This video wasn't trying to show the entire installation process. That said, I do suggest you use a step drill bit for drilling the thru-hull.

I really like you ur design and installation. I have a new 2023 tandem I took delivery at the end of nice weather last fall. I would love to install the bilge pump system on my island. Excellent video. Hope you don't mind my comments but here is a bit more info. Amazon $9 QWORK Aluminum T Track, 2 Pack 12 Inch (Mar 2024) Way cheaper than the Yak Attack Equalizing washers are a great idea. I used one $8 rubber automotive muffler hanger & used the ends with the holes. Corrects angle issue and absorbs vibration from outboard. $40 for 2x2 aluminum tube 4' length 1/8 wall All said it can be done for $60 Not hijacking your vid sir but just letting people know. To everyone else if you want it perfect build exactly as the vid recommends. It's pretty damn good.

Do you have a plan to hand pump the water out while still on the water, if the bilge pump stops working? I was thinking of a cone to put around the hatch to stop waves from splashing in and pumping out periodically. In extreme cases, maybe an inflatable mattress that is inflated under the boat then hand pump out the water. Another option is to fill the boat with “ping pong balls” basically anything that is extremely buoyant to take up space and negate the need to pump water out.

I do have a hand pump that I take on longer trips, but I can tell you from experience it's pretty useless in a rolling ocean. If you plan to put stuff inside the hull, just make sure it doesn't conflict with the rudder lines.

I find the leak completely acceptible considering the boat is designed and built by Hobie only to Categoy D ratings: "CATEGORY D - INLAND OR SHELTERED COASTAL WATERS This rating is for boats in small lakes and rivers with winds to Force 4 and significant wave heights to 18 inches." It's just that many of us use the boat in conditions for which is was never designed, including bashing through big waves in the ocean. You can minimize the leaks - and I have - but it's unlikely you'll eliminate them. Also, from a safety standpoint, it's a good idea to have an automatic bilge pump in case a new leak springs up.

Nice video. I have 2 older Adventure Islands (a 2013 and a 2014), which I mostly sail in NorCal (the Monterey Bay, in particular). What I found works well on the round hatches is to wrap the rubber o-ring in teflon tape (the same stuff that plumbers use). That allows the o-rings to resist twisting, so that they can seal properly, and it has eliminated any signifiant leakage from those hatches on my boats (with the added benefit that they open and close easily and smoothly). For the front hatch, I use a ring made out of 3/4" silicone tubing, which goes in the channel that the hatch rests on. The outside edge of the top hatch presses into the silicone rubber tubing and makes a tight seal, even when the boat flexes (as it does quite extensively in rough seas). I'd wager that your front hatch will still take on water. If you put a camera inside when sailing in rough conditions, you'll see that the the flex in the boat creates a lot of suction around the front hatch, and it'll literally suck the water in, unless you have a very tight seal.

All great ideas! I did manage to limit the water intrusion but I also decided it would be safer to install an automatic (electric) bilge pump. I thought a hand bilge pump would work in an emergency but in practice it's almost impossible to hand pump when the boat is pounding about in the ocean. I feel an electric bilge pump is mandatory any time we exceed the boats actual Category D rating.

That's a nice setup. I don't have a TI, but I do have 2 AIs and sail quite a bit, some in fairly rough conditions. In my experience, if you are getting a lot of water inside, it's coming thru the front hatch. There are a lot of ways to reduce (if not eliminate) the water coming thru the hatch.

My goal is to explore Painted Cave on Santa Cruz, stay the night then head back. This is a great time to go over too, weather permitting. Thanks again.

It really is a fun trip. This is our second trip. The first one was quite a bit tougher with rougher seas. Overnight is a definite as it's too far, even with good wind, to go out and back in one day. It can be done, but it would be a long, butt-killing journey. I hope you have a motor.

