Thank you for sharing this with us. Landing there on June 30 1997 was sooo exciting. I recall banking heavily between apartment blocks. I looked out my (right side) window to peer into the eyes of a mum who was washing up a plate at the sink. The span between us was only about 50 metres. I can still clearly visualize the moment in my memory. I love Hong Kong! Australia

Student pilot here, shouldn’t the pilot requesting VFR on top switch to the VFR semi-circular cruising altitude rule? Meaning he should’ve chosen 21.500 feet? Or was this not in place at the time? Also is flying IFR outside of designated ATS routes allowed? And is every ATS route controlled airspace?

How’s she handle Captain? Well she’s a little slow on the controls but a lot of it is all these guys hanging on the wing with windshields spoiling the wing slipstream. But overall I think a green light for production. I had to reverse control her because they cabled her backwards but they will work out that bugaboo .

Well done this video, old school. Note the KLM simulator! A maintenance fiasco it was , originally built as a 747-200 sim and later modified to -300 updates. Frequent breaks during a sim session to re boot. The approach required good preparation. Especially after a long flight you really had to be on your toes with fatigue. Tailwind on base could really mess things up and thermal activity. But really just came down to pure handling skills . Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

One of my favorite movies of all time! That being said, now that I look at some the many clips available on YT, it strikes me that a bunch of bone-tired, hungry old men hanging on by the strength of their hands for any length of time is about as realistic as my knocking out Mike Tyson. That first bump when the pane hit the sand before going up again probably would have shaken loose most of the men.... I STILL love this movie, don't get me wrong.

I lived on an island called Cheung Chou. It was the first landmark that the pilots had to seek. Once the found the island, the had to look straight to find the Green Island with a light house. When the reached the light house, they had to break left hard to find the checker board. When they saw the board, they had to break hard right, then they would see the runway.

When they made movies. Fantastic movie. All Hollywood does today is make horrible remakes of the same films over and over again
@johncantwell82162 ай бұрын
That's because there is no one around today who knows how to write. People have almost zero attention span due to their living on smart devices. Also, Hollywood is not going to risk hundreds of millions of dollars making a picture unless it is according to a formula which a group of investors believes will guarantee huge profits.

I've always wondered whenever I see this movie that they dared the extra weight & loss of aerodynamics with the men on the wings. If it were me, I would have probably went with only two men and take very careful note of my position, then send help back ASAP. Be that as I may, I really like this movie and watch at least parts of it any time it airs.

FWIW, I believe the checkerboard as a visual approach cue was in use at least as early as the early 1960s. I have a BOAC booklet "Flying the Boeing 707" from the early 60's (at least) that showed the checkerboard in use then.

Didn't anybody else question, why they are wearing thick jackets in the desert. I live in the Southeast U.S., it's not but nowhere near as a desert, and I wouldn't be caught dead in a jacket... you'd boil. In fact, in the summer time you're reduced down to running about in your swimwear indoors. Pictures of the American GI's fighting in Vietnam also show them stripped down to the bare minimum...

@choppergirl3 ай бұрын
@@frankferrara8435 I almost was. I took a Greyhound bus from San Fransciso to Georgia, along the way I saw I could jump off, take a 30 mile side bus up to the Grand Canyon, and did that. Hike down into it, and the sun was going down, so I was like, what am I going to do. I could of slept on the desert ground using my tennis shoe as a pillow, or in an emergency, found shelter in a porta potty down there in the middle of nowhere. I thought about it and realized, I had no idea how cold it got at night, I was out of my native environment, who knows, maybe the sand didn't retain much heat and the temperatures plummeted, so I decided if that turned out to be the case, I did not want to spend the night trying to survive in a stinking porta potty (which I never went into)... so I decided to hike all the way out. Passed a mountain goat and several other tourists on the way back up, caught the bus, and went on to Georgia. Resolved never to take a bus again, and pay the extra for a plane ticket! On the plus side, on one of the legs of the journey, the bus was full, so I had to sit on the front steps, which I actually enjoyed since I got to see everything and talk to the bus driver, and they gave me a partial refund... so the entire trip only cost me $60 from Oregon to San Francisco to Georgia. And that's my "Never slept in a desert" story...
