohms. The range is around 12.8. If OR is displayed element is bad. If both elements test good it is the top thermostat usually. Another sign of that is when heating water the top element not the bottom element comes on. You might have hat water for a short time but up to 15 minutes.

    Im in the SE cape on a land locked canal. This is less than 2 miles from us. So sad to see what happened down on the canals with gulf access. You could see how far the water came into downtown Cape Coral by the leaves left on 47th terrace. I've talked with homeowners from this area and my heart goes out to them. My place got about 8k in damage itself but no flooding like this.

    Thank you. You made it easy to follow. One question please. Our water heater heats up but rams out of hot water much sooner than it used to. Can the issue still be the heating element? Appreciate your advise.

    Did it once work fine? Do you have more things running that use hot water? If you always had issues it likely is capacity issue. The tank could be undersize for your needs. If you are running hot showers, washing clothes, and doing dishwasher at same time you will run out of hot water quickly. They do make instant hot water systems which are tankless, but they require more power. Therefore you will need electrician possibly to wire in a circuit for one. They heat water instantly as you run faucet rather than holding hot water.

  • @HOMEDIY

    If the tank isn’t leaking then it likely is a bad element which isn’t keeping up with your hot water needs. That is what we fix in this video.

    I see a technical hubbub comment here. Well I prefer this particular video above all of the technical hubbub videos because this is a simple repair and gets right to the point without a course from Einstein's chalkboard. I just wanted to fix the thing and move on! Not start a career through understanding it completely in and out and why and who and when... Like who cares!.. And I'm not one of those Tool Time living Home Depot hangout kinda guys either. That's why I prefer this simple-ass video above all those technical hubbub videos. You Rock because you kept it simple. Thanks.
