Funny thing is that Cancellara and the other 4 were already standing up pushing to create a gap and when they sit it is the moment when Cancellara suddenly changed the pacing and accelerated drastically. It makes no sense.
@barrymiller338527 күн бұрын
We will never know the truth of this. But, to me, it does not look like a natural (unassisted) acceleration. He gains a huge advantage seemingly without a huge effort.

It used to be like that. But somehow the Tour direction knew Ulrich would be banned. And the 3rd one (Vinokourov?) and so on, as everyone was doped. However if the 2nd or 3rd would have been French, they would have passed it on immediately. I remember that when the news came out, the french tv invited Richard Virenque. Literally God in France, but the bloke was drugged up to his eyeballs, and was even fired from his team for doping. But ey, it waz a frenz cycliste!

Translation of the (legendary) Flemish commentary. Karl Vannieuwkerke: [Sylvain] Chavanel. Michel Wuyts: [Leif] Hoste. [Björn] Leukemans must give it a thought as well. That wind, man. It's destroying us. It's off, since you need a tug here at the front. Boonen straightens up. A bit of a strange moment in the chasing group. Weigh things up a bit. 'Shall we or shall we not'? Karl Vannieuwkerke: Great timing from Leukemans and Hoste. Believe me. Michel Wuyts: [Jürgen] Roelandts on the weel. Another rider from AG2R who will serve as a jammer [for Sébastien Hinault who's in the front]. There's still 50 kilometers to go. Stijn Vandenbergh, [Filippo] Pozzato's right hand man. [Bernhard] Eisel still has a teammate as well. That is [Adam] Hansen, but of course he has already given a lot in that breakaway. [short silence, Cancellara attacks] Michel Wuyts: Cancellara. Cancellara in his stocking feet at a time when Boonen was dozing off a little bit in the back, Cancellara steams off like a steam train! Look at that rotational rhythm. Ooolalalalaah!!! [a pun on Boonen's residence] Balen, we have a problem! Karl Vannieuwkerke: Tom, Tom, Tom. Switch on your TomTom device and go! It's the time for it, lad. 'Cause if Cancellara joins Hoste and Leukemans, they will be eager to help him. Michel Wuyts: And then all you can do is curse, right? How well did he [Cancellara] see that? Balen, we have a problem! Karl Vannieuwkerke: [sardonic laughter] Now what? Now what? (bis) Michel Wuyts: He [Boonen] has to now. But he gets a bunch of riders on his wheel instantly. Karl Vannieuwkerke: He better not wait too long. Michel Wuyts: That way you destroy yourself. He [Boonen] gets a teammate of Hoste on his wheel right away. Cancellara's almost in front. There, between the motorcycles. Karl Vannieuwkerke: We're going to start that cobbled stretch of Mons and Pévèle. We just came from that stretch of Bersée in the village of Mons en Pévèle, now the cobbles of Mons en Pévèle. Michel Wuyts: Now I'm curious what [Thor] Hushovd and [Roger] Hammond are doing. And Pozzato. In principle, they must now also enter into an alliance. [Boonen's group turns up Mons en Pévèle] Michel Wuyts: Surely it's going to depend on this strip of cobblestones now, isn't it? Boonen knows that. Karl Vannieuwkerke: Cancellara is already there as Hoste accelerates. He [Hoste] makes a sign with his elbow, but no one is in his wheel. Find your own route on those cobblestones and just think of yourself. Cancellara is there, so we have four race leaders. Michel Wuyts: In a totally different way than those two previous [cobbled stretches]. Boonen now full, full, full, full [throttle]. Full with the initiative on his shoulders, though. Karl Vannieuwkerke: Now, that effort that he [Boonen] puts in has also been made by Cancellara. Michel Wuyts: He [Cancellara] takes over. Leukemans... Karl Vannieuwkerke: Leukemans has to crawl between his bike frame to follow Cancellara's pace. Wow, just wow. Michel Wuyts: Still 47 kilometers to go. The Swiss is not afraid of anything. This is purely with the mind. Like a cunning fox. He escapes [from the grupetto] the moment Boonen