Cal, can you please be a bit briefer? You're always accused of being long winded, and I'm afraid there's a bit of truth to that 😔

I think Cal gives great advice but it can be jarring to listen to sometimes as it feels like the advice is aimed at privileged 20-something-year-olds with health insurance, college degrees and wealthy families. What about older people with less privilege trying to turn their lives around after working hard for decades and having little to show for it (including little self esteem or hope for the future). The advice is just as relevant, but the delivery would be different. It's just too painful to listen to this sometimes.

Question, if you are aged 35 and working at a dead end job but really need to make ends meet because you need to support your family, how can I change my life? I studied Digital marketing and I am still busy paying off the student loan I took out, honestly I like the fact that you don't sugarcoat things and you break it down piece by piece and remind us of the reality vs dream or ideas.. I would appreciate feedback

@boogerman9047 (if that is your real name... 😉). Firstly props to you for doing what you need to, to support your family. That's important. Go you! In answer to your question, I would suggest reading Cal's other book So Good That They Can't Ignore You. It's notionally about Why We Shouldn't Follow Our Passion but really is about finding what you (and only you) have to offer and making that something compelling to others. It really helped me think about who I am and what I have to give to the world. Good luck. You can do this.

I've now read two of your books - Deep Work and Digital Minimalism. Great job! There is a lot wisdom in those books; lot's of it matches up with my own experience. It is refreshing to here someone value the idea of becoming intrinically competant in the everyday aspects of their lives before launching off into some grand plan. Looking forward to more from you.

40:45 underrated reminder for all parents/would be parents. Being a parent is a lifelong commitment. Generations of folks get into it woefully underprepared internally. The suffering that ensues really spills over all and we leave, have left the children, future generations, others in society the burden of dealing with the mess

You made this video for me, specifically, didn’t you? 😬😬 Or maybe it’s a social commentary on the “gifted and talented” curse of 90s kids? We were told that we were destined for “big things.” Anything short of that is failure. After living 15 years in the grand goal strategy (and failing) I’ve recently come to many of your conclusions organically. Thanks for sharing your insights and validating my suspicions.

If anyone sees this and would like to give it a try, I recommend trying turning your phone to grayscale. All phones have this setting buried somewhere; on Android, pixel 3xl, for example, you can set your "bedtime mode" to just be grayscale, and then it's on your drop-down menu. With my phone gray, it is significantly less exciting and it makes not using it to entertain myself much easier.

Just finished the book, checked in here 'intentionally' to see if Cal and a video on it. The book is great, lots of rich content. This video only hits on a few points; it does not do the book justice. I recommend reading the book. It is filled with not only solid arguments and data to support the arguments, but also lots of actionable suggestions and ideas. Like "Deep Work," it is well worth the time to read and digest the author's ideas and insights. Even when you do not agree with him, Cal makes it worth taking the time to understand his point of view.

I am using KZread and Facebook under the same dept, wrestling and Brazilian jiujitsu martial arts, PERIOD. And I make sure to dive in deep zoom in one one move at a time like a doctor looking for that section of the human heart to operate and patch. Most of my exchanges online are done exclusively with wrestling and BJJ practitioners. Then, few of my online visits are for news cause I dont live on a deserted island and need to know what is going on in my country. Thus, I saved my life energy by doing this.

Immediately after finishing this video, I got an ad about making money on Instagram. I'm convinced that social media is a trap that many of us can't seem to break free of. Technology gives us headaches and also anxiety as mentioned in the video. People often joke about "touching grass," but that's exactly what we need to do. Why should we pretend to live life when we can live it for real? I love technology. But after spending my whole life letting it consume me, I realized that it was too much. Anything you expose yourself to for long periods of time has consequences (recreational drugs, alcohol, social media and other technologies, etc.) Some things are bad no matter what, while others are bad if you participate in the activity repeatedly.

I know the answer without watching the video. Work sucks. Its not even anywhere close to just "doing hard tasks" being a problem. Nobody gives me tasks to do, i have to figure them out and then do them. Your suggestion of working in a coffee shop is also terrible. What do you think the consequences to your health and posture would be.

VERY helpful! I have all these. Thank you for the practical solutions. The way you describe the need to look at the phone 3:45, describes how my brain has been working my whole life: this, over here, that, what’s this, over there, that, now this again… they said it’s ad/hd, but now everyone is experiencing it with the smartphones. I keep my phone plugged in more than half the day. I’m a stay at home-schooling mom. But we can not afford rent and bills anymore. So I need to get to working from home as well. I have set up an eBay corner, to get started. I just keep fighting myself to get started. For years! Just before this video popped up, I said “!!Who am I fighting, anyway?!! I want to do this! Why can I not get myself to get going?!? I’m going to remember again, to do just a little bit, and for just 20 minutes. I could do almost anything if I know it’s over soon, and it’s painless really. Okay. Phone plugged in, getting motivated… 🤔 I could keep making this comment longer. I have deep procrastination as a coping mechanism, it was a default for never getting anything I asked for growing up. I just put off my heart. Anything that could make me feel better, I can do or have that in the future. Putting off the heart. Its long lasting side effects I’m experiencing are what you call deep procrastination. I have become proficient at stalling on what I want, to maintain the peace of the group. Deep procrastination. That sounds like something I could work on. Because I’m exhibiting right now. 😅thank you for this insight. Thank you YT for continuing to help me do better! Actually planning something for the near future is something that has always helped me stay motivated! Thank you for reminding me of that!!!

If you stumble upon this comment, and working from home, and you have all of these symptoms and nothing seems to work, here's my solid advice: Just go to the office. Don't think of it as saving money by staying at home. Think of it as an investment for your career. You may be saving money by staying at home, but you're definitely not progressing your career either. Just compare your productivity when working from home vs. working in the office.
