David Hopper - W4STJ

Retired from the commercial two-way radio business and now still tinker around with other project plus helping out occasionally at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center with their crash tests. Data retrieved from post crash analysis is used in their crash reconstruction courses. See Truman Boyle's KZread channel for more crashes.

Videos here are from some of those crashes plus odds and ends of all sorts. I'm no professional but I do have fun so enjoy!

Great prank. Am Ex EMT/SAR.... Please no matter how tired you are NEVER put feet up like that! Easy way to turn even a usually survivable accident into a fatal one. Don't want to be to graphic but likely outcomes are fractured femurs, fractured pelvis... Air bag will deploy and send your knees into your face at high speed. Stay safe.

  • @W4STJ

Not meant as a prank but it was part of a staged crash for accident reconstruction classes. I added the dummy for effect to show what might happen. I think a few folks have changed their minds about doing this..

@@Marc816yep and for about 5 years or so before airbags became standard equipment in all vehicles, in the late 1980s and early 90s, we had automatic seat belts in cars that didn't have airbags. In most such cars, commonly found in some Fords/Mercury, a few Crystler makes, and many foreign brands like Nissan, Toyota, Honda and Mazda, the shoulder belt ran along a track and fastened the shoulder belt around you when the door was closed or the ignition key turned, and the lap belt was separate and intended to be fastened manually to form a three point belt. Shortly after this feature made its way into many makes and models, it was found to create a false sense of security, as many folks felt safe with just the shoulder belt around them and neglected the lap belt, and during a collision slid underneath the shoulder belt and suffered severe or fatal injuries, including decapitation. In many GM models from 1988- 1993, the belt retractors were mounted in the front doors, and the "buckle " was intended only as an emergency release. You were to shimmy under the belts and upon closing the door, you are securely belted in. ( my first car, a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird convertible while attending a 2 year community College 11 years ago with these door mounted belts, no airbags, and this was sort of how it was explained in the owner's manual) The problem with these cars was that in a collision that caused the door to fly open, not an uncommon occurrence, the occupant can be pulled out of the vehicle and suffer a serious injury or much worse.

My dad was a cop for 42 years and he always said not to sit like ever since my brother and I were kids. He's seen quite a few minor accidents that everyone would be walking away except the people who had there feet on the dash. Broken legs, broken hips, broken pelvic bones. It's not worth it, it's the airbag that does the damage in the small accidents.
