There definitely appears to be more detail in the X4 footage, BUT, it also appears to be exposed a bit lower. I have to wonder how much more detail would be visible with the extra contrast added via lower exposure on the X3. Also, you're shooting 60 FPS on the X4 , assuming this camera's encoder is bandwidth limited, you might get more detail per frame by shooting at 30 FPS. Can you do a side by side in sunlight with the X3 with say, -0.3 or so EV dialed in, leave the X4 at 0.0 EV, and shoot both at 30 FPS, export at 4k?

Sharpness setting? The 'low' setting on the X4 should only be used if you want it to look like an earlier model. Maybe upload one of your excellent comparisons showing a static shot of a detailed scene shot in each of the three sharpness settings in good light. But I am starting to wonder whether there is a problem with your particular X4. Search for an upload in the last few days shot in Venice, runs for about 18 mins, looks excellent.

The KZreadrs that show "best settings for your X4" seem to have differing opinions. Many say Low, so it can be sharpened later in an editor if needed, some say Medium. @@subethasoftware What worries me is that X4 low sharpness may be losing detail, permanently, which can't be recovered later in editing. That seemed to be what I saw in the one brief test I've seen on KZread. If that is true, it would be better to set it to medium in camera and soften it in editing, if desired. I know some videographers use low sharpness on every camera, but as there is so much AI processing going on inside the X4, it might not be the best choice - until someone proves that it is. The X4 has the plastic lens protector on in all of my videos, and none on the X3. I did this because 'it comes in the box" and the tutorial in the X4 on startup tells you how to install them, so I thought that was a fair comparison - X4 "as it is" versus X3. And, because I was afraid of messing up my new X4. I've already bonked it on a doorway because it's "just a bit taller" than I am used to. Weird.

So basically absolutely no reason to get an X4. On the X4, the colors are blown out, resolution isn't any better even at 4k. There does appear to be better IS or perspective correction, as when you rotate the X4 handles the shift better than the X3, but I feel like that's just a software thing. I am absolutely and completely unimpressed with the 4K output of this. Maybe it's just KZread compressing it? It looks terrible.

It's a newly added mode in a recent firmware of the X4 that claims to be 5.7K resolution but offer somehow improved image vs a normal 5.7K image. Insta360 says: "Close to 8K image-quality but with a smaller file size. 5.7K+ is not suitable in low light conditions." It takes up a middle ground of storage space between 8K and normal 5.7K and does not offer any frame rates about 30, just like the 8K setting.

Since 5.7K+ gives the "low light" warning, just like 8K, I think it must be doing something on the front end -- maybe recording the "8K" mode and downsizing in the camera or something? I sure wish they'd actually tell us what it does.

I just need to find it. During the initial launch there was a bunch of wild speculation about how they were doing this - including much that said it was just faking the upscale to 8K from the same image as the X3. Cameras need to have the same thing video projectors do - “native” specs. A projector capable of 1920x1080 just means it can accept that signal, but it might have a “native resolution” of 640x480 and is just downgrading the signal.

I have watched about 1000 x3 / x4 comparison videos - ok, 999 - and this is the first one where I can clearly see the resolution difference in every frame. Usually it shows with overhead cables and similar fine details, but here it can be seen throughout the shot. Great!

Thanks for taking time to leave this comment. When I watch the pros, they know how to do all the manual settings and such. I figure most folks will just turn it on and click record, so that's how I try to do these videos. It doesn't matter what the camera is capable of if I don't know how to make it do it :)

@@Ozpeter I just uploaded something that was done directly from the phone app. The desktop Insta360 Studio gives more export options. I wonder if anyone has done any comparisons on the export quality between mobile versus desktop. I may try that this morning. Our temperatures just dropped to near-freezing again so I don't really want to go outside for any walks or rides right now.

There does seem to be more lens flaring, but that may just be the lens protector on the X4.

@@subethasoftware It is the lens protector, remove it and you wont have flair.

Far better of an upgrade than I expected -- even after watching a lot of launch day videos. One thing I did not expect were all the new features in the firmware, and how slick/nice it has. It has tutorials that walk you through settings and such, and can "speak" what mode you are in or a countdown. Just lots of really good features. This is not the same camera as the previous generations.

Do we know what the internal bitrate of saved videos is? I wonder if the storage speed is a limit, or the processing power.

@@subethasoftware Just checked a 29:01 24.41GB set of X3 files (5760x2880 29.97fps) Bitrate of 119.88Mb/s. I got the X3 bitrate from right clicking file name - File Properties in Insta360 Studio. 24.41/29=.84 Insta360's X4 FAQ says File Size per Minute of 1.5GB. Note that real cameras bitrates start at ~400 MB/s for 4k and go to 2,600 for RAW 6k/8k.

@@subethasoftware I don't remember the video, but one of the X4 review/impression videos mentions that the likely reason for staying with 8-bit is not a bottleneck with writing to the memory card but the processing/heat. To maintain relative size/weight/power draw the technology may not yet exist. It seems likely they are using the same chipset as the Ace cameras, which likewise is limited to 8-bit. And given how hot DJI action cameras with 10-bit get with a single sensor and ONLY 4K, thermal limitations seem the likely reason.
