    Late to the party, but I agree that the AOT dub is horrible to me as well. You're not alone. I only watch subbed anime so it could be bias, but I also watched Black Lagoon in sub first (twice even) and then watched it in dub, and I like them both equally. Imo the Black Lagoon dub is better for comedy/cussing, while the sub is better for the emotion/more accurate line delivery (which helps me understand the characters on a deeper level). Glad you decided to react to both.

    Good stuff. Some context: * Something that gets culturally lost in translation for the Kazama flashback: there's a scene of child-Kazama getting really excited about Udon while the other kids demand fancier food. What's implied is that his family/mother is poor and couldn't afford to give him what kids his age want, and he was so aware/considerate of that that he put the burden on his own shoulders and pretended like he wanted the more affordable item on the menu instead, for their sake. An early sign of him living his life for other people and out of duty/responsibility instead of for himself. * My interpretation of where everyone ends up is that it's commentary on what attitudes lead to and sustain greatness in competitive fields. Kong and Peco are the ones who have always had true passion for the sport/winning, and over the course of the show, learned the other side of it that's needed too-- They were never going to stop. Meanwhile, guys like Smile and Kazama have an attitude/nature that was never going to get them far competitively, without making them miserable. Ultimately, Smile's journey was not about becoming convinced that he should care as much about winning as everyone else, which is an easy bad assumption early on-- He just ends up having a healthier/happier/less frustrated and judgmental version of the same attitude he always had about the sport. Koizumi wanted him to see the view from the top (due to his own regrets), but honestly, what he hoped would happen wasn't really what was right for him, and Obaba seemed to know it all along. Kong's character definitely had my heart the most (and Sakuma kind of an understated/unexpected MVP), but it's really a show with five shared main characters. It starts out seeming like it's mostly about Smile, but by the end, not really. It's about every different dimension that the five characters represented pretty equally.

    I have just watched Stanley Kubrick's Strangelove movie and noticed that the music at the end of this episode in Black lagoon is originally from this movie. Good stuff. Thoughts/clarifications: * Kazama is Yuri's cousin, which is odd, but I guess less frowned upon in that culture. However, the guy doing something questionable to her poster was not Kazama/her cousin, it was Sanada-- He's got a very..... questionable mentality. * Kazama's backstory is very cryptic-- the result of it is directly told, but what happened to his family has to be pieced together and interpreted. More on that when more is shown. * Peco's tragic mentality was hinted at earlier, but it's subtle. After he was beaten by Kong in the first episode, his first thought was "maybe I should quit", Smile affirms it, he hesitantly responds "Yeah..... no reason to force myself," and there's this powerful silent dolley shot of his back that communicates the lost/hopeless fear in him, before he immediately starts talking about the upcoming tournament again. It's clear that he loves Ping Pong/winning and takes defeat harder than anyone, but also can't let go of it. * Character motivations are a lot more clear after these episodes, where they initially may have been confusing (especially Smile). Peco plays Ping Pong out of a genuine desire/dream to be the best, Kazama plays it out of joyless responsibility/necessity (putting the reputation of his entire family name on his back), Smile (also pretty joylessly) plays it because it's the only thing he has in his life (on top of giving him a father figure in Koizumi), Kong is learning that there's more to life than Ping Pong, and Sakuma needed perspective. * That Christmas montage is so good. I love the recurring bit with the random tertiary character who lost to Smile and is now wandering the earth looking for purpose in his life.

    Haha yess afterwards while editing I noticed the eyebrows 😅 so Yuri's love for Kazama is one-sided. These two episodes were definitely my favorite so far! it's a little late but 32:41 mentions about Pyrrhic victory. It's a kind of success that you would be exhausted and lose your recover strength in the end. it's origin is from King of Tarentum Pyyrus. He defeats Romans in many battles but suffers casualty. At last, his strength is finished and lose the war once and for all. So, it is the etymology of this term and reflects Rock's mental situation at the end of arc.

