I was the bloke in the orange coat who looked after the unit at Ilford! It was the first time a 306 unit had left it's normal stomping ground - although it did escape to other areas either under it's own power or hauled, and are stories in themselves. Steam on the Met twice, Old Oak Common open day, Norwich, Cambridge, Ipswich, Romford - Upminster Centenary, Witham - Braintree, some show in Brighton, Chappel and Wakes Colne Wichford Southminster Southend Vic in conjunction with one of Mr Riley's steam trips from Manchester, and regularly popped out for a Shenfield Liverpool street run. It all came to an end when a problem with the HT cable became apparent at the same time as the franchise changed from 1st Group who supported its retention as a breath of fresh air for publicity and Nat Express who didn't. After the dashing of any hopes and aspirations to keep it running, it was handed to the NRM at Shildon who claimed it for posterity, and have since embarked on a cosmetic restoration. As yet nobody has contacted me to enquire what the big cable was lying on the floor of the 4 car saloon. It the new HT cable to get it to go again - thats if I can remember where all the bits go!

The BEA ones used to fly low over our house and the school I went to in in Blackthorn Road Welwyn Garden City, and so did Tridents. They were landing at the airfield in Hatfield after being flight tested. That would have been in 1961,2 and 3 when I was about five, six and seven. It's still the most beautiful airliner ever made! Can you still get a ride in a Comet? If they do short runs?

A real shame NONE of these Beautiful Relics were Flight approved any longer . Including the time it takes for everyone to " Put their Pants On " , and EDITING BREACHES ! , that lightning was in the air in 5 minutes . And the Mighty Victor . The most " Buck Rogers " aircraft to ever fly . And before anyone says , the Valkerie was straight " Thunderbirds " .

Great memories when i was chasing the 76’s before they were all cut. Remember going to Reddish on several occasions. Is the old Reddish TMD site still bare or has it all been built on now?

Used to go round the depot regularly, me and my mate would do Longsight first, then walk up Kirkmanshulme lane to the top where Belle Vue zoo used to be and catch a 203 bus to Reddish, it dropped us right outside the depot, from RS we would go on to Guide Bridge stabling point. We would cop over 100 on a good day :)

Many thanks for posting this.Drove up to Reddish from the South Midlands in the early 80's ,at that time all track was intact and signals all working.Think we parked in a short terrace st called Campbell terrace and next to that was the railway bridge where we took our photographs from. Also visited Woodhead a few times again all intact and signals working, surreal knowing trains would no longer traverse it!All very sad but as some of us know our country has been deliberately de industrialized!