Hi Tom this is a good video with a lot of good detail and I have a few boats spanning the entirety of the evolution of the adventure and tandem Island Boats I've gotta 07, a 11, a13, a19, and a 2020. I think one of the problems is even with the several redesigns Hobie has not addressed this problem. If anything the leaky hatches have gotten worse from my experience with the boats I have over almost the entirety the evolution the older style t-handle 8" round hatch seems to be much more Rugged and water tight the newer Oval handle round hatch the large hatch up on the bow seems to have some design flaws that they have failed to address in 15 years and least 3 upgrades to the boats. If this had been produced by an automaker, it would have resulted in. A very large class action suit and recall these hatches The design and insulation of these hatches is negligent for even the very low sea state that hobie recommend. Lakes bays and sounds I've seen 5 and 6 foot chop and lakes base and sounds all over the world being as professional Mariner for over 40 years as well as a part-time kayak guide in my youth I can assure you that there are several kayak companies that have been able to consistently produce boats and hatches that don't leak necky and Wilderness system plenty of others and as far as sit on tops Ocean Kayak made very good watertight hatches there is no reason other than not having the will to do so and making the boats cheaper and cheaper with each iteration in design and material. My 2020 Tl is the worse built boat in my fleet none of my hatches closed properly and as far as deck fittings like cleats the materials used in the bungees so poor quality I can see why they had to change their logo there must be something up at the corporate level that they've decided to bake the boat so cheap that it might actually be a better option to buy one of the Chinese close don't get me wrong I've been sailing Hobie cats since I was 5 love them I built all the Hobie 21 for the first ultimate Yacht Race when I was in high school in Corpus Christi I'm very much a Hobie person and I love these boats that's why I have 5 of them but I've had to go through and rebuild each one to bring it up to a minimum standard for what I would consider a moderate Seas state. Very good writeup. I've got 2 Hobie Adventure Islands (a 2014 that I bought used in 2015 and a 2013 that I built up from just the hull), and my wife thinks it's crazy to have more than one, so I'll have to show her your post. My claim to fame is that I believe I've nearly perfected my custom jib. In any case, I too have gone from an ultimate Hobie fanboy to being a bit disappointed in the company...

I have a 2007. I’ve never quite understood the AI. I take on too much water no matter. Plus in the cockpit the water keeps up flowing in from the pedal drive hole.

I have 2 AIs, and if you are getting a lot of water infiltration, it's almost certainly coming in thru the front hatch. There are a lot of ways to get a better seal on the front hatch. Search on the Hobie forum and you'll find a lot of info (I'm NowhereMan, in case you want to see my solution, which is particularly simple).

The manual pump is the problem. In rough seas, it's difficult to open a hatch to insert the pump (water coming in hatch as you are pumping it out...at least while moving). I printed a pump fitting to mount to the deck, with a TPU cap and below deck I have a 1" hose running to the bottom of the boat and keep the pump strapped to the aka for access. The top of the pump port (it is lined with a tpu gasket glued in for a snug fit on the pump) is just a friction fit, hold the pump to it and pump. Can pump without opening any hatch now. I am also equipped with an automatic bilge. Ain't 3d printers great?

I sold them for a period of time, but due to several factors, I stopped. One reason I stopped making them was that I used top-shelf materials, and the sewing was relatively complex, so it was hard to offer them at what most people felt was a reasonable price. But the bigger reason was that, after using them for a while, I came to realize that it's better to spend your money on good kayaking clothes rather than spray skirts. These boats are a wet ride no matter how you slice it, even with spray skirts. In my mind, it's best to assume you'll get wet and dress accordingly. The other thing I highly recommend is placing anyone you like into the back seat where it's drier.

Yeah, I can appreciate that with the cost of everything going up recently. I’ve been sailing a TI the last year and got pretty spoiled with how dry (relatively speaking) the rear seat is in that. Now when I’m sailing the AI I’m remembering how wet it is, and thought the spray skirt might help some. I’ve got some decent splash gear, but even then in the AI when you’re taking splashes to the face it eventually gets in through the neck, plus my eyes will start burning from the salt. Are there any disadvantages to the spray skirt besides cost? Doesn’t look like it would add too much time to rigging it?

@rjl2001 I see - essentially, you're trying to limit the waterboarding. Regarding the cost, I used actual trampoline material, but there are cheaper materials that would probably work just fine. I don't have dimensions on an Adventure. You wouldn't happen to be in Southern California, would you? If so, I could just modify my skirt to fit your boat and sell that to you.

@@maxwellmark yes, it's very sturdy. I made it because I was concerned about how exposed I was while moving back and forth from the rear seat while solo on the ocean. The railing provides a sturdy place to grab onto while moving about the boat. My wife also appreciates it on the days she sails with me.

Not sure how you installed the square tubing over the mounting track. Did you slide them on and somehow lock in place?

The square tubing attaches to the YakAttack track using the track nuts (see materials list @ 5:46.) If you look @ 4:13 you will see an end-view of what that looks like. The red nail polish is there to give me a visual clue if anything has moved (it never has.) In order to tighten the bolts for the track nuts, you'll need to drill access holes through the square tubing, as shown at 3:42. Good luck!

