    This is one of those Irish country songs that I actually enjoy. The ornamentation is just beautiful. You can hear that mandolin at the start and we're away

    One of mums favourite songs. I'm now 56 and this song reminds me so.much of my mum.and dad, especially Saturday nights bringing friends and family back to our house after closing time for a party. All these old songs are etched in the memory forever. Was about 9 or 10 years old. Mum loved this song, sadly she passed away in 2016, and my life changed forever. Miss you bigtime mum. ☘☘☘☘.

    I think it's from the North of Ireland rather than the West of Ireland. The uncle of a friend of mine got it from a lady singing it in Dungiven. I think he was the first person to write it down. It's a lovely tune.

  • @gargarcomedy
    @gargarcomedy5 жыл бұрын

    The writer is it? Even if he's from the moon the song is about Galway. The first verse left out here clearly states he's in Oranmore. I'd say he was a Donegaller as he makes his way back there at songs end. But his heart stays with the lady and her Galway! Shawl. Which was probably made in Paisley😂😂

    Glway Shaw was issued on LP in 1978. The album was I'll Spend A Time With You. It was reissued on an album The Johnny McEvoy Collection around 1982. I haven't seen the LP, but this album was reissued on cd with the name 20 Collected Irish Ballads. The point of this ramble is that the CD 20 Collected Irish Ballads butchered 19 of the songs on the CD, shortening all the songs. Galway Shawl was one of the songs butchered, losing the first verse (which is included on the original 1978 LP). Taking out the first verse wrecks the song. Strangely, Dolphin, who put out this CD, included the whole song on another CD which is here on KZread. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l3mXr9inZbK7ccY.html

    I shall never forget the look on my wife face as she stood in front of him as he sang this song to her at one of his gigs in Kilburn. I could see the memories she was recalling of her younger days back home in the west of Ireland. She's gone now, God bless her, but we had great times.. Angela I love you still, always will.
