Cowboys trusted that snakes could not slither from the outside to the inside of a horsehair rope, not slither from the inside where the cowboy was sleeping to the outside.

I think the idea is that the snake will not crawl “into the circle” not “out” of it.

They don't cross the rope because they don't want anything to do with you. Rattlesnakes aren't out there hunting people.

It’s wild how much nonsense folks got away with in the 80s and 90s The whole “death touch”, being able to defeat a man with one finger, having over 300 KOs in a single kumite tournament. People were really lying and exaggerating the truth and no one was really challenging that. lol!

Might have been a smell in some cowboys rope. Snakes are repelled by certain things , like onions , and vinegar.

They tested the snakes leaving the circle not entering. They may decide to go around given the option. Just saying...🤷😉

There's a difference between snakes on the outside going in and snakes inside wanting out, those snakes were getting the heck out of there, could care less about the rope or anything. I've seen snakes dodge a loop of rope at the farm, no big mystery really, at least to us it wasn't. We did use a longer rope and wrapped 2 laps around, doubling the circle. The snake's not afraid of the rope, it's just an obstacle it goes around because it's not sensing any food or anything of interest within the barrier, put a mouse or warm egg within the loop, it'll cross it. It also had to be a circle, not square or any shape with corners so the snake can sense an easy route for moving forward.

Heck yeah I remember this show. Man we, my brothers and I, were all pretty small when we watched it and I know I really liked it. We was watching it pretty regularly and suddenly it was, for us anyway, off the air. Now it may have switched to a later show time but whatever happened it was there and then it wasn't. This is a different guy emceeing it, the other guy had a big face and a cool voice, that I can recall. Was a great show!

Smoke or soak the rope with sulfur. The rotten egg smell goes away, but the snake will still be repulsed. I learned this from my grand mother. She had a length of rope at all entrances. Was grandma correct? I have confidence she knew the old tricks.
