Great demo! I have two DK Synergys (S/Ns 01280 & 01625), a Kaypro computer and SynHcs software. What is that disk drive emulator you have in your Kaypro? The Kaypro is wonderful, but my disk drives have been temperamental and constantly going out of alignment. I'd love to upgrade my Kaypro.

Hi, yes the diskdrives are temperamental indeed. I chose a Lotharek drive emulator and use it as boot device a:. I can also copy files to disk from there which is useful sometimes. Check the list of supported devices on the Lotharek site: hxc2001.com/download/floppy_drive_emulator/support.htm.

@@theassociate2734 I've updated my Kaypro with a Gotek emulator drive running FlashFloppy firmware. Transferred SYNHCS and all of my Synergy files to the USB drive - works a charm now!

To follow up, I put a Gotek flash drive with FlashFloppy firmware into my KayPro. I copied over my Synergy disk images and it works beautiful!

Synergy really starts to get interesting with a Kaypro attached. If you´re into electronics you can upgrade your Synergy to a II+ with the Tauntek kit. Thanks you´re kind words on my little demo.

Row C is controlling the ratcheting (not really ratcheting). Row B delivers a trigger pulse for the envelopes and makes them react dynamically. Quite an unusual design - the sequencer puts out triggers - not gates.

It should also be working with the Kaypro 10. Both computers are using CP/M and have the serial port. I´m using the Kaypro 2.

Yes, the portamento only works when contacts are closed using a footswitch. I´m using a dual footswitch for legato and portamento. The Synergy has a dedicated expression pedal input with a stereo plug.

@@lucienmontandon8003 The Kaypro 10 should be working fine with the Synergy unless you have a Synergy II with the suitable serial port. You will need a disc with a program to set the baud rate of the Kaypro and the synhcs software. You don´t need two disc drives for this.

Hi, yes I still have it and don´t think I will ever let it go. It´s really rare and sounds beautiful. My system modules are: 5 x VCO, 1x Processor, 2xDual EG, 2xVC Variable State Filters with SSM 2040, 1x VCF with CEM 3020, 1xVC LFO, 1x Dual Ring Modulator, 1xNoise S/H, 1xDual VC LFO, 1xVC Mixer, 1x VC EG, 1x Quad LFO, 1x Dual Resonant Filters. 20 Modules in total. Still waiting to find the ultra rare digital Oscilator...

I‘m working on some university level research about the RMI Harmonic. It seems the founder of Digisound had a deep knowledge about those very early digital concepts, that were based on logic circuits rather than complex microchips. I‘ve read that he would have had papers where he discussed some findings, also about additive synthesis by walsh functions. But it is extremely hard to find anything about it on the net. Even ChatGPT gave up… ;-)

@@tihinter Eurorack is a very versatily system. A friend has bought a RMI Harmonic many years ago and still has it. I also own a DK Synergy, which is also a very early digital synth. I didn´t know that Charles Blakey of Digisound was also into additive synthesis - interesting!

(I would guess less than 100, maybe less, don't know) I think a lot of us would be eager to see a complete presentation of this piece. (History, ins & outs, construction, architecture of its synthesis, interfaces, famous users, etc...)

Historical indeed. If you are listening to the music of Laurie Spiegel you can hear the granddad of the Synergy, the Bell Labs Alles System. The Synergy is a complex design with many digital parts inside. Quite a challenge to revive one. I´ll keep on posting some videos I consider to be interesting about the Synergy (for the synth afficionados at least).

Hello there, I wonder if I could have permission to use some of the audio in your synth demo here to put into my video I am doing about the rise and fall of a computer called the Atari ST. This computer was initially going to have a 64 oscillator based sound chip based on very similar technology to this synth. It's just so people can get an idea of what it actually means and the sort of sound it could have had instead of the Colecovision type sounds it ended up with due to various technical problems with their prototype and contractual problems with Yamaha refusing them something acceptable (hence they got the Colecovision sounding YM-2149 Yamaha chip instead)

If you can imagine an affordable computer in 1986 for £400/$500 having a cut down less sophisticated version of this sort of technology that's how revolutionary it would have been. The music in your video sort of captures the feeling of something missed with this AMY sound chip that never made it out of the laboratory, something which would have been quite wonderful for bedroom musicians to own and games developers alike to experiment with. It's the missing link between things like the 3 oscillator based sound chip of the Commodore 64 computer (a sort of bare bones simplified Roland Promars type sound but revolutionary for computers) launched in the early eighties and the sort of unlimited multiplexed DAC based digital sound of modern computers we use today.

@@theassociate2734 Still reading up on it, quite a complicated story and the roots go all the way back to the original Atari and their dream of making amazing 16bit machines, too expensive for home users though. I try to find sources from magazines of the time to keep it as accurate as possible. It's only been a few days since the original question of why Atari used such a budget sound chip on such an advanced computer as the Atari ST. For Jack Tramiels Atari it all starts with the loss of the Amiga technology and one of the designers purposefully sabotaging the chipset designs he was legally required to send to Atari. It would have made a nice battle, oscillator based technology in Atari versus DAC based technology in Amiga. All happing around the time the Fairlight was being demonstrated to musicians. I would like to do the story justice so it's taking a lot of my spare time right now just working out what to even include/where to start.

My Synergy needs a nice paintjob, like that. Did you sand your casing down and add primer and then spray it? I'm just trying to figure out how to restore my case as it looks a bit chipped on the edges(small chips). Thanks

I think nearly all Synergys need a paintjob. I did sand down the case, but I didn´t do the paintjob myself. I finally found a company near me that also does paintjobs on wooden surfaces. Most only do cars. They sprayed the Synergy with several layers of high gloss paint and let it dry in between. Then added a clear layer. Overall costs was 750 Euros, but it sure was worth it.

Yes, the Synergy is quite unique. Amazing sounds are possible if you have the Synergy II+ and the Kaypro II computer. Buy it if the price is reasonable - they are rare and desirable.

Hi, I´m not sure if I understand the question right. My Synergy has been upgraded to a II+ model and running the latest software. Currently it is connected to a Kaypro II and working quite well with the SynHcs software. It connects to the Kaypro via a standard DB9 connector. If you need more info, let me know.

@@osceeulator9417 No, the first version does not have a serial port for communicating with the Kaypro unfortunately. If you want to program your own sounds you´ll have to upgrade it to II+. If you have knowledge in electronics, you can do this on your own. Otherwise better contact a service person to do this. Upgrade pcbs are available from Tauntek.com including installation manual. Well worth the effort - a II+ is a very powerful machine, the Synergy 1 is just a playback machine for voice carts.

@@osceeulator9417 No, the first version does not have a serial port for communicating with the Kaypro unfortunately. If you want to program your own sounds you´ll have to upgrade it to II+. If you have knowledge in electronics, you can do this on your own. Otherwise better contact a service person to do this. Upgrade pcbs are available from Tauntek.com including installation manual. Well worth the effort - a II+ is a very powerful machine, the Synergy 1 is just a playback machine for voice carts.

Hi, these are the presets which are loaded when the Synergy is turned on. This video has been shot before the unit was upgraded to a II+.

great demo! What a machine... I have just got one, and the Kaypro, and its being serviced right now! (new P/S - no loud fan - recapping, and hxc drive being fitted into drive b on the kaypro) Keep up the good work! (ie post some more great demos!)
The Synergy is a really awesome machine together with the Kaypro. My Synergy was completely dead when I got it and I did the repair work myself. It´s really worth every effort - a digital instrument with style and character.
