Tofer's Car Tales

Tofer's Car Tales

Hello! Thanks for visiting Tofer's Car Tales!

Being a lifelong car nerd, I’ve accumulated a ton of random automotive facts and trivia I'd like to share. I've learned some video editing skills over the years and I enjoy cobbling together videos that are visually interesting. I'm not a pro however, so please forgive any rough edges. =]

I love all cars, but have a particular fondness for underdogs and unsung heroes. Of course just about anything produced in the '70's and '80's qualifies. A majority of these cars suffered massively from smog regulations and dubious build quality. So for those that have actually survived... there is a special place in my heart.

I'll stroll right past a Ferrari to check out a Ford Fairmont. My knees go weak at the sight of a pristine first gen Ford Taurus. And I particularly adore the most unloved of all Mustangs, the Mustang II.

My hope is to produce content that will entertain by telling the fascinating stories of how these cars came to be.

Tofer

    I would like to see a lot of legendary names return, but they all cannot return at once or if at all. To address what you said. They did get rid of all the legendary brands and nameplates history, and heritage. GM has a strong history and heritage and needs to take advantage of that. The loss happened over time as you said. There is still equity in those nameplates too. You are correct not everyone wants and suv or crossover. I do not. I have no use for them. I own two Oldsmobiles: 1992 Toronado and a 1996 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight. There is not much variety as you stated. We live an suv and cuv world. The few sedans we do have in the United States are imported. They have more vehicle variety in China, Europe, The Middle East than they do in the United States I will list the nameplates them for you by brand: Chevrolet: I would not add anything as it is the mass market brand with most of GM's suvs and trucks and suvs. The focus is on style and affordability. Any cars they get could be sold by Oldsmobile brand at the Chevrolet dealership. Chevrolet is not the end all and be all. Pontiac: Bonneville/Parisienne/Grand Ville( one car with trim level names I just listed( like it was in the 1960's and 1970's), Grand Prix/STE( coupe/sedan or sedan only performance midsized( Cadillac CT5 platform), Firebird/Trans Am( sports car), GTO/Grand Am( compact sedan/coupe( Cadillac CT4 platform). Four Pontiac models with variations in those models using the same platform as Cadillac CT5 and CT6( economies of scale). They would be sold at GMC/Buick dealers. Oldsmobile: Ninety Eight( Lincoln Town Car and Fleetwood/Deville large traditional luxury American segment large car)( use Cadillac CT6 platform), Eighty Eight/Regency/LSS( could share a large model with Holden)premium/near luxury midsized segment( below Ninety Eight but above Cutlass). Toronado( coupe or four door coupe in the near luxury/luxury segment( be what Aurora could not be/emphasis of style and luxury and technology that is a value), Cutlass/442( coupe/sedan aimed at the midsized market. Holden could sell this one as well. Custom Cruiser(wagon/cuv), Buick : Regal( premium midsized front wheel drive(Lexus ES), Riviera(like Toronado with more a Lincoln/Cadillac slant), Park Avenue/Le Sabre( one sedan with trim level names)( not Lucerne again) and Cadillac to go in the direction it is now but moving up scale. The luxury you aim for and have to work for. This is where those upscale Buicks come into play along with the suv's they have now. Holden( use Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick models) to make up a brand and build them in the United States/Mexico/Canada and export them. Those models will be aimed at the export market and Australia. GM could use the Holdens to expand globally and they would use the Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Buick models to do that under the Holden name. I am sure Cadillac will want to bring back Eldorado. That would have to be an expensive loaded luxury high end coupe/four door coupe( Seville). You have to do this economically and there has to be a reason for each brand and nameplate to exist. Pontiac and Oldsmobile and Holden is where GM can express itself.

    @@OLDS98 Completely agree with you, but would also love a return for Ford Thunderbird, Mercury (especially Cougar), Lincoln (in Mark and Town Car series), Imperial and Plymouth. Not all of us want or need an SUV, CUV, minivan or truck. The return of style would be very welcome!

  • @OLDS98
    @OLDS984 күн бұрын

    @@jimlubinski4731 Thank you for your compliment. I hear you and I know many other Ford fans feel the same. Lincoln is nothing but crossovers and suv's. Ford only has Mustang . Ford in China and in The Middle East sells a Taurus and Lincoln Zephyr sedan. It would ice to see an Imperial indeed. There is no style or substance right now. Glad to know you appreciate my post.

    @@OLDS98 Too bad so much has become consolidated and a lot has been discontinued. I grew up in the '70s and '80s and remember when there were the 4 "G" body cars ('78 to '87), Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Regal, Cutlass and some others as well. Not to mention an El Camino and wagons on this same platform. I wanted all 4 way before being old enough to drive (My family did have an Olds Cutlass Supreme later). These days I drive a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria. I have always liked GM and Ford and Chrysler. Yes, It would be great to have a vast variety to choose from.

