    Well that was darn impressive young man. You may be goin to music school, but I say you have a promising career in the United States military. The mission is simple, every day bright n' early at 0500 hours you will sound your fine sounding trumpet to wake up the cadets. Your such a talented young man that when we march onto the battlefield I'm more sure than Truman with the bomb that they'll even let you play the war horns. You, young trumpeter, can sound the horns that sets fear into the hearts of our adversaries, letting them know that we don't back down in the land of the free and the home of the brave. I believe that with your trumpet you can protect this land of stars and stripes. Good on you young man.

    I hope that this comment was intended facetiously. Anyone who knows this piece realizes that this band plays the sh-- out of it. My compliments to director Julius Tolentino and his student band. You’re completely right what I meant to say was…. This band so completely amazing it out does duke ellingtons own band. The calibre of music here are so incredibly high they definitely the leading music on the states without a shadow of a doubt. I can think is I’m getting rid of all my duke Ellington recordings and just listening to this band exclusively. That better?

  • @billkirchner6738
    @billkirchner6738Ай бұрын

    @@jonburton1935 Well, yes and no. To be sure, this is a superb student band--one of the best I've ever heard. But to compare it to one of the greatest ensembles in jazz history (hear the 1937 and 1956 Ellington recordings of "D & C in Blue") is pointless. We can--and should-- give credit where it's due without indulging in hyperbole.

    As everyone seems so bent out of shape let me correct myself….. This the most astounding thing I’ve ever seen. These kids are so unbelievably good they play better than Ellington could have done himself. Why aren’t they recording cds and getting record deals I have no idea. I’m just so overwhelmed with seeing such young people being able to surpass the capabilities of the Ellington band itself…….jazz is sooooo not dead…. Ellington will forever never be the same.

  • @franklee1550

    Too gimmicky. Really, every note has to have some effect on it? Sadly at the end when they play an actual unison line with no effects the intonation is blatantly bad. The kids embouchure is bad and a good teacher would correct quite a few things including keeping his fingers curved and not straight. Just because someone plays jazz doesn’t mean you throw good position and training out the window. Sort of an emperor’s new clothes vibe with this. You better praise them because they’re kids and the band is so diverse and you don’t want to be seen as a racist, sexist kid hater. It’s actually kind of mediocre. My hs jazz band was just as good or even better. We played Chase’s Get It On and the trpts nailed it. Got the recording from ‘76. 1/2 that band went on to be pro players. Just realized the kid is the director’s son. Makes sense now. Like the coach’s kid on little league is always the starting pitcher.
