He may be playing that clean for once. just from y own experience, triggers (assuming he is even using some) are a bitch to get perfect live even for the pros. if he isn't using triggers the kick sound is going to just sound like mush.

I think this is a problem with how media is consumed these days. You were lucky to get a live VHS/DVD of your favourite band back in the day, now its every other day or week were there will be live footage released. As someone has already mentioned, the best takes would be compiled from the whole tour and then cut with pro shot footage from 2 performances. Everyone is a critic too these days and a certain level of perfection has been made to be expected (which i wholeheartedly dislike!) Everything has to be on the grid otherwise its ''Rubbish''...Ultimatley the over processing takes the energy and vibe away Excellent video man, and completely agree! \m/

I have direct experiece: attended the show in Milan and the performance from all of them was really not professional. Period. During lux aeterna the bass drum was barely audible. Then they uploaded the pro shot of that song live in Milan and in the video the bass drum is perfect, loud, clear and fast. All post processed. I bought the ticket cause after years I watched a bounch of those pro.shot videos and I thought "their live shows are still pretty damn good". They basically tricked me. Comparing a shitty iPhone 12 audio recording to their own official audio recording will always, inevitably, sound different. The bass response of a phones microphone will never be able to pick everything out, hence the glaringly obvious poor audio. I was able to watch them and enjoy seeing them playing some of my favourite songs and not once did i feel like anyone was faking anything

I do, too. But I've seen Metallica live like 9 times in the last 5 years. Some nights he is more on than others, but as a fellow musician of well over thirty years, I've been pretty impressed with their performances. Yes, they clean up in post, but they are not terrible live. They may not be as tight as they once were but they still have plenty of magic moments throughout their live show. They are not peak, but on their worst night they are still better than most. They still play/sing every bar for 2 hours. Most major modern acts don't even try.

Sound live is pretty poor in some locations, I have been to many concerts, and speakers are not mixing all the instruments well. At some places you cannot hear James' guitar at all, or Kirk's. Live audio engineers did very poor job with this circle stage, sound is very bad if you are close to the stage.

I'm absolutely aware there's no rock/pop act these days who don't "polish" in post. The word "fake" is not correct since he still plays the part, but he starts with an accented first note, or he flams it. Kicks are not even and the downbeat is accented. Post they use kick sample and quantize every bar. The same is done in the studio. Is it good or bad? It goes both ways. From business perspective I'd say that's the better way to represent artists image among fans. My personal (non business) oppinion - no, I'd preffer to represent myself for who I am, that's why I record my covers as stereo track, no postproduction, so everyone who hires me knows exactly what he is paying for. But in the end I'm just nobody, so my concept is wrong ;)

  • @schorschharrison

Good call! It‘s a spicy topic that can be discussed until the end of mankind. They use triggers/samples heavily also live these days but they crank it up a notch in post in comparison to live. I think I said it in the video, if you polish stuff to the amount where you sound better than in your prime, I‘m not so happy about it. It‘s just my opinion. You have totally valid points! 💯🤝