  • @OLDS98
    @OLDS983 күн бұрын

    @@301Pont You are correct about the big consolidation. That is why things are the way they are and it has not been a good thing at all. I recall all those cars too. GMC had a G Body also. That is why they really have a deep following with the GM G Bodies to this day. They still love the C and B bodies. The B Bodies died in 1996 replaced by suv's. I drive two Oldsmobiles: 1992 Toronado and a 1996 Ninety Eight. That is why I broke it down the way I did when I wrote it. It could be done if done correctly.

    I will never understand why guys tend to treat their vehicles like people considering it does seem a bit creepy, especially when they called it their babies, a she/her, or part of a family, just like what Lincoln and the girls' dad, their gramps, and Lana for some reason during "Leave No Van Behind," basically they should’ve let Vanzilla died due it being around in 1962, which should’ve already been dead in like 10 to 15 years, wow Nickelodeon should’ve done some rewrites for Vantastic Voyage, and by that I mean, just keep the new van instead of getting Vanzilla back, and not make their dad so attached to it. Basically, guys should’ve known there's other vehicles in this world, they can't just be the ones they're still clinging to since they don't always last forever, which is also why they shouldn’t give their old cars handed down to their kids when they get older because there aren't any miles left, which resulted them to break down and die. Also during this episode, Hank should’ve realize this doesn't give him the right to blame Bobby for the destruction of his truck since it's already 20 years old, and it's gonna die anyway.🚗🚐🚘🚙🛻

    I enjoy your videos very much, they are car history, but you mix in art and a omage to the past, the Oldsmobile Toronado is my favorite videos especially as you sprinkle in Annie Lennox so delicously! One of my close buddies still has his 1991 Toronado, its a black on black beauty, but underneath its a true American car, not built very well, we all drive high end Japanese cars now, als this is one reason Olds is no more.

    If GM indeed does revive Pontiac, they should offer a V8 rwd sedan under the Bonneville name, naturally aspirated, and supercharged. This could pick up where the Hemi Chargers left off. And they should also revive the Firebird/Trans Am. And not bother with any V6's or EV's. Also, offer 6 speed manual on all models, in addition to the automatic.

    I made a Monogram model of a 79 Firebrd Turbo, imagined sitting in one, later a friend got a 79 Firebird Esprit and it was a fun ride, id later get a 70 GTO in the UK 0-60 in 4 seconds as was a well sorted car, it would be great to see the Pontiac brand again, the Challenger shows a nice shape can still be made, so maybe a Firebird of sorts and have a GTO option as a nod to the past, port in some nice engine sounds and imagine and feel some nostalgia of sorts, me I just returned to making model kits of States cars, MPC,AMT,Polar,Revell,it's fun. Best wishes to the uploader,loved ones and fellow viewers.

    Thank you for your video. Thank you for putting your video together. Everyone is talking about this online. I do not know if it is true or not . I would hope that it is not a joke. It is a bad one if it is. There are valid points made for Pontiac's return in the video. If anything, GM needs to bring three brands: Pontiac and Oldsmobile and Holden( GM Australia). They brought Hummer back and sell them through the GMC network. Not everyone wants or has use for a crossover and suv. That is what the market is in the United States. Pontiac and Oldsmobile would have to be boutique brands within GM and not full line like Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac. GM recognizes there is an issue with Buick in the United States and they are trying to revamp it and rebuild it in the United States. Buick in China sells three sedans: La Crosse, Regal, and Verano. Cadillac sells three in China: CT4, CT5, CT6. If you position the brands correctly, it could work. Not everyone wants a Chevrolet either. You could sell Pontiacs at the Buick GMC dealers. You could sell Oldsmobile at Chevrolet and Cadillac dealers. It would give Chevrolet dealers something to step up to ( Hyundai/Genesis)and Cadillac dealers something to bring buyers in. They sold Oldsmobile at Cadillac and Chevrolet dealers for years. This would give GM a way to build and sell expressive sedans and coupes at a good value. The Holdens would have to be exported from the United States and modified to Australia tastes and Holden and Oldsmobile and Pontiac have worked together before. GMC makes GM money. They may sell the same vehicles as Chevrolet. but they make money. Think of Pontiac as the GMC car line. Think of Oldsmobile as the Mercury of Lincoln as it once was and entry level luxury of Chevrolet. Just my thoughts.

    I feel his pain a man’s vehicle is the only place a man can be himself and let his emotions out most guys have to keep a stone face during hardship or during sadness but you can bet when they are on there way to or back from somewhere all alone you can just let it all out
