    I've an issue with my plug guess I think it's short bcz whenever I plug-in the charger the plug (attaching to the Mac) gets extremely hot within seconds Can you tell how to open that plug and correct the wires

  • @el_micha
    @el_micha Жыл бұрын

    My MacBook Pro 15" Mid-2015 always tends to get hot, esp. if the device is used at the same time as charging it. This is the most stress you can put on the power supply since it needs to put out a significantly higher amperage than when just charging and not using the laptop. So since the aluminum body of the Macbooks is designed to act as a heat sink, it is normal it gets quite hot near the charging port. That aside, try to borrow another charger to see if the same symptoms are showing. If not, then your charger should be defective. There is a tutorial on the website iFixit how to cut off a damaged part of the cable and re-solder the inner wires to the plug. It is not too easy tho and requires quite some skill. Good luck either way, my friend!

    Buy shrinking tube (2:1) in diameter of 4.8 mm (up to 6.4 mm) shrinking to 2.8 mm (up to 3.2 mm) or (3:1) up to 9 mm. It's important. There are two different types of tubes, low and high quality. The high-quality heat shrinking tubes are easier to stretch. The low-quality ones are made with shiny material/plastic. The better quality tubes are matt (they look and feel similar to the new Apple cords). The high-quality tubes are more expensive, and hard to find, but worth it! There is also tubing with adhesive (more expensive than regular). 3:1 tubes are more expensive than 2:1. In the description of this video, you'll find more information. Good luck my friend and let me know how it goes!

    Great video! Two questions: (1) Why not use a 3:1 ratio tube? (2) How about using a shrinking tube with an adhesive? It would create a much more secure seal that's waterproof.

  • 2 жыл бұрын

    3:1 and adhesive one are more effective but relatively expensive and hard to buy in some regions. If the availability is not a problem, 3:1 adhesive tubing is a better option

  • @el_micha
    @el_micha Жыл бұрын

    A 3:1 or if available even 4:1 ratio would be much better. Trying Amazon's heatshrink with adhesive, I found as it shrunk it got quite hard/unflexible. I can't tell if it is the adhesive that hardens or the fact there's not the slightest slip of cable within heatshrink anymore. So the heatshrink area is very stiff, while the bare cable after is very flexible. So there's a hard break between hard/soft instead of a desired transition gently absorbing the bending forces. With an iPhone charger cable I found after a few weeks there was the wire started to break again right after the heatshrink part. So beware of the adhesive variant!

    Fixed my cable today. Thanks for the video and thanks for those who made useful comments. Here are some points I think should be highlighted: 1. the heat shrink tube can be greatly stretched, in my case, 6mm diameter -> ~15mm 2. long nose plier is really useful to stretch the tube. 3. The quickest way I found is: insert two thin metal bars (e.g. hex key) into the tube, cross them and make a "X" as far as you can, and then continue with the lone nose plier with some effort but steady. There is a threshold and once you reach it, you will feel the tube somehow losing its flexibility and cannot shrink back (but it will when heated later) It should take only 1~2 minutes if you are doing it properly. 4. if you don’t have heat gun, your wife’s scented candle will work as well - just hold the tube several centimeters above the flame for a while, and make sure vent after the work so she will not notice it, or you probably have to pay more than a heat gun…

  • @GiriGagan

  • @el_micha
    @el_micha Жыл бұрын

    @@achis9734 Yes, a lighter works also. Just be very careful, esp. with white heatshrink tube. It easily gets burned, soot builds up or the material starts bubbling if the flame gets too close. In my experience, a heat gun worked way better than any flame.

    Am I looking at this wrong, or why wouldn't you simply use a bigger diameter shrink tubing rather than taking the time to stretch a smaller diameter tubing? Better still, why not use wrap around heat tubing?

  • 3 жыл бұрын

    The MagSafe cord diameter is 3mm. In general, the heat shrinking tubes shrink x2 or x3. You may use tubing up to 6mm if x2. I use 4.8mm shrinking to 2.4mm because I wanna to wrap the cord as much as possible
