Papa Z's Bees

Papa Z's Bees

Our journey keeping bees in an suburban environment. We began in 2021, so the videos might be helpful to new beekeepers. We are using Flow Hive equipment, so if you have an interest in Flow Hive, take a look. We added 5-frame resource nucleus hives in 2022 and a Long Langstroth hive and an Apimaye 7-frame nucleus hive in 2023. We also have added other equipment that have made our beekeeping lives easier and better for the bees. While we hope to harvest lots of honey, that is not our most important object. We are all about.....Beekeeping for the Bees!!!

    I am a new subscriber to your channel. I just started learning about the flow hives recently. I might have missed it if you mentioned it, but how often do you do extractions from each of your hives? Also you mentioned that one box is full of honey stores to overwinter the bees, but you also feed fondant, is that correct? I am wondering, are the honey stores in the lower box not sufficient to overwinter the bees without feeding them fondant? I would think that honey would be a purer form of food for them than fondant, or is that incorrect? Thank you for making videos and I hope to check out more of your videos to learn even more about beekeeping with the flow hives.

    The number of extractions will depend on the nectar flow in your area. You can check Beescapes.org to get an idea of the type flows you get in spring, summer and fall. In our area (suburban NE Okla), if all things go well, we can expect a good harvest during the spring flow and a medium harvest during the fall. I have talked with flow hivers in other parts of the country and they may get as many as 3-4 harvests. In the spring their second harvest may be as soon as 2 weeks after the first. Yes, the medium above the brood box is for the bees and I do also feed HiveAlive fondant over the winter. The fondant is primarily for emergency use, if the medium is emptied out over the winter. Here we have fairly warm winters and that is actually bad for the bees. In climates that remail constantly below 50 degrees, the bees do not hibernate (called torpor in bees) and therefore require more food than if they go into torpor. Kind of conter-intuitive. Another reason I use HiveAlive is that it has clinically proven natural additives that help the bee gut over the winter. My bees tend to use the HiveAlive for more than emergencies, I believe due in part to the "gut helpers". A couple of my hive take a couple of packs per winter. I usually leave them on until the first inspection, as many hives starve in the early spring, prior to the start of the nectar flow. If you decided to acquire a FlowHive, don't be surprised at the cost. They are pretty expensive, but they are extremely well made, using laser cuts of the lumber. They are also easy to build. If you throw in the fact that you don't need an extractor to harvest, that will save a lot of money, as well. Also, be advised that using flow hives does not preclude the need to inspect and treat the hives. Some think that, but you need to treat the brood area just like any other bee hive. If you do purchase, you can use this link. The link will take you to the Flow Hive website, where it will attach the discount. blue.mbsy.co/honeyflow/91083294

    I think your bees want to swarm or split, considering many of them are hanging out on the outside.. Maybe it didn't happen because you harvested

  • @PapaZsBees
    @PapaZsBees27 күн бұрын

    That is really a small amount of bees on the front of the hive and landing board. With high temperatures (90-100 degrees F) the bees will hang out considerably more. What you see is nowhere near what a swarm prelude looks like. I have another video that shows this same hive swarming back a couple of months ago. Check it out and see the difference. Are drones more likely to be produced in a certain area of the hive? Im curious if the drone frame was too far from the main brood area?

  • @PapaZsBees
    @PapaZsBeesАй бұрын

    This was the same location as last year, which worked great. As long as the queen can reach the frame, she should lay on the drone frame. The only thing that may have caused it, is that the hive swarmed earlier. I am going check it again this week.

    I just bought my first Flow Hive. I am spending my first year beekeeping working along side a mentor and experienced beekeeper to learn all I can before I get my first nucleolus. Can't wait to get my first official harvest! This weekend was my first time working live with the bees! Was soo cool!

  • @PapaZsBees
    @PapaZsBees2 ай бұрын

    Learn all you can. Also, don't expect to get a harvest in your first year. Even starting with a 5-frame nuc, the bees will take that first year just building up. I would also recommend adding a medium super just above the brood box and let the bees fill that before you add your Flow Hive super. That medium should never be harvested, it is just for the bees, to help them get through the winter. Also, be sure to remove the Flow Hive in the winder and store it. The Flow team does not have to do that, because they really don't have a winter there.

    @@PapaZsBees Do you also put a queen excluder between the brood frame and the medium?

  • @PapaZsBees
    @PapaZsBees2 ай бұрын

    I do not use a QE in the Flow hive. When the medium super (below the Flow super) is filled, the queen won't cross the filled honey frames to lay in the Flow super. The medium is often referred to as a honey bridge. I learned this from Fred Dunn. If you don't subscribe to his KZread, I would strongly recommend that you do. I have learned so much from him!!

    My first hives were Flow Hives. I had people telling me that it is not the best way to start. After discussions with them, they were concerned that people would set up flow hives and not do anything to support them and only harvest honey. As I said in my "Anatomy of a Flow Hive" video, you have to do everything to a flow hive brood area that you would on any Langstroth hive, including inspections every couple of weeks and monitoring and treating for Varroa mites. The biggest advance to using the Flow Hives, is the ease of harvesting, both for the beekeeper and the bees. It also saves you the price of a honey extractor, which can be expensive. I have never regretted my Flow Hive start. As long as you take care of the bees, you will be fine. Thanks for watching and the comment. Hope it helped. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Hello Joel. In the late 70 when i got started an older gentleman told me about tanging to stop a swam. I was in the garden one day and watched a swarm come off a hive of mine. I tried spraying water on them and that didn't work. I was jumping up and down hollering stop of course that didn't work at all. I remember about banging on a metal pan and it worked. (tanging) People watching will thing you have went nuts but i seen the swarm land within 10ft. of me. I have 4 swarm traps made up but only have 1 out. Hope by week end to get them out. I was build a lot of my hive bodies and my tablesaw broke. They called and said it was fixed so maybe by Friday i can pick it up at Lawton. Was right in the middle of making swarm traps and hive bodies so I'm running late. Good luck my friend . You win some and you lose some.

    Tip for people ,, I’d recommend leaving the flow key in the bottom slot whilst harvesting the honey as sometimes the parts of the frame will try close again and you won’t get all the honey out , same goes for closing the frame leave the key in a minute or so that way it compresses the frames perfectly inline 😀, also if people notice honey in the tray try harvesting half the frame 1st then harvest the second half when the flow slows down as it can back in in the honey flow channel and over flow in the hive 😀

    Starting to consider raising honey bees... wondering what is the flower-source for your bees? How much 'foraging' room/land do they roam into?

  • @PapaZsBees
    @PapaZsBees7 ай бұрын

    Bees will forage up to 5 miles, so it is almost impossible to tell the source. they will search large areas of suitable plants and when they find one, they will stay with that source until that source has been exhausted. You would need a large area (2-3 acres) of plantings if you are planning on creating a forage area on your own land. There are many sources of docs on what to plant. If you are considering bees, try subscribing to american Bee Journal and/or Bee Culture. They are great sources of info i started reading before I got my first bees.