Excellent summary and good solutions to a well know leak weakness with the hobie TI. I can share that Hobie completely redesigned the three circular hatches for the Hobie 2022 TI. The front hatch was not changed. I can share that during intensive 40 days of sailing in the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Keys, including rough waves the 2022 TI was air tight with no water leaks - which mazzed me! Excellent stuff Tom. I pulled the rear hatch from my ‘17 and added a LOT of sealant where the outer ring meets the hull. Seemed to “fix” mine, also, you can force a length of PVC at the leading edge of the front hatch, which will prevent flexing of the nose and help seal it. Thanks for posting.

All good and well done BUT... the Hobbie Tandem Island is completely out of balance. Hobbie simply "stretched" an Adventure Island for fitting the second seat, NOT realising that the balance is offset 😳 to the sterne. Any additional weight will push the sterne under water including the holes for the steering cables, as well as the hatch. The additional water stream will add additional pressure and makes sure that even more water will creap into the hull. Not to mention the weight shift with the installed engine. My most wasted money ever.

That's too bad you've had that experience. I've seen no imbalance, water coming in the cable channels or water coming in the hatch. I mostly don't use the motor and it sits quietly in case I need it. Never had a problem.

I completely disagree with this comment. I’m going on five years with a similar set up on my T.I. It is the best mod you could ever do to the boat. On my previous solo Adventure Island, it was easy to sink the stern until the rudder lines were submerged, but it is absolutely a non issue on the T.I.

I have the problem with the stern sinking as well on a T.I. I’m 200 lbs. I’ve seen some people use a second bar over the top and I wonder if this may change the wake aspects a bit to reduce that. Or somehow tweak a trim angle somehow to prevent this?

Adjust the tilt angle of the engine. This will lift the stern when power is applied.

I feel your pain.... Let me put it in short. Hobbie Tandem SUCK in sailing "performance" if we can even say that WITHOUT a jib. The additional jib makes it a bit better (but still ridiculous low) besides the cluster sheet/line fuck. Main cause is how cramped inn we have to sit. The limited body moving allowance, missing blocks and not easy access to everything turns everything to the worse. I am still not convinced, that a Hobbie is half the money worth, I spent on that thing. A fun little "floating device" for sure but ABSOLUTELY NOT useful for people who THINK about Sailing. Would I buy one again???? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Tell us how you really feel, haha! I love the Hobie, but it's a sailing kayak, nothing more. With that in mind, I think it's a fantastic boat. Easy to learn, easy to sail and capable. "I yam what I yam!" - says the Hobie TI.

Nice set up. I would have run the discharge thru the hatch as it would be easy to replace the hatch if you wanted to remove it and get everything back to stock
That's a good suggestion. I considered it at the time, but opted not to since I'd already done quite a few mods to the boat.
Do you have a plan to hand pump the water out while still on the water, if the bilge pump stops working? I was thinking of a cone to put around the hatch to stop waves from splashing in and pumping out periodically. In extreme cases, maybe an inflatable mattress that is inflated under the boat then hand pump out the water. Another option is to fill the boat with “ping pong balls” basically anything that is extremely buoyant to take up space and negate the need to pump water out.
I do have a hand pump that I take on longer trips, but I can tell you from experience it's pretty useless in a rolling ocean. If you plan to put stuff inside the hull, just make sure it doesn't conflict with the rudder lines.
I wouldn't have accepted it leaking in the first place. The leak is unacceptable, but surely correctable.
I find the leak completely acceptible considering the boat is designed and built by Hobie only to Categoy D ratings: "CATEGORY D - INLAND OR SHELTERED COASTAL WATERS This rating is for boats in small lakes and rivers with winds to Force 4 and significant wave heights to 18 inches." It's just that many of us use the boat in conditions for which is was never designed, including bashing through big waves in the ocean. You can minimize the leaks - and I have - but it's unlikely you'll eliminate them. Also, from a safety standpoint, it's a good idea to have an automatic bilge pump in case a new leak springs up.
Nice video. I have 2 older Adventure Islands (a 2013 and a 2014), which I mostly sail in NorCal (the Monterey Bay, in particular). What I found works well on the round hatches is to wrap the rubber o-ring in teflon tape (the same stuff that plumbers use). That allows the o-rings to resist twisting, so that they can seal properly, and it has eliminated any signifiant leakage from those hatches on my boats (with the added benefit that they open and close easily and smoothly). For the front hatch, I use a ring made out of 3/4" silicone tubing, which goes in the channel that the hatch rests on. The outside edge of the top hatch presses into the silicone rubber tubing and makes a tight seal, even when the boat flexes (as it does quite extensively in rough seas). I'd wager that your front hatch will still take on water. If you put a camera inside when sailing in rough conditions, you'll see that the the flex in the boat creates a lot of suction around the front hatch, and it'll literally suck the water in, unless you have a very tight seal.
All great ideas! I did manage to limit the water intrusion but I also decided it would be safer to install an automatic (electric) bilge pump. I thought a hand bilge pump would work in an emergency but in practice it's almost impossible to hand pump when the boat is pounding about in the ocean. I feel an electric bilge pump is mandatory any time we exceed the boats actual Category D rating.
That's a nice setup. I don't have a TI, but I do have 2 AIs and sail quite a bit, some in fairly rough conditions. In my experience, if you are getting a lot of water inside, it's coming thru the front hatch. There are a lot of ways to reduce (if not eliminate) the water coming thru the hatch.

