  These pads are at the end of their life. The plastic surface layer started cracking and peeling off the cloth backing. This is why the seam came undone, it wasn't sewed, it was glued pleather surface to pleather surface, and since the plastic coating no longer held to the underlying fabric, there it goes. At this point you definitely want to replace them entirely, because you'll just have plastic flake in your hair and in your ears very soon.