was stretching. Karl Vannieuwkerke: Yes, but I would also like to have that much power. Then I would also like to use my brain, you know. Michel Wuyts: Boonen with Hushovd, [Juan Antonio] Flecha and Pozzato. Karl Vannieuwkerke: The same names all over. Michel Wuyts: Again, four greats [of cycling]. Will they take over [from Boonen]? Or is that not necessary here? And what is the time difference? Give us a helicopter view. He [Cancellara] gets rid of them [Leif Hoste, Sébastien Hinault and Björn Leukemans]. He wants to get rid of them already. He wants to conjure up a solo like [Johan] Museeuw [in 2000 and 2002]. Leukemans is strong, though. Leukemans is damn strong. Karl Vannieuwkerke: Very strong. Hoste drops out. Leukemans breaks, but does not crack completely. Come on, Björn. On the cobblestones you can safely ride ten centimeters from the wheel. I know it's dangerous, but there's no other solution with this Cancellara. There really is no other solution. You need his broad back to hide behind. Michel Wuyts: It's a horror. It's a horror (bis). You know you can't let that meter grow to two meters. And that you have to stick to that wheel. You feel yourself breaking down. But that's not allowed, huh? That's not allowed, right (bis)? You have to bite the bullet. And for him [Boonen]? The same. Without fear. Look at that wind coming from the front right. Leukemans sticks his nose to his own front wheel but he refuses to succumb. I don't think Cancellara is even that upset about it, you know. He has someone in his wake and will probably get help from him later. But that someone is already shaking his head. Karl Vannieuwkerke: He [Leukemans] says: 'I'm not going to take over'. 'I can not'. 'I'm at the end of my powers'. Michel Wuyts: Through that bend. Through that bend (bis). Another moment where you have to pull up. Where you need full power. Look at that rotational rhythm, at what a fantastic job he does. He has a lead of 17 seconds. Karl Vannieuwkerke: They tick away, those seconds. First there were ten, now there are seventeen. And Boonen has to do the job all by himself. Michel Wuyts: He [Boonen] goes very far out of the corner and he misses the ideal line he took last year. Karl Vannieuwkerke: Leukemans drops out. Leukemans drops out (bis). Michel Wuyts: Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. It's all over from here. If you park now, the story is written. There goes the tank. There goes the steamroller. What now, lads? Now what? Now what (bis)? Karl Vannieuwkerke: [mentions first ever Swiss winner of Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix in one season, in 1923] Heiri Suter. 1923. Another 46 kilometers. 21 seconds. I think that Suter is already turning in his grave. Michel Wuyts: Good tactics from Saxo Bank. Karl Vannieuwkerke: It's a one-man crew. It's a one-man crew at the moment. Michel Wuyts: What are you doing about it, huh? Collaborate? Karl Vannieuwkerke: 19 [seconds]. Two away. Michel Wuyts: Don't give up just yet. Karl Vannieuwkerke: Anyway, will he [Cancellara] be able to be strong against all those riders [chasing]? And Leukemans gets angry at that motorcycle. Michel Wuyts: It does cost him that position at the front, you know. Karl Vannieuwkerke: He's got his own motorcycle riding ahead of him, hasn't he? Cancellara. Stay on his wheel. It's that simple. Not. Am I right, Björn? Michel Wuyts: Boonen can't no more. He now picks up Hoste and Hinault. 19 seconds. It remains a battle between the big two. Karl Vannieuwkerke: They are strong men together. When they get on those intermediate strips, they come off those cobblestones and start developing pace together then he will still suffer. Michel Wuyts: 'He's not going to drop me', Boonen said. Karl Vannieuwkerke: He didn't either. He surprised him. Michel Wuyts: Except for that doze-off moment. Well, he's not there yet. He's not there yet (bis). He sees that he's alone. He has to complete 45 kilometers against the wind. But he has already shown so much that was unlikely. [end of video]