It really is a fun trip. This is our second trip. The first one was quite a bit tougher with rougher seas. Overnight is a definite as it's too far, even with good wind, to go out and back in one day. It can be done, but it would be a long, butt-killing journey. I hope you have a motor.

Hi Tom this is a good video with a lot of good detail and I have a few boats spanning the entirety of the evolution of the adventure and tandem Island Boats I've gotta 07, a 11, a13, a19, and a 2020. I think one of the problems is even with the several redesigns Hobie has not addressed this problem. If anything the leaky hatches have gotten worse from my experience with the boats I have over almost the entirety the evolution the older style t-handle 8" round hatch seems to be much more Rugged and water tight the newer Oval handle round hatch the large hatch up on the bow seems to have some design flaws that they have failed to address in 15 years and least 3 upgrades to the boats. If this had been produced by an automaker, it would have resulted in. A very large class action suit and recall these hatches The design and insulation of these hatches is negligent for even the very low sea state that hobie recommend. Lakes bays and sounds I've seen 5 and 6 foot chop and lakes base and sounds all over the world being as professional Mariner for over 40 years as well as a part-time kayak guide in my youth I can assure you that there are several kayak companies that have been able to consistently produce boats and hatches that don't leak necky and Wilderness system plenty of others and as far as sit on tops Ocean Kayak made very good watertight hatches there is no reason other than not having the will to do so and making the boats cheaper and cheaper with each iteration in design and material. My 2020 Tl is the worse built boat in my fleet none of my hatches closed properly and as far as deck fittings like cleats the materials used in the bungees so poor quality I can see why they had to change their logo there must be something up at the corporate level that they've decided to bake the boat so cheap that it might actually be a better option to buy one of the Chinese close don't get me wrong I've been sailing Hobie cats since I was 5 love them I built all the Hobie 21 for the first ultimate Yacht Race when I was in high school in Corpus Christi I'm very much a Hobie person and I love these boats that's why I have 5 of them but I've had to go through and rebuild each one to bring it up to a minimum standard for what I would consider a moderate Seas state. Very good writeup. I've got 2 Hobie Adventure Islands (a 2014 that I bought used in 2015 and a 2013 that I built up from just the hull), and my wife thinks it's crazy to have more than one, so I'll have to show her your post. My claim to fame is that I believe I've nearly perfected my custom jib. In any case, I too have gone from an ultimate Hobie fanboy to being a bit disappointed in the company...

I have a 2007. I’ve never quite understood the AI. I take on too much water no matter. Plus in the cockpit the water keeps up flowing in from the pedal drive hole.
I have 2 AIs, and if you are getting a lot of water infiltration, it's almost certainly coming in thru the front hatch. There are a lot of ways to get a better seal on the front hatch. Search on the Hobie forum and you'll find a lot of info (I'm NowhereMan, in case you want to see my solution, which is particularly simple).

The manual pump is the problem. In rough seas, it's difficult to open a hatch to insert the pump (water coming in hatch as you are pumping it out...at least while moving). I printed a pump fitting to mount to the deck, with a TPU cap and below deck I have a 1" hose running to the bottom of the boat and keep the pump strapped to the aka for access. The top of the pump port (it is lined with a tpu gasket glued in for a snug fit on the pump) is just a friction fit, hold the pump to it and pump. Can pump without opening any hatch now. I am also equipped with an automatic bilge. Ain't 3d printers great?

