Jim Chandler - Rock Your Best Vocals
Jim Chandler - Rock Your Best Vocals
Hi, I'm Jim Chandler, and welcome to my KZread channel.
I help dedicated male rock singers to sing better faster so they can improve their voice and sing with more power and confidence through optimised training of body and mind through private sessions and transformational online courses
I started Rock Your Best Vocals to share everything I've learned over 30+ years as a professional vocalist, and over 20+years as a professional vocal coach. For me, there has been a LOT of trial and error on the way, and my goal is to help people avoid the errors I suffered from singing incorrectly.
From my experience I know it can seem out of reach or daunting to get a vocal coach, but until you do, you are 'searching around in the dark' for what works and likely damaging your voice in the process.
So to help you, it is with my utmost integrity that I share all my best tips to sing with power confidently and safely in my private sessions and online courses.

I reach here all the way from AGT !😊
Wow you got a bonjovi kinda tone.. nice tutorial 🤝😁
Steve Perry, Freddie Mercury, Bruno Mars, 3 of the greatest singers of all time.
He was 18yo when he recorded Begging, now he's 25 and despite the fact he was already a good singer, I think he got better and better, his voice and technique have improved immensely. Also he's a smart singer, using his voice like a musical instrument and doing plenty of variations and adding clever details. Live he truly shine, he's basically better than the record every time.

Thank you for the lesson! You have a great voice. I tried singing it today and am now left with a sore throat. Haha. Can’t seem to land the “in the niiiight” or the peepooolaaaaahhhhh.” Haha. Maybe someday.
This was great, thanks
Wow, it seemed a little click baity but this legit works!
Thank you so much Jim!🤘🏻😎🔥 The fake-yawn-excercise always makes me yawn for real , our brains are so easily influenced 😅😂
Thanks for all you do Jim. Is this how Geoff tate gets that crying sound?
Thank you too! 😊Without asking him personally I would just be guessing but I would suspect so! 😎👍🏼
Can you do a long cold winter tutorial please
We got Bamboozled 😅
great vid, thanks!
You're welcome - Glad you liked it!
His surname sounds as thi norvigian
Hi can you record video about how to sing like joey tempest?
may the force be with your chords 🤟🏼

