This guy is so cool to be on Johnny Carson, he didn't look nervous at all, and fit in just as well as the stars that went on Johnny's show. I wonder if Johnny kept in touch with him after getting to know him.

Loved the band before he left for the first time. David called him "the engine of the band". Marty Balin told me that the Airplane often dropped acid and played. He said that he would go out there and have no idea what the lyrics were to the song, but as they started playing it all came back to him.

😮 WOW! It is awesome to see someone captured a video from this small show that I was actually at. It was on their Unplugged Speed of Light Tour so it was more a folk show and not a “hits” show….although they did Hi Flyin’ Bird, Wooden Ships and Volunteers.I had known Grace was retired but never expected Signe would appear singing that night. I promoted three shows with them in 2008 and again in 2010 but by then it was Paul Kantner’s Jefferson Starship (Cathy Richardson was on vocals, Donnie Baldwin on drums, David Freiberg on bass, drums and guitar, Chris Smith on keys and John Ferenzick on guitar. Great group and great people. Have also seen Jack Cassidy several times recently with Hot Tuna. The best!

There was no connection between WRNR and the real WHFS at all (except Michael Buckley's "Voices of the Bay"), two different stations, two different names, two different dj staff. They were NEVER the same station. They "borrowed" the connection from their new owners. When I listened I heard MTV, not HFS, which was fine, but to now call it an extension of HFS is ridiculous. They immediately restricted DJ musical freedom. Fundamental on HFS before it's demise, by personal DJ choice, NRBQ, The Band, Michael Hurley, Jesse Colin Young, Tom Waits, Leo Kottke, Little Feat to name a few. (I cut my alternative teeth on HFS artists, and I'd bet no WRNR DJ even knows who those artists are, to this day. See, that's what makes a good DJ.) RNR playlist picked by record companies pushing their product. Heavy metal, not on WHFS on a regular basis. Pop rock not on WHFS on a regular basis. Never played mainstream. The whole idea was to NOT play that kind of stuff. However, we broke the hits before they were hits. Springsteen was an unknown until HFS. You sully the name HFS by implying that HFS was "just another radio station." Video killed the radio star, that's for sure. You can't replace Beethoven, Bach, Mozart. And why would you want to? Good music is born everyday, and it's the job of a great radio station to find it, and let their listeners hear it. I remember when part-time DJ Steve Lorber played Squeeze (a rising British group) for the first time ever on HFS one Saturday. These are memories I will always cherish.

The real Linda who was a keyboard player & said she would still like to make music with David LaF & was living in Seattle... OR - the other one who gets to say "No, that wasn't me. That's a different Linda: she was in the actual Group w/ Pattie Santos, et al & before Fred Webb- Keys & Tom Fowler- Bass instead of Mitchell Holman - nice guys both of them but Tom went to Zappa & played w/The 'Grandemothers' after the Family threatened to sue them for a billing as 'Original Mothers'- w/Don Preston, Bunk Gardner, Jimmy Carl Black, etc. They were forced to sign a letter for the Family of the 'Genius' who smoked 4± packs daily & exposed every musician to smoke - at no extra charge- saying they meant no offense or that they'd tried to 'blemisb' his Godly name -Frank. "That fkg letter! If we hadn't signed that it would have cost us $60,000 (in legal fees to fight it) ! Frank's apparently still alive and a bigger 'GENIUS' since his death was announced. Erroneously? A different subject.Tom Fowler was a nice guy as was Mitchell Holman & that Choice Quality Stuff Lp is at least as good as the first two.

Tom O'Neill really blew this wide open. His book Chaos spells out how the hippie movement itself was an MK Ultra op to discredit the anti-Vietnam war movement. They literally operated the clinic at Haight-Ashbury and several of the key houses where LSD was being distributed for free. JRE has an excellent episode where Joe pretty much lets Tom talk the whole time and it's extremely engaging. Tom is a respected investigative journalist who solely worked on this for FORTY years.
