What radio’s were you using in this video? I’ve recently made a QSO via the ISS Using the same antenna and a couple of cheap baofengs, the front end of these radios are crap and I’m looking to upgrade. I’m a yaesu fan (Ftdx-10)

Icom T8A for receiving and Yaesu FT3D for transmitting. Sometimes use a Baofeng for transmitting, which works fine.

  • @w1frdradio

We were only discussing moon bounce. To do moon bounce takes a lot of power and a long high gain antenna. You transmit and hear your signal return a few seconds later. Not a reliable way of communicating.

I have a question, I'm a new General license holder, I'm looking at the FT 710. But I really like the 991A. I know the 991A has been out since 2016 I think, do you think it would be a good choice in 2024 over the FT 710. I like it for the fact it all in one radio. Thanks 73..KD4OEL

I have both 991a and 710. I like the 991a better. 710 does not really have a good option for an ATU. I had to order a manual tuner for the 710, when the 991a works great with a MAT30. The 710 has great audio, so much so that it is sometimes hard to get noise out. I prefer the sound of the 991a better. That could be due to I have had the 991a for over a year and the 710 a few weeks. Also, the 991a is a shack in a box meaning it also has VHF and UHF. Love that.

I buy the boards from Amazon or AliExpress. Programming is from a webpage and very easy. Setup is from a phone app, also easy. It is just getting some traction in the United States, works best with many nodes spaced through the community. England has got this already.

Try actually calling a call sign to contact, not just repeating your own call sign. You have a better chance of getting a contact when you actially call out someone you hear.