Hey Jim!! Hi from Buenos Aires🇦🇷
Hello Buenos Aires in the house - yeah!!! 🥰

Tried Ken tamplin, it was disappointing to say the least. You get better info from Jim’s free course. Bonus, he won’t charge 149 dollars to have the pleasure of signing up.
Wow, appreciate that! Sorry you were disappointed with Ken, but I'm super glad to hear that you like what I've put out. Thanks!
This is my favorite video! Your scream in the intro is so badass!
Haha Thanks! It's pretty simple when you know what to do, and I'm sure anyone can do it if they work at it 🤘🏼
Do you have any exercises or tips for achieving the opposite tone? I lost my voice several months ago after a cold, and ever since, I've had a breathier tone than before. I'd say i've recovered 90-95%, but I'm still hearing a slight hissing sound, especially in head voice. Should I be worried about vocal damage? Or could this be solely due to weakened musculature after a few months of minimal use?
First off, I have to say I'm not a doctor so anything I say will be from experience, NOT medical advice. If you are concerned about vocal damage, I would recommend seeing an ENT. In my experience, prolonged (over)use of the false folds have made my 'head voice' a bit more 'raspy' but I have also found that I can clean it up by using a more 'open throat' approach (think relaxed throat - like when you yawn). I went through a lot of what you are talking about, so during my recovery I documented everything and created a course called "Rapid Vocal Transformation" (because I needed my voice back FAST to perform so I could pay the bills)
Thanks man I'm going to try these techniques! The scream is hard to do right 😂
Thank you! I'm sure you can do it, just keep working on it!
You Rock man!
Thank you, much appreciated!
If we get more abstract about it, your initial assessment that he is closed and airy, add to that a dome soft palate to create the resonator, and maybe we know why it wore him out eventually. Prime Steve sounds unbelievable, light yet string, so flexible, but it was a Faustian bargain. I wonder how others who do sound like him fair singing his material over time.
Wow appreciate your thoughts on this! It's hard to say for sure without hearing it directly from him (sometimes singers aren't even conscious of what causes the damage - hence why they keep on the path to damaging it without thought).
Very good video! I think she didn't follow a special technique but just used her natural sexiness in her voice and played with it. But for those who can't do that naturally, this is a very good tutorial 👍👍👍
Awesome piece -- thank you so much! Loved singing along with you two....
Oh awesome! I love that you sang along WITH me! 😊👍🏼
Man I can sound exactly like Bryan at a low volume, but it's because I'm only using false chords. As soon as I try and put some power behind it and engage a little more chest support the rasp is gone and I make that whiney sequeezed sound like Axl as opposed to the smooth rasp ... how?
It will just take practice to use false folds with more volume. Much of it is down to support. If you haven’t already, sign up to my free course: 🔥🔥🔥 Singing Support Secrets (FREE Course!): courses.rockyourbestvocals.com/support
@@RockYourBestVocals Thanks dude, but I've tried it all. I'm a somewhat retired pro anyways. My band was signed to a major, toured a bunch, etc. I'm a competent singer and have plenty of support to push my head voice -- the issue is how to get that crunchy fry sound WITH volume?
@@yesyesnonono what I hear you saying is you have your support in top shape but can’t get volume, right? For me - it’s down to support because (for me) when I put more support into that sound it gets louder, so I believe it’s all down to support. 🤷🏼♂️🤔
@@RockYourBestVocals Thanks for the tip.
@@RockYourBestVocals I have strong support to blast head voice, but as I add volume, any fry/distortion goes away and I get more of that Axel Rose air-raid siren 80s cock-rock sound (which I loathe), rather than the raspy texture that singers like Bryan / John Foggerty have -- which I can replicate perfectly at low volumes since I'm only using false chords I gather. My question is, should i be expecting to achieve volume by doing what already sounds good -- only with more support (i..e using false chords) or find a way to blend in my chest power and someone how retain that raspy tone....? thx again
Not Unique? Ok your opinion... For me, His voice is THE coolest and ear warming, also unique... I don't care if my voice is gone, i just want to sound like him
Opinions can also be temporary. I’ve been known to update my opinions (as everyone is entitled to) so I would love to know your favorite song by him so I can really listen close and maybe change my previous opinion 🤷🏼♂️
@@RockYourBestVocals it's more of preference... I loved his voice the very 1st time
By his comment I don't think he was triggered at all. Just shared his insight on the issue. I think eventually the student have to feel these things out based on the quides of teachers. To understand grit for example I had to watch four different YT teachers. You can't have a real back and forth when you watch online tutorials so I think solving this issue is not even up to the content creators, but the person who wishes to learn singing from youtube videos. You have to listen to different people, try it out, and decide for yourself.
OK, I got my breath support course! Thanks!
Great! Hope you like it!
I have not gotten your breath support program yet, yet this video makes it look like you've already released it. I got a "confirmation" email which I responded to and since then I've gotten nothing.
Ok I see from your other comment that you have so hope this comment is outdated and you have actually received it! Lemmeno!
@@RockYourBestVocals Correct, I got it!
Please
Can you make a video on how to sing like George Harrison please?
Sure thing! Great suggestion I’ve put it on my list! 😊👍🏼
I have found the pushing and pulling at the same time while envisioning the air "coming up" like what you teach to help me more than anything else.
Whew 😅 thank goodness it’s not just me going crazy 🤪
@@RockYourBestVocals well, with that said... we're all crazy! LOL, no I have connected before by pushing down (bearing) and all it did was create tension. It doesn't take a lot of effort with the way I found when taking the Rapid Vocal Transformation course as well as the Support Secrets. Great information in there! Anyway, what I'm finding is keeping the ribs open, and using a slight push down below the naval while also pulling it up and in at the same time. It's weird, but it creates the resistance needed along with the "lean" on the chest and using the inhalare (sp?) to get the best tone for myself. :)
Belly in on the inhale (opens up the rib cage and you'll instantly feel your back expand), sing against the navel. I don't feel like it's the solution for everyone, but it's the one method that ever felt comfortable for me. Maybe it's just my physiology.
Agree 👍🏼 it may not be that way for everyone and appreciate that I’m not alone in the belly-in camp!
Jim I’m signed up for both courses “rapid vocal transformation” and “kick start your vocals”. Should I complete the kickstart first or just stick with the rapid vocal? 🤘🏻Thanks

Can you please teach me how to sing like Alice Cooper song poison please?
too bad i have this spine in the way
Haha darn spine! 😂
Lol
Layne really was at his peak on the Facelift album. Drugs and balls to the wall belting got to his voice.
Also helps to have really awesome effects.
Mr. Jim, COVID was very harsh all the way around. My battle to get back was 3 months. Scratching and clawing my way back, sometimes one “squeezing the cat” note after another. The end result was me finding a LOT more tools in the toolbox, different things I found and really opening up a distinct style all my own. Your positivity and work ethic showed me the way. Right on bro, thank you
Thank you for sharing your story! I thought I was the only one “squeezing the cat” I used to hate on myself and get so down thinking “how can I coach when I can’t even fix my OWN voice?” That’s how I created the “Rapid Vocal Transformation” course out of sheer NEED to get back to performance-level and so I could help others do the same. Really appreciate you! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 🙏🏽😊💕
These days, my education is taking priority. As a sophomore with an Entertainment Business Management major, I’m picking up the business side of being in a band trying to eat and make the mortgage. It’ll all come together in 2026. You’ll notice i didn’t say the name of the school I’m attending, I’m not here selling anything yet. Get happy all you musicians! It’s work but if you don’t love it, then it’s a hobby.
When you sang “claustrophobic” with the distortion from Before I Forget, that sounded just like him and impressed me. I’m a singer myself who sings Slipknot songs regularly and am looking to try and achieve this sound specifically in before i forget in the verses. Do you have any advice on how to get that sound?
That requires great support and I have a FREE course that will help you - you can get that here: courses.rockyourbestvocals.com/support The distortion part is separate but once you master support the distortion is easier
