As a Westerner now living full-time in Japan this event was instructive to me on several levels. On one hand I never knew if it might fully go out of control. It was scary. But was also aware that 95% of the people stuck in the streets were teenagers. Sometimes emotional but mostly well-behaved and tolerant. It was a big inconvenience. No unnecessary hostility aroused. (I imagined the same kind of thing in the US, and could easily picture punchings or knifings, anti-social behavior) in the end (45 minutes or so) police helped clear the streets and no one was harmed. The only ones that got medical care were a handful that freaked out, claustrophobia or emotional distress. Otherwise an amazing level of patience and cooperation. To an outsider like me, nothing short of amazing.

When I was 18, I was caught up in a similar crush at the entrance to a nightclub. We were immobilised for over at 90 minutes and my friend and I could easily have died that day. There was way more panicking, swaying and screaming. We were fighting to stay on our feet. I couldn't breath just watching this clip. I hope to never experience such a thing again!

when i was about 15 in 1979 I went to a major concert in Chicago. it was a multi-band concert like Aerosmith and Foreigner? it was about 9 or 10 am and the crowds were starting to push to get in for the noon concert. i also remember not being able to breathe. i did not know why these idiots were pushing to get in and the doors were not even open yet!!?!? . Thankfully after a few minutes, the pushing stopped but I for sure panicked. scary feeling. i can not imagine dying that way. and lots of people, sadly, HAVE.
