Virtua Racing was fun. Still is. I have the Switch version. A shame about Reiko's passing though.

I played this at a nearby pizza place from my home and high school. I love the smell of pizza while playing this game (Place also had Street Fighter, MK, and Marvel vs Capcom). I spent an insane amount of time there and between myself and some friends, probably kept that small family owned pizza place in business for years 😂.

Dang. I was living and working in Tokyo when 7 was released. Couldn't even notice back then because of how busy I was. :/ There's only one decent place in Stockholm with some old school arcade machines - and they only have MS 5 - which is what ive mostly been playing recently

Let's be honest, Metal Slug was Contras cooler hotter sister. Contra had nice sound effects and a weird vibe (in a good way), but metal slug is a masterpiece. Contra is street fighter 2, Metal slug is third strike.

This is probably the best retrospective video I’ve seen on Metal Slug so far. Something that wasn’t mentioned about 6 is that it has an alternate ending where Rootmars saves you instead of Morden, depending on the path you take in mission 4. Hope they get around to porting it to something other than the ps4 eventually.

Love that twice in the Doom series' development there was pushback against a metal soundtrack, only for the metal soundtrack to be wildly praised both times.

The additional monitors playing a broadcast of the race from multiple angles with a commentator is a reminder to the importance of unique hardware. Software emulators (good as they are) can't always replicate the experience of original hardware. Stuff like light guns, motion controls, touchpads, ect..., aren't easily emulated.

I know this may not be a popular opinion but as an avid Ps1 doom player, I cant stand to hear that stupid 'metal' music on Doom. The PS1 version had an incredible soundtrack of atmospheric music and creepy sound effects that made the game so creepy and immersive, and scary. The pc version soundtrack just sounds so silly and ruins the atmosphere and feel of the game. That composer was right that it wouldn't work.

How they managed to create such a masterpiece in such a short time is insane, especially for the time. With some of the most impressive sprites to date. These guys were on another level.

classic doom imo peaked with knee deep in the dead (excluding 64 which is the best classic game). it's design is so iconic and replayable. everything after just hasnt aged particularly well and sometimes just goes into cruel and unusual punishment territory. its engine, gameplay loop, combat, and mechanics is what carries it still to this day as ngl, alot of the custom wads that have been made in recent years have better and more enjoyable design than most of doom 1, 2 and final. but 2016 and eternal are peak tho

As a kid i used to HATE playing softball but the only reason i shut up and did it because we would go to a hole in the wall pizza joint after every game that had the Metal Slug 3 cabinet i was god awful at soft ball but kicked ass at Metal Slug and all my teammates would gather round and donate coins to try to beat the game each week. Probablh one of my fondest memories with gaming tbh

Dang man, this is a fantastic video essay. If I wasn't looking at the numbers, I'd swear you were a big-name KZread channel with a following because this is so very polished and well-made. You deserve way more views and subscribers than you've got. I'm going to tell everyone I know about you (don't get too excited, I'm a shut-in with just a few friends) to try to get some more eyes on you. Great work on the video, I can't wait to watch part 2 which I'm jumping into as soon as I finish this comment.

Thanks for a great retrospective! I've always loved the Metal Slug series. It was like Contra but so much better. I had no idea Metal Slug 6 had such a narrow release as far as home ports went. It's a shame they haven't put it out as an ACA Arcade Archives title.

I really wish the latest port wasn't trapped on Switch - it's an awesome way to play, except for that annoying little thing where the Switch has no analogue triggers, forcing you to either feather the shoulder buttons or use the right stick...

The book also mentioned that MS X was a much more ambitious project rather than simple remix of MS2. MSX was supposed to have branching path feature that was introduced in MS3. A lot of the levels from MS3 actually already exist in MSX's unused data files and they all thematically tie into MS1&MS2's stages. *For ex:* The winery from MS3 was meant to connect to MS1's 4th level bar and all the desert&mummy areas from MS3 were part of alternate or branching paths for MS2. You can even load these levels in an emulator using debug menu.

Time Warner's V.R. Virtua Racing is pretty damn impressive when we remember they had to share their dev kit with another team and didn't have access to the original source code. All they had was an arcade cabinet they would play over and over to match what they were making with what they were playing.
