Vito's death in the book is better. He dies in Michael's arms and says, "Life is so beautiful." Despite everything that happened to him in his life, he dies without regret, unlike Michael.

You really just talked about my undergraduate thesis on the Godfather series in 7 minutes. It's delightful to see my favorite movie get this much love and different analysis and interpretations even after all these years!

Correct Vito outwarded reacted calmly, but in the deleted scene Michael says “you gave your word on not seeking revenge, but I did not.” And Vito smiles at Michael and says, we have time to discuss. He knew Michael’s oils avenge Sonny’s death even after he himself was gone. And felt at peace with that. Vito was not the calm exterior peacemaker her constantly presented, and the books elaborate on this as well. Vito, while outwardly not scolding Carlo for beating Connie, had his men start to watch carlo’s every step. Michael avenged Sonny for not just himself, but for his father. And his father knew all about it.
The best depiction of masculinity is a murderer, extortionist, drug dealer, loan shark, and racketeer, who steals from and commits violence against those around him, and gently gives the stolen fruits of his despicable actions to his family, from his own bloody hands. Yes, that's how we should raise our sons, to be like Vito Corleone. How do you think he came to power in the first place?
The scene where Michael shoots the gangster and captain, fantastic scene. But I saw it as that pivotal moment of a man, deciding to step over the threshold to a world that he can never return from. The forces around him were pushing him, but HE made the decision, he had a moment to think about it, at that moment, he chose evil. He did it to preserve his family, but it cost him his soul.
Movies and people have great difficulty coming to terms with the fact that both angels and demons can live in just one person. The greatest acts of kindness and love can come from someone who commits the greatest acts of cruelty and evil. That is certainly a unique characteristic of what it means to be a human.

The very best movie ever.
We all carry deep flaws, Vito is certainly of all the characters, the best man, but he has done a lot of evil. It was understandable, that's the way of this dark world, he was vengeful, but patient. But Vito was truly held from utter depravity by good traditions. You learn as you grow older, traditions we had really show their virtues and necessity, and often we find ourselves in a place where we've lost them. Our culture vilifies family, the kind that begets without much outside help, it treats men as a cancer to be treated if not eradicated, and it demonizes tradition. The best lessons we can learn, is to honor our Fathers and our Mothers, to like our Fathers, look out for our Mothers, and emulate the hard work our Fathers build for. We all fall short of this, as our Fathers have also. The point is to understand that despite the human imperfection, that the family that has gone on since the First Man and First Woman, that our ancestors carried to new lands, are good, and need to be preserved at all costs. In other words, a great video, one that certainly outdoes the normal filth of the internet.

Sonny ALSO depicted masculinity in a big way, especially the way he tried to protect his sister.

So let me see if I understand this. Michael's eldest brother is murdered after being set-up by his brother-in-law. Michael murders said brother-in-law, his sister's husband. Then he murders his actual brother. His first wife is murdered and his second wife leaves him after aborting their third child because Michael is the personification of pure evil. His daughter has an incestuous relationship with his nephew before she too is murdered. How is this a representation of masculinity except for the worst kind of masculinity? In the second movie, in Michael's return from Cuba he asks Tom Hagen what he got his son for his birthday so that he knows. Is this meant to be noble? Is this meant to be the sign of a family man? What this movie makes clear is that the Mafia's preoccupation with family is just a tool to keep everyone in line, and has nothing to do with family at all. A point The Sopranos makes over and over and over again. And on a smaller point, you mention that before the attempted murder of Vito, Michael was more concerned about being an individual rather than being a family man, and using him being a WW2 veteran as somehow being evidence of this? What? He volunteered to join the fight against Germans and Italians in Europe but this is somehow a character flaw and he only become a man afterwards? Come on... Michael is a fascinating and complex character, but this emphasis on masculinity is BS.
Some of the most evil men in history deceived themselves into believing they were doing something good. Micheal is evil but it’s his delusions of family and masculinity that motivate him.

Are you agreeing with me, that if these films are about family, and being a family man, that Michael, and pretty much every male character in these films, are not men that men in real life should take inspiration from, especially those men who are family men?

What nonsense. Criminals aren’t admirable. All they do is put their families in danger. They think they’re protecting their families. Instead they either end up dead, in jail, or their families end up in the crossfire, dying themselves. Michael ends up alone and abandoned in the end because he bought into his father’s way of life.
It may instead be about adherence to one's own values, and principles. Michael risked his life to fight for a system that betrayed him, and others who believed in it. The crux comes when the corrupted police officer punches him, tied down, after the hit on his father. This betrayal is like that of Bonasera, for example, at the very start. It shows the futility of seeking justice from corrupted police, judges, senators. Betrayal, by a system believed in. It leads to seeking justice on one's own terms. It poses the issue of what to do about a wrong suffered, due to failures in a system believed in? Fight it? Join it? Maintain your own standards? Or adopt those of others? All human beings face this dilemma, in some way. It isn't a question of masculinity. It's a question of character.

My old man was a humble roofer. Somehow, he managed to buy several apartment buildings, took care of his family, never had a hand out for anything and was a conduit to his friends lending money at will and being there for anyone who would come to him for help. I didn't know how many friends he had until hundreds of people showed up at his funeral. They had to shut down part of the road and post police officers. For hours, a succession of folks I never knew came up to speak about him and his impact on their lives. You'd think they lost a mayor. I took over as the patriarch for the family and inherited his role. At the same time, I inherited his maturity and a different peace of mind that in spite of feeling overwhelmed, I knew I was going to be alright because everything that he had been preparing me for and investing in me came to fruition and I felt 100% ready for it and it was upon his leaving us that I realized what mattered most in life; Family. I came back to New York to spend the last few of his years taking care of him and thank God that he got to see me become the man he always wanted me to be. And here I was thinking that he was just a humble roofer. He was more than that, not just to me, but obviously to a lot of folks. He was a man's man and I couldn't be 10% the man that he was, but I'll spend the rest of my life trying as hard as I can. And I do my best to pass that on to my grandson who will be a better man than me.

I have a few problems with this interpretation. The main thing is your assertion that Michael's turn for the worse started with Apollonia's death, because the moment Michael learned of the attempt on his father's life he began to grow distant from Kay, and become more cold and calculated, plotting the killing of Sollozzo. I also think that Vito's character is a little more complicated. He shows that isn't as professional as he shows himself in business, like how he cleary doesn't care about Luca Brasi as much as he tells him he does. From my view, and somewhat based on how Copolla talks about the themes of this movie, I think what it's getting at is the war/balance between family and business. Vito clearly cares about his family a lot and that drives his business decisions, while Michael becomes only focused on the business side of things, even having family members killed. "It's not personal. It's strictly business"

I first saw the Godfather when I was in high school when it came on NBC for the first time. From the opening scene where the mortician was asking the Godfather for 'justice', I immediately saw Vito as a man of unnatural power and respect. Not that I ever would want to join the mob, what stuck with me is that, as a man, to be in control of your envirion and to be able to be provide protection to your love ones no matter what the odds. I rather be the one to be asked for help than the one to ask for help.

I agree Michael turns dark after his wife (Apollonia) and unborn child (she was pregnant per the book) are killed in front of him. His whole goal from that point on is to protect his family at all costs. After Sonny is killed Vito makes peace with the people who murdered his son. Michael handled Apollonia's murderer differently. He searches for years to find his ex-bodyguard the man that killed his 1st wife. And then personally kills him. The scene was cut out of the movie due to how violent it was. The pictures can be found online.
