I'm not sure I understood the stallions' aim. Did they want to hurt the foal or did they want to mate with the mare? Or were they just curious and the mare is instinctively overprotective? I read some comments but I didn't find out the reason of these behaviors

You evidently thought this was interesting enough to film...why not help this good mare to save her baby against the outnumbering males after her and it?

Yes, it appears to me, one of the bachelor males appears to help mare and she accepts his assistance--until her band of horses returns.

This foal was saved by his mother. Others are not so lucky. A vicious wild stallion named 'Lookinglass' actually killed a newborn foal stomping on it and picking it by his teethe and throwing it around making sure the foal was dead.

it is so very fascinating that other mares with foals came to help to protect the new mother and her foal and then stayed - somewhat like elephant females.

Stallions have evolved strategies to safeguard against raising other stallions' offspring. And one of these instincts is to kill young foals - especially males - that are probably not their own, if the opportunity arises.

Some more of the explanation Most people say these stallions tried to kill foal in order to claim the mare and mate with her again, but in horse world, it's more complexed. Bachelors don't actually kill foals, nor the stallions that took over the herd, mares will enter the next heat four to eleven days after birth, in farms people let mare pass first hears before she gets her strength back till she gets to mate. Wild horses well Yea. Noitice that buckskin didn't tried to harm or to instantly mate with her or to do anything to foal, he was calm all the time, even when he got kicked, most stallions don't tolerate the kicks and in fit of rage they kick back, but he didn't, he knew the situation she was in, altough he did succed to sort of claim her, at least he chased off bachelor stallions, not realizing he was helping poor mare, he stood up for her, like her own personal bodyguard, he was patient till other mares came to mother's support, wich he responded well as he wanted to claim another mare, giving the time for THEIR stallion to come and chase off him

What do you expect them to do? You can’t interfere. This is nature, wildlife. The only thing that would happen is the people would get hurt or die, and stress the mare and foal more

A mother’s love and bond with her baby is the most beautiful thing in the world. Human mothers have and will do the same thing- defend their baby at all costs. Mom’s female relatives or female friends whom are mothers themselves will come help both in the animal kingdom and in humanity. Along, with the good males/men who will also protect.

Some people think momma was checking in with the foal when she would touch him with her nose - this is not what she was doing - she was telling him to stay still - stay right here - don’t move - imagine what could have happen if that foal took off running - that would have been a disaster - she needed him to be quiet and still as she took care of business

and another one is my nephews mom was worthless. She was/is a drunk who's in and out of jail constantly. He used to live in a rougher part of town and had some whacked out junkie show up to his house. He had my nephew hide while and took care of him until police arrived (luckily junkie didnt haveva gun). My brothers wife cheated on him and had a kid with some other dude, and eventually when she was in jail AGAIN he saw that the kid did not have a stable home and took him in and now hes going to a grest school system and will be a HS senior next year. Maybe its then men who youre around...maybe its a YOU thing if everyone else isnt "sht"
