Only answer is in the comments. He said it was a rear wheel bearing! I have the exact same noise but assumed it was in the front. I'm checking the rear now by putting it up on a lift and running all 4 to see if it is front or rear. 1999 4runner

Question, I have the exact noise in my front. Definitely not the front wheel bearings as they are good and changed out. Only operate the car 2 wheel rear. Do these fail and take the truck off the road??? I can live with the noise for what I use it for

@@allsuccess4546 Yeah so get this, it wasn't the differential. It was the CV joint on the passenger side that failed. While I had that done, i changed the lower and upper control arms, both sides, the struts and strut mounts both sides. Riding beautiful until the NYC roads beat the crap out of it again.

yes this noise, sounded the exact same and was the front diff. Felt like a grinding that slowed the truck down. Fixed at dealer under warranty and can finally drive around without sounding like I'm piloting a rock tumbler.

Hey I have a set of 2.5 donahoe racing Coilovers I just took off a Tundra somebody gave me. Do you have any idea of what they go for used? They say 2.5 and 13-650 on them.

This just sealed the deal my friend. I replaced the tensioner pulley, idler pulley but it continued and got worse. Next I changed the front passenger hub assembly. Still had the noise. I changed the drivers side hub assembly. I just swapped out the fan clutch tonite and now I just watched your video. This is exactly the noise that I refer to as the "rotating screech of death" Thanks for posting this. What was the remedy ?

i think this is the 3rd gen 4runner the same suspension set up as the 90 series land cruiser i have. i have front hub locks and when i disengage(free position) the sound goes away so its definitely from the front differential. i have the same sound..i changed the universal join crosses but the sound remains. will have to check oil and pinion bearings.

💥Grinding is different than whirring. I have a whirring noise that increases with speed in a 2003 Escalade. 139k miles. Could that also be the front diff.? I just changed the fluid for the first time and found a clump of shavings on the drain plug magnet. Thanks for the great video. 🤟🏼

No mechanics where interested in opening it up and rebuilding it so I bought a used unit from an auto salvage yard for $800 and my regular mechanic installed it for $300. It was much cheaper than having a remanufactured unit installed for $2,300. All is good so far and finally after many years it’s quiet again. 🤟🏼

@@ajangel5703 A mechanic suggested a friction modifier fluid to add to it as an attempt to quiet it down. He said to drive it 50 miles and see if it helps. It did not do a thing. There are several bearings inside that can go bad sometimes which was my case and no fluids where going to quiet mine down. It’s kind of hard to describe the sound in words but I can mimic it with my mouth which won’t help here. lol. Try to hum with your mouth closed starting down low then going up in octaves. That muffled sound is sort of like what mine sounded like and the pitch went higher as I drove faster.

Is this referring to the low washing noise? I’ve been trying to determine some clanking on my ‘10 tundra and have no luck. Three years and four mechanics can’t give me a good idea. My rear diff is definitely getting worn but I can’t find anything online for the same noise. Press the gas one clank, let go, two clanks. Sometimes it ratchets. I joke that my truck wants to be a drummer too but hell....

I accidentally bumped the table and knocked the shims out of order. I contacted Icon and Scott emailed me the shim stack specs. I already had a digital caliper from Home Depot and was able to figure out the proper order. I finished rebuilding the 2.0 non-resi’s. Even though the set up is the similar, it wasn’t too bad. This video was a great help. Regarding the brass tap to get the collar off, the tool I found was a “face spanner wrench” made by OTC, which I got off amazon. It’s similar to the type of wrench that comes with an angle grinder, but this one is adjustable in width and post size. It was about $60, but it will be useful with Other automotive applications.

Mike Didier it’s a 4 wheel drive I changed the vaccum ball and it stopped i think I have a vaccum leak or the vaccum accuator is bad

I did not need to replace it. But there is a retaining clip and it is pressed in.

your 4 wheel drive activated, take it out of of 4x4 and the noise should go away

Cec LH his 4wd isn’t activated, the cv axles rotate with the wheels(they are splined to them thru the wheel bearings.