Any chance you could make one of these spray skirts for a 2015+ Adventure Island? I finally decided I should try a spray skirt only to discover Kayak Bob recently quit selling them.
I sold them for a period of time, but due to several factors, I stopped. One reason I stopped making them was that I used top-shelf materials, and the sewing was relatively complex, so it was hard to offer them at what most people felt was a reasonable price. But the bigger reason was that, after using them for a while, I came to realize that it's better to spend your money on good kayaking clothes rather than spray skirts. These boats are a wet ride no matter how you slice it, even with spray skirts. In my mind, it's best to assume you'll get wet and dress accordingly. The other thing I highly recommend is placing anyone you like into the back seat where it's drier.
Yeah, I can appreciate that with the cost of everything going up recently. I’ve been sailing a TI the last year and got pretty spoiled with how dry (relatively speaking) the rear seat is in that. Now when I’m sailing the AI I’m remembering how wet it is, and thought the spray skirt might help some. I’ve got some decent splash gear, but even then in the AI when you’re taking splashes to the face it eventually gets in through the neck, plus my eyes will start burning from the salt. Are there any disadvantages to the spray skirt besides cost? Doesn’t look like it would add too much time to rigging it?
@rjl2001 I see - essentially, you're trying to limit the waterboarding. Regarding the cost, I used actual trampoline material, but there are cheaper materials that would probably work just fine. I don't have dimensions on an Adventure. You wouldn't happen to be in Southern California, would you? If so, I could just modify my skirt to fit your boat and sell that to you.
Please show your handrail system, that could be a very useful addition for a friend of mine.
I'll try to do a video on the rail system in the future. Basically, it's just lengths of 1" SS tubing cut as needed. It'll be a while before I get to the video, but I'll put it on my calendar!

@@maxwellmark yes, it's very sturdy. I made it because I was concerned about how exposed I was while moving back and forth from the rear seat while solo on the ocean. The railing provides a sturdy place to grab onto while moving about the boat. My wife also appreciates it on the days she sails with me.

Not sure how you installed the square tubing over the mounting track. Did you slide them on and somehow lock in place?
The square tubing attaches to the YakAttack track using the track nuts (see materials list @ 5:46.) If you look @ 4:13 you will see an end-view of what that looks like. The red nail polish is there to give me a visual clue if anything has moved (it never has.) In order to tighten the bolts for the track nuts, you'll need to drill access holes through the square tubing, as shown at 3:42. Good luck!

Excellent summary and good solutions to a well know leak weakness with the hobie TI. I can share that Hobie completely redesigned the three circular hatches for the Hobie 2022 TI. The front hatch was not changed. I can share that during intensive 40 days of sailing in the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Keys, including rough waves the 2022 TI was air tight with no water leaks - which mazzed me! Excellent stuff Tom. I pulled the rear hatch from my ‘17 and added a LOT of sealant where the outer ring meets the hull. Seemed to “fix” mine, also, you can force a length of PVC at the leading edge of the front hatch, which will prevent flexing of the nose and help seal it. Thanks for posting.
All good and well done BUT... the Hobbie Tandem Island is completely out of balance. Hobbie simply "stretched" an Adventure Island for fitting the second seat, NOT realising that the balance is offset 😳 to the sterne. Any additional weight will push the sterne under water including the holes for the steering cables, as well as the hatch. The additional water stream will add additional pressure and makes sure that even more water will creap into the hull. Not to mention the weight shift with the installed engine. My most wasted money ever.
That's too bad you've had that experience. I've seen no imbalance, water coming in the cable channels or water coming in the hatch. I mostly don't use the motor and it sits quietly in case I need it. Never had a problem.

I completely disagree with this comment. I’m going on five years with a similar set up on my T.I. It is the best mod you could ever do to the boat. On my previous solo Adventure Island, it was easy to sink the stern until the rudder lines were submerged, but it is absolutely a non issue on the T.I.
I have the problem with the stern sinking as well on a T.I. I’m 200 lbs. I’ve seen some people use a second bar over the top and I wonder if this may change the wake aspects a bit to reduce that. Or somehow tweak a trim angle somehow to prevent this?
Adjust the tilt angle of the engine. This will lift the stern when power is applied.

I feel your pain.... Let me put it in short. Hobbie Tandem SUCK in sailing "performance" if we can even say that WITHOUT a jib. The additional jib makes it a bit better (but still ridiculous low) besides the cluster sheet/line fuck. Main cause is how cramped inn we have to sit. The limited body moving allowance, missing blocks and not easy access to everything turns everything to the worse. I am still not convinced, that a Hobbie is half the money worth, I spent on that thing. A fun little "floating device" for sure but ABSOLUTELY NOT useful for people who THINK about Sailing. Would I buy one again???? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
Tell us how you really feel, haha! I love the Hobie, but it's a sailing kayak, nothing more. With that in mind, I think it's a fantastic boat. Easy to learn, easy to sail and capable. "I yam what I yam!" - says the Hobie TI.
