Hobby Hoarder

Hi, my name is Denis and I'm a hobby hoarder.

I do 3D printing, aviation, electronics, woodworking, cycling, photography, calligraphy, game dev, filmmaking, board games and who knows what else. Life's too short for just one hobby!

Check the links below to get in touch with me!

⬣ Quality over quantity ⬣
I'm trying to upload a video every few weeks, but if it takes me 2 months to finish (probably because I'm doing 5 other things as well), then it will simply take 2 months. Forcing myself to make a video every week, no matter what, only promotes shallow content.

⬣ Sponsored videos ⬣
You'll never have to listen about what to use to create your new web page, or which VPN is the best. I hate those fake inserts as much as you do.

⬣ Reviews policy ⬣
I will only do reviews of products that I have purchased privately with my own money. This is the only way to offer unbiased and trustworthy opinion. Only by buying something and using it for a long time can I stand behind my words.

    I've been gifted a 30W cheap pen to pyrograpghy pen to use - with no instructions - do you have to let it heat up first?

  • @HobbyHoarder
    @HobbyHoarder5 күн бұрын

    Even cheap ones usually heat up quite fast since the tip is so small. Leave it for a few minutes and it should be good to go. The only thing to keep in mind is that you might have to work slower - if you go too fast, it can't heat up the tip quickly enough.

    I have this weird issue where the filament clogs in the bottom end of the heat sink (the part that is screwed in the heating element). It follows the general pattern for heat creep (first few lines are normal, then clogging sets in). Sometimes I can print an entire temp tower, albeit very brittle (so some clogging is in effect). Other times, nothing. My IR camera shows no heat leakage to to heat sink (only a cool 60°C, without the cover and fan). I do not understand why filament would clog in the heating element. It melts in there just fine. Creality's customer support is totally useless.

    Everything is biodegradable, even uranium, given enough time. So when they claim something is biodegradable without specifying a timeframe, take it with a grain of salt, it's a generic term that can be used and abused for any product. Most people confuse 'biodegradable' with 'compostable.' The EU compostable label means that the product must break down within 12 weeks when buried in moist soil. "EN 13432 requires compostable plastics to disintegrate after 12 weeks and completely biodegrade after six months, meaning that 90% or more of the plastic material will have been converted to CO2."

    What is a proper retraction setting for an Ender 3 to avoid clogs? I’m having A LOT of clogs lately. Thanks in advance!

  • @HobbyHoarder
    @HobbyHoarder3 ай бұрын

    There are various Ender 3 versions, but it you have the one with bowden extruder, I'd start with 5mm and go from there. For direct drive, 0.5mm is a good start. If it was working ok before, I'd try a different filament brand first, it might be just as simple as that. You could try printing a stringing test/tower with different retraction settings, that should get you really close.

    The PEI sheet on your Ender should work really well. Clean it with iso alcohol or soapy water, maybe it's simply too greasy. If that doesn't work, you probably need to get your nozzle even closer.

    Hi yesterday I started my first try with a cheap stuff and what I noticed is that the metal "pencil" if I can name it so it's much longer than yours on the video so not easy to make something with details. Also what I used for wood was a cut wood for the kitchen and believe me wasn't that easy. I had to stay 10" - 12" to the same point to get my burning mark and not always perfect. I had the feeling or the wood wasn't good or the cut burning machine wasn't good...really I don't Know but I was disappointed and not happy with the results. Do you have an idea why this happend???

  • @HobbyHoarder
    @HobbyHoarder5 ай бұрын

    I'm sorry to hear that. I'm guessing the wood was too hard. From my experience, soft woods work much better because they burn at lower temperatures. See if you can get some scrap plywood, my hardware store usually has some for free or very cheap. Only if that doesn't work would I consider changing the burning tool. Some simply don't heat up enough. One last thing to keep in mind - you have to regulary clean the tip as you're working, otherwise it will collect soot and won't be able to give off enough heat. I hope that helps!

    Hi there. Glazier who has been in the industry for about 10 years now. Clear glass and mirrors are made out of the exact same materials, the only difference is that the mirror has a reflective surface called silvering applied to one side of it. In the video shown, you are still using the glass side.

  • @HobbyHoarder
    @HobbyHoarder5 ай бұрын

    Yes, you're right, thank you for the comment. When I made the video, I wasn't aware of that yet, but found out later. I personally prefer PEI sheets over glass now, I've had much better results with it.

    @@HobbyHoarder I just ordered one of the high temp engineering plates from bamboo labs, I have been using almost exclusively PEI sheets. I have had quite a bit of trouble tuning my P1P with polymax pla filament using the PEI sheet, I keep getting a k-factor of 0.058. That just seems way too high to me. At k-.021 my edges look a lot better but the seams still look like they’re not connecting properly. My theory is the textured pei sheet was screwing me up, but even with a calibration tower I still get .058. Any ideas?

    What is with people disabling steppers?! That's the worst advice ever when trying to level your bed. The point of leveling the bed is to make sure get the bed flat so that it is the same distance from the nozzle at all points. If your disable the steppers and start moving shit by hand you're gonna end up moving your z axis completely screwing up your level

  • @HobbyHoarder
    @HobbyHoarder6 ай бұрын

    If you're doing manual bed leveling, then you have to disable the steppers so that you can move the hotend around and adjust each corner. This, of course, is not done with auto bed leveling.

    There is more than one way to do something, but you think most 3D printer owners don't know how or when to change the nozzle properly. Most 3D printer owners are smarter than you may think, considering that the ones who are doing this as a hobby, side work or income, view it as an investment. The condescending tones of this video are startling. Thanks!

  • @HobbyHoarder
    @HobbyHoarder6 ай бұрын

    It was never meant to be condescending. As you say, many people learn by themselves, as did I. Then I thought why not make a video about it so that not everyone has to go through the entire learning process. I didn't know a lot of these stuff when I've gotten my first printer and other videos helped me learn a lot. This video was just a continuation of that. I'm sorry to hear it came across differently for you.
