A channel focused on video gaming, with a strong focus on Atari, but I enjoy games from Nintendo, Sega, the ol' MS-DOS days and more. Yes, I own an operate a real arcade business, so some videos might be filmed there.

    Nice table! I was expecting early 8-bit graphics or rasters... although possibly generated by a CTIA/GTIA and a POKEY... but this is somehow better! 🍻

    BTW, there’s a darned good selection of tables from Amiga, Genesis, and others on AntStream Arcade, if you run that on your Atari VCS. I really wish they would “advertise,” in some way, on VCS and other retro gaming sites, for the other platforms it supports. Giant tiny app with which I have no monetary relationship, except as a subscriber. Mos def worth it, but to be fair, I have no idea what it really costs. When I subbed, they only charged me $16.95 for a year, using the URL on the card that comes with the VCS. I dunno if there were a sale, or not, but I’d definitely renew for a decade, righ’now, if they could promise they’d be around long enough to fulfill it...

    Great analysis! I think some things were really hard to fix, like the 64 bit spec. It actually had a 64 bit bus and Tom and Jerry could use it. But many titles (like Trevor McFur or Club Drive) looked 16 bit AF. They had to do ... _something_. On the other hand, you're completely right that Atari should have just have had much closer relations to users and developers. Many devs complained it was the worst documented console system. There wasn't even a ```printf()``` for them to use. Also fully agreed on having big names on board. But Atari were doing the TOS series just 1 year ago, and their focus was on making good hardware for a low price.. of all kinds.. There was no focus. Also great points about the pre launch and launch phase.

    Thanks for this! I had the Pro system joysticks. Suffice to say, "The Arcade" was _a lot_ better. Read about the 7800, but it seemed really tough to code. Like you say.. The XEGS was silly. Atari did so many crazy pivots that lead nowhere. Even before Tramiel came along. That Ricky and Vicky game looks awesome.

    Wow! I didn't know about these plans! The 65816 isn't a bad CPU, but it's no 68000. For the MHz it's pretty fast, though. The screen "rotation" stuff was pretty nice. Reminds me of the Megadrive's vertical offset for it's tiling? It still baffles me how many crazy pivots they did between 87 and 93. The ATW is perhaps the most crazy one. It actually did work, and was great. The problem was that there weren't too many companies around wanting to install supercomputers.. Especially not from companies that formerly did games exclusively.

    Not bad at all. I think if the object design would have been cooler it would have appealed to starfox fans. But technically this is solid.

  • @earx23

    Looks like a direct successor in architecture. The problem is that this functional parallelism design is pretty difficult to program. Without a proper library, they'd have serious problems pushing it. Even with the Jaguar 1 Atari messed that up. They only had a small inner circle of developers, and the rest didn't get any support. It's good they added texture mapping, and if they could bake the silicon without that jump bug so that the processors can run code from external RAM.. The PS1 had 1 CPU which, even without data cache, and only a scratch pad, made it a lot easier to use than jag.. The Jag2's GPU seems easy to use, though, with its cache. IMHO, the 68k host processor was silly. The 020 is better because its instruction cache avoids RAM congestion. But still.. it was added because it was a well known CPU.. but it's a completely underpowered CPU compared to the GPU, which runs a RISC core, and can do all the general processing you want.. The Jag was a weird design.

    AFAIK, the specs did say that they were supposed to address the jump bug that the original Jag had, as well as give it a better library (including C++ support). Seems like it is the kind of hardware that the system should've had from the get go.

    I always try to beat the Queen without running away from the room (honorable fight), yet she get's me every time. Apparently it's a glitch that she won't leave the room. Another glitch if you save while in the room and reload, the Queen will be frozen until you cross the entrance again.

    This is simply ripping off Gex Trilogy including the same trailer joke reused but done slightly different. I am rather curious who asked for this as well as Plumbers Don't Wear Ties? Everyone knows Sparkster and Gex got the better compilations. Not only that, I'm starting to think as ridiculous this idea may seem. They might even possibly bring Awesome Possum back!!! I don't wanna live on this planet anymore lol. Seriously why Bubsy is a question that bags too many questions with too little answers because most of us could care less about this. At least, Gex is kinda funny in way more interesting platformer games.

    All of the bubsy games were complete rubbish. What the hell are they thinking? Zool was a better series (apart from what the 3d version became).... Atari could have funded an indie house to create some enjoyable platform games based on an existing IP (ok, they are, but still)... Why are they wasting money on a rightly forgettable series of games? F*ck's sake Atari, will you never learn?

  • @iratanongrata5973
    @iratanongrata5973Ай бұрын

    Gotta get that money back somehow, I guess (and this is probably the 'low hanging fruit' way of doing so) - although I agree that starting fresh from the group-up on this character would be the way to go.

  • @grinbrothers
    @grinbrothersАй бұрын

    Of all the platform mascots of the 90's to continue to 'thrive', it's surprising to see Bubsy be one of them. Not only is he getting this collection but he got a couple new games in the previous gen. 1:06 - I had actually forgotten about the Atari purchase of Bubsy (here I thought you were covering this just because you were a Bubsy fan). I wonder if this is to build up to yet another new Bubsy game. 2:10 - Feels a bit strange to be targeting a nostalgic audience with a digital only release. I feel this sort of demographic are they type that physical releases particularly appeal too. I wonder if this collection could make it's way to Evercade as a physical release? 4:03 - So will this be all four 'classic era' Bubsy along with the handheld variants? That's pretty solid coverage then. 5:00 - I could understand development issues with the floaty physics but how did they never address the ease of death factor back then? Seems like it was an obvious problem to address by just adding hit points/removing fall damage. 6:24 - To my surprise, the Jaguar Bubsy is an original and presently exclusive game. It does take more inspiration from the first game in the series than the sequel though.

  • @iratanongrata5973
    @iratanongrata5973Ай бұрын

    Yeah, that should be my main criticism of the title - it's way too easy to die and the collision feels super loose. I don't think I've ever completed the first level to this game, which generally is a tell that it sucks

    @@iratanongrata5973 I remember the British gaming scene of the microcomputers had a mentality of difficult = quality back; perhaps it popped up in other studios in other regions. It does seem strange for a family friendly platform mascot to be so brutal though, and with no arcade connections as well.

    No, remember when you get the vine in the first Pitfall and he does the Tarzan yell? Sure there was Jungle King with the blatant rip-off of Tarzan, which is kind of amusing in retrospect, but given what Coleco was trying to do (per the article, have their own version of Pitfall), that's where I'm a little surprised.

    The secret to the falling boulders screen is that you will notice the boulders bounce off the ledges when they hit and don't fall straight through them. So, line yourself up under them as you make you way higher. If you get yourself under the ledge that is highest on the screen, you can climb up without any issue. And, it seems that once Tarzan is just past that point near the top, the boulders actually seem to stop coming down at that point so you can climb the rest of the way onto the next screen without issue.

    I was wondering about that myself when i was watching 7of7 playing it real early this AM and i got to see some of the "temple" stage and how it played a bit, and i thought while watching i wondered if the ledges blocked the boulders as the player didnt utilize them, he really didnt even fo near them, so my theory wasnt proven at all, as i personally didn't see any boulder deflecting off a ledge. Ps: but i did finally see it in this play here. Thats cool.
