    To be fair, even though they should have landed those bond wires on the grounding bar, the cover of the mc cable will still provide a ground path, even though it is not optimal. That presumes that the proper metal clamp fittings were used at all ends. Why did I call them bond wires? Because they are soft aluminium and not copper with green insulation as found in proper 12/2 or 12/3 with ground mc cable.

    @@restaurantrepairs It depends on local codes and the inspector. I would have to dig out my NEC code book to see if it is considered a violation. I have had it be ok in some cases and fail in others. I personally always landed bond and grounds, my work was always following others in those cases. If it was pre existing, the client was on the hook to correct it. If I missed it on what I did, I had to correct it. When I did encounyer this, I always showed it to the client and wrote it up in my reports and invoices.

    I may be ignorant because I’m not in the industry and I know there are a multitude of problems with the unit however, with it being 20 years old is there NO way to replace just a compressor if say everything else was good? Or is it just a case of “throw it away and buy new” when all I hear is how the new stuff is hot garbage. I’m genuinely curious.

  • @restaurantrepairs
    @restaurantrepairs5 сағат бұрын

    Great questions. Straight talk sure…. That compressor gonna cost ME 2k. I gave them that option. A 20 year old unit was on borrowed time long ago. The 18 year old unit that got a new compressor should better had been replaced. Yep they got more years out of it but it’s about downtime. How often do you want to have all your food going soggy and quality and Inspection concerns. It’s owner by owner decision and it’s often tempting to swap a compressor only but generally the long game view is fiscally wiser.

  • @travisrussell5731
    @travisrussell57315 сағат бұрын

    Absolutely, you can just replace the compressor. However though, you need to replace your TXV or piston as well, flush condenser and evaporator with a proper refrigerant kit(idr the name of the flush chemical), replace drier filters, purge with nitrogen while soldering, pull a vacuum for 10 mins and let vacuum rest for 30 mins to ensure no leakage, and obviously inspect coil condition and fan condition for both evap and condenser, and actually use the low/high pressure switches. If all that is completed then you'll easily get another 5-10 years from the system.

  • @restaurantrepairs
    @restaurantrepairs4 сағат бұрын

    @travisrussell5731 until the Evap ends start leaking and then we’re replacing half of a 20 year old system cuz you already did the compressors. I’ve done it. Owners are the boss.

    @@restaurantrepairs that's why you look at what you're doing. Not every 20 yr old evap coil is shot, It really doesn't happen that often unless they have neglected the unit. Also, I wasn't talking to you, I replied to Evan. Even IF the evap started to leak you would peer pressure them into replacing an entire air handler? when only an evap coil is needed??? You sir are the definition of a con-man.

    You think that the low air flow from the fan would be the cause of the ice up? Always check air flow 1st, fan, belt, return n supply duct. I agree the freez stat wasn't wired correctly. No heat to melt the ice?

  • @restaurantrepairs
    @restaurantrepairs11 сағат бұрын

    Hard to completely believe. I did adjust the fan first cuz I needed the airflow to melt the ice and was definitely lacking. I’ve found that the air defrost is just as streamline as any heat. I’ve used heat guns and torches and it doesn’t really seem to make that big of a difference. Let the air eat it up. When it’s 6 inches thick it is what it is.

    Measure across the same phase on the contactor, that will give you your voltage drop when pulled in across that phase. 1-2, 3-4, 5-6. That fourth contact, as someone else mentioned before is an aux contact and only rated for 10A (or only 3A depending on what standards you chose to follow), not the 32A the first three are rated for. May get you by in a pinch, but that fourth contact is not meant for the normal loads on that contactor. Just for low current auxiliary uses like status, interlocking etc... Why it's labeled 13 and 14. Yes, I looked up data sheet on that contactor to verify.

  • @inothome

    @@restaurantrepairs That's fine, just be aware that contact is not rated the same as the other three. It gets more confusing, complicated and more derated when talking inductive loads, which the compressors / motors are. Look up the data sheet if you want your head to spin. lol

So probably that's what I'll replace it with? And do I just fill it to clear the sight glass, or is there some way to measure more accurately that I don't know about? @@restaurantrepairs