  • @richardkhchang
    @richardkhchangАй бұрын

    Good stuff. One thing that you can see at this point is that all of these characters are like different combinations of attitudes and dispositions that you find in any competition/walk of life: it's like a Venn diagram between having or not having natural talent, dedication/willingness to work for it, passion/interest, positive/negative influence on others, work/life balance, and different reasons for playing/not playing (some of these haven't been revealed or hinted at yet). And every time any two characters pair up, you can see those similarities and differences more and more clearly. And a lot of times, the things that make someone good in some way are also what makes them bad in another way. I really like how it's a more brutal, realistic, and relatable take on things. No character is just "evil" or a throwaway plot device, downright everyone has unique substance that gets explored, and it's not just one ultra passionate protagonist who proves they can accomplish anything simply by wanting it hard enough. Hell, many of the characters that you would initially expect to be villains are actually more likeable than Smile is, and arguably are no less important to the story.

    i know it's out of context but I definitely recommend you Drifters written by Kouta Hirano. actually i don't know that it suits your taste but it's definitely one of the my favorite manga/anime. so, i want to suggest it to you. it is isekai anime that includes many historical figures not just from Japan but almost all over the world and ages. Especially, the character of Oda Nobunaga was a perfect. However, i need to warn you because it has "a bit" savage and bloody scenes. if you have watched Hellsing before, you definitely know what i mean. A last thing, Drifters' ending music Vermillion is a masterpiece as well.

    @@kyokyoreacts i mean there are some disturbing scenes that you don't like but actually when i rethink, black lagoon also has this kinds of things beyond action moments. By the way, to understand completely the all allusions in Drifters, i have read a brief history of Japan. you don't need to do, of course. But it actually helped me to notice some parallels in one of the last popular series, Shogun, too. in series, Toranaga matches with Tokugawa in real history, in series Taiko is the same person with Hideyoshi etc. even though much more less than Drifters, in the Black lagoon, Rei Hiroe use some facts as well. For instance, you may remember in the vampire twins arc, it is stated that a dictator prohibited the abortion to provide much more labor but it didn't say the who was this man. It's actually Ceaușescu and he really did it in real life. Hiroe Rei knew this info and used it to increase effect of the anime on audience and i guess he succeed. In my perspective, it's the best arc of the Black lagoon. Some people can claim that Yukio or Roberta's blood trial is the best arc, Yukio's arc can be perhaps but Roberta is a fake terminator figure to me and find her exaggerated. And Garcia and the little maid is annoying rats to me in this arc. Except some confrontations between revy and rock, this arc is not much necessary to me.

    Clarification: Kaio is the name of the school. Kazama and Sakuma are the name of the two characters from that school. Bit of context that isn't obvious: The characters' play-styles often reflect their true nature and attitudes to life. Smile is a "chopper", which is a purely conservative/defensive/reactive style where you stay back and wait for the opponent to make a mistake or run out of gas (that's why everyone's surprised when he switched to an attacker style before the Kong match), while Peco is an "attacker", which is a straightforward, aggressive and instinctive style where you dictate the play (specifically, Kong said that he plays sloppy and leaves himself wide open). Some food for thought: Viewers automatically leap to winning = good in a sports anime, and want Smile to keep doing what gives him success, but there's a bit of ambiguity here-- the only way he's able to meet Koizumi's challenge is not by coming to a healthy conclusion or finding real passion in what he's doing, but instead he's adapted to what's being asked of him by shutting off his emotions and not caring about anything/becoming a robot (aka. exactly how he has passively dealt with his problems in the past, by retreating into a shell). The metaphor's a bit troubling/tragic, if you think about it.

    Yeah... F*** GRIFFITH! First he gets upset because his boytoy becomes a man and doesn't want to be his boytoy anymore. Then like the soyboy he is, Griffith decides to be extremely rash and have a little fun. Even worse, it looked like he stayed the whole night instead of yeeting out of there instantly, like an amateur. Oh, but yeah he'll place the blame on Guts instead of realizing that he screwed himself. I mean without Guts, Griffith wouldn't have been in as good of a position as was in since Guts kind of carried his army at times, while Griffith reaped the rewards. This was well displayed by the gap that was created between Griffith and Guts in martial skill, when only 3 years prior they were near-equals with a slight advantage to Griffith. I only just started reading the manga but hopefully Griffith gets his just desserts. Side note: I think that Guts' and Casca's relationship was kind-of toxic. I don't know if this is a hot take, but it felt like when you get with someone who just broke up with their ex but they still have feelings for them. I know some people say that Casca just saw Griffith as a leader, but it definitely seemed like there was significant romantic investment on Casca's part. Thus, when Griffith displayed some semblance of interest by jumping on top of her in his initial broken state, Casca immediately was like "Ehh I can't go with you Guts because (I love) Griffith (more than you). Maybe I'm wrong, maybe not Holy cow that was long, END RANT Anyways, subscribed because this was a great reaction series! I really like the introvert vibes and wit, it really felt "cozy" in a way, at least as an introvert. I'll probably watch your HxH reactions next Edit: Because my grammar was atrocious, and it probably still is but oh well.
